Graham Barton Explains His Illegal Procedure Penalty

September 22nd, 2024

Critical lesson learned.

Joe likes to say, “Rookies play like rookies because they are rookies.” Today was a perfect example of that and the lesson learned came from Graham Barton.

Thankfully, it didn’t cost the Bucs one point.

The Bucs had the ball down on the Denver-1. Second down. Bucs trailing 17-0. Barton got flagged for illegal procedure.

At least the replay on the JumboTron at The Licht House showed the ball barely moved, if at all. Fans hollered for a red flag to challenge (that would have been a booth review since it was under two minutes left in the half).

Despite getting backed up on a play that former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians would tag, “Bucs beating Bucs,” the flag didn’t cost the Bucs at all. The very next play, Baker Mayfield hit Chris Godwin for a touchdown.

“The ball was right there on the goal line,” Barton explained. “Apparently when I picked it up, I moved it forward a little bit. It was unintentional.

“I have to be aware of the situation, where the ball is at. So it is something I will correct.”

And there you have it. A rookie is learning in the NFL as all rookies do. And Barton is a rookie.

His flag didn’t cost the Bucs the game in any way.

How about the play before that when White had the ball over the endzone line. Why didn’t the booth challenge that? Just bull.

That was a touchdown all day long.

Punched in the gut by the team that wanted it more. It happens. No excuse – gut punched because we weren’t ready to fight.

We will fight back, but the guard play is a major concern. 3 games and it has been a jail break way too often. Put Klein in.

  3. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Get the Donkey back, replace Mauch with Klein, and give Bucky the damn ball! Screams, reverses, etc. Bucky is RB #1. Everyone can see that.

  4. ElioT Says:

    Don’t worry!!

GayTS, Hall, Kancey, and Brazzers will start making plays…

    Right?

  5. ElioT Says:

Maybe our all-world rookie center will help us move the needle?

Agreed that was definitely a touchdown run by White. The fact that they didn’t even review it was bs. As for the Barton penalty that was bs too, he did not do anything that I seen on the replay and I think he’s playing extremely well

  7. Hodad Says:

Mauch is as bad as Skule, both suck. Klein played RG his whole college career, he’s a true guard. Put him in coach.

Agreed Mauch is a liability. You’re only as good as your weakest link and it’s not looking good so far. We need Luke back asap and I would like to see Klein take reps over Mauch or Bredeson

  9. unbelievable Says:

I’d also like to see Klein. Or even Hainsey at guard.

Both our current guards look like complete garbage.

  10. Stanglassman Says:

If they would have called White TD instead of down at the one it would’ve happened. It wasn’t a close call he clearly made it in the endzone. That one should’ve been corrected upstairs before the next play.

  11. Crickett Baker Says:

No sense crying over one or two bad plays. If so, there were so many you could float on a raft to the Gulf.

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is the man! Defensive genius! Who else would let a USFL backup level QB slice your defense like a Christmas Ham? No one I can think of.

  13. infomeplease Says:

The way to beat Shawn Payton teams is to use more man press coverage. Just like last week, TB allowed the short stuff all day and the Broncos marched right down the field and controlled the clock, just like Detroit did. Only today the Broncos found ways to score. NO will play the same against us. They always do. And they will play man coverage and run blitz too.
On the offensive side, when the opponent rushes more players then the Bucs have blockers BM6 has to get rid of the ball faster or run for his life. Today he held the ball then ran for his life. He needs to use the safety valve guy, quick slants, or quick screen plays. Untill they quit blitzing. Play action on first and second downs more with quick releases. Until the other team quits blitzing on every down.

LG 67 it’s time to man up and earn your pay check!!! This team really needs you.

  15. infomeplease Says:

Perhaps today’s loss will piss the team off enough to never take another NFL team for granted!! Coaches included!! What adjustments are you making on offense? On defense?. Using Jumbo? More man coverage? ??????

i guess the refs pick on rookies too

  17. rrsrqnc Says:

I’m gonna need ROH to stop picking guards from programs not known for moving people off the ball. We got Marpet, that was kinda like getting Brady in round 6, it’s hard to to keep going to the well. Your best lineman came from Iowa, ND and Duke. The SEC make linemen too

  18. Heath Hunt Says:

About to make a list of SEC OL that are awful and absolutely dog walk your fake name on this site

  19. Simeon4HOF Says:

Barton had his rook errors today but he’ll get rapidly better. Guards exposed tho 4 sure. Wirfs .. tighten up. Hope Goedeke is feeling better soon

  20. Dave Pear Says:

A quadriplegic matador at RT immediately exposes the whole operation.

Todd is the head coach. And has done nothing.
