Getting To Baker Mayfield

September 18th, 2024

Elusive.

Those wheels are paying off.

Baker Mayfield has always had mobile feet. He’s no Kirk Cousins. And he’s no Kyler Murray, either.

But Mayfield can dodge pass rushers and buy time. How many times did he squirm out of a tight situation in Detroit on Sunday?

From the graphic below, it seems pass rushers are getting to Mayfield rather quickly, and Mayfield has had more than his fair share of pressure.

But the pressure isn’t affecting him.

This is why Joe is not a pressures guy. Pressures may work against lesser quarterbacks. And yes, pressures worked (a little) against Jared Goff on Sunday.

But sacks are finite. They end plays. They kill drives. They wreck gameplans.

Per DVOA — invented and developed by the former shot-caller of Football Outsiders (RIP), Aaron Schatz — Mayfield has the highest number in the NFL this year. That stat assesses a defense’s typical success in stopping a certainly type of play and how Mayfield performs in relation to that defensive average.

On the Bucs defense, YaYa Diaby seems to be beasting. But teams know he’s the lone threat and are game-planning against him. Get Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea healthy and watch Diaby go.

Back to Mayfield, it is a good thing he’s been so elusive. That certainly paid off at Detroit.

This is the man reason to incorporate more screens, slants into the offense. And more dumps to the TE. It’s coming, the reason is relatively young, we only played two games. And we’re dealing with injuries. Also the starters didn’t play much during the preseason..

  2. Casual Observer Says:

Our RT was bad. Must address that situation better if our regular one can’t get back for this Sunday.

  3. Permanently Moderated Says:

It’s great to see Baker elude the pass rush the way he does, but I think we can agree we don’t want him having to do that. Any word on who will play RT Sunday?

  4. Hodad Says:

Not buying it Joe. If everything around YaYa has to be perfect for him to shine, he isn’t the real deal. Reggie White, both Watts, the Bosa’s of the NFL don’t whine about double teams, or use missing team mates as excuses. YaYa wasn’t doubled, or chipped on everyone of Goff’s 55 drop backs. At some point it’s time for him to live up to the camp hype, his draft satus, and just produce. Have another rookie QB at home, no more excuses, sack Nix multible times . Get it done already.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Hopefully Skule’s out.

Hopefully LG67 is back at RT. This offense needs him healthy.

  7. infomeplease Says:

It will be very welcomed by BM6 and the Bucs fans when LG67 is back healthy and the line gels more so that BM6 doesn’t have to do so much escaping.

Doesn’t this graph say we have the worst pass blocking in the NFL?

  9. Trask To The Future Says:

Why can’t he complete passes over the middle? Asking for a friend.

  10. Chad Says:

Trask to the future, well if you base it off of the lions game he didn’t have time to do a lot of anything, it’s just funny you bring up throwing over the middle knowing damn well if trask was starting we would’ve lost the game. Without bakers scrambling, we lose that game 10 out of 10 times. On top of that the defense played lights out. Just wait until Luke comes back. Baker will let it fly some more

Goedeke should play Sunday, I would think. He was kept out of the Detroit game cos of a concussion, not a baseball bat to the head. Baker was scrambling for his life. He had that edge rusher disguised as a TE named Hutchinson after him. Somehow, the Bucs won with 20. They won’t face a harder opponent this season. Whew, the Lions are for real!

So far, yes. Terrible pass blocking and also awful run blocking to boot. We need Goedeke back, quickly.

  13. Not My NFL! Says:

OK yeah Schule sucked but does anyone who knows football really think Goedeke was going to do much better against Hutchinson C’MONNNN MANNN!!!!

  14. GoneGator Says:

    J. McKay would say.

We’re failing at run blocking but we’re making up for it by failing at pass protection too. 🤣🤣

  15. Lakeland Says:

The entire Offensive Line sucked against the Lions. It wasn’t just Skule….his problem was he was dealt the losing hand of taking on Hutch. I’m sure if Hutch was moved around on the line, the other linemen would’ve had the same problems…..or similar problems.

Actually Huch was moved around a lot in that game. He even took on Wirfs 2 or 3 times. Wirfs did an admiral job but almost gave up a sack because Mayfield ran into Hutch backing up too much. Hutch is for real and the Lions realized (Rightfully so) our backup RT couldn’t handle him at all. The main problem was the line didn’t have the faith in our RT and were over playing to compinsate for him. That caused them to miss the stunts and allow others to run free at times. Also Detroit did a really good job of delayed blitzes with their LB/s. This was a problem that our new center had a problem with as well. Causing the pressure up the middle. They will get that figured out hopefully this week if our RT is back. Also White was horrible with reading the defense for pass blocking which also caused a problem with protection. So much so the announcers thought it was the rookie in and mentioned how bad he was.

We couldn’t run too many screens since the Lions were looking for them and ready and our WR’s were not blocking or holding their blocks long enough. Mainly 15.

    Thanks idiaznet
