Does Baker Mayfield Play Down To His Opponents?

September 8th, 2024

Riddle solved?

Maybe this is why so many in #NFLMedia do not like Baker Mayfield.

Joe always brought this up on the “Ira Kaufman Podcast.” Joe cannot figure out why so many in the Fourth Estate truly despise Mayfield. Ira thought perhaps it’s partly because Mayfield is not afraid to snap back at reporters if he thinks he’s being asked a dumb question or is being set up.

Few groups of people get their briefs bunched up like some members of the Fourth Estate.

But Joe thinks ther’s one answer to this riddle of why so many get bitter beer face whenever Mayfield’s name is mentioned: it seems he plays down to his opponents.

BSPN had a morsel on Mayfield and gambling. And while gambling has nothing to do with the game on the field, if this trend continues this afternoon, it means today’s Bucs season opener against the Commandos might be a nail biter.

Betting nugget: Bucs QB Baker Mayfield is 13-26-1 ATS in his career as a favorite, the worst mark of any signal-caller with at least 30 starts as a favorite in the Super Bowl era.

That’s pretty damning.

The betting line of the game is Bucs -3.5. That means, for non-gamblers, if you take the Bucs to win, the Bucs must win by at least four points to win the bet (over 3.5).

If Mayfield’s trend continues today of not covering the spread, that means today’s game could be won or lost with a field goal.

So Joe has to wonder over the years how much money Mayfield has cost sportswriters? That might explain why so many in #NFLMedia just flat out don’t like the guy.

    Come out throwing, Liam.

Attack. Have BA on speed dial.

Agree with the entire sportswriters take.

Also, odds-makers on the gambling side too. Seems to be all hand-in-hand.

  3. JustVisiting Says:

That’s my biggest reservation about Mayfield: sometimes it seems like he +needs+ to be the underdog.

  4. LouisFriend Says:

You forgot to mention all the reports of Mayfield being a more mature person entering this season.

So today he’s either the new, grown up, solid QB people have been talking about – or the kid you’re referencing here who entered the NFL trying to piss everyone off.

    It’s Mayfield vs the world…

Individual QB #’s ATS don’t mean jack squat, as FB is a team sport.
Mayfield’s performance/stats are tied the rest of his offensive team mates performance. That ATS record is also tied to the DEF & ST play.

I’m sick & tired of hearing all the 4th Estate blowhards clamoring on about QB stats. They don’t block for themselves & RARELY catch their own passes. (QB Tip Catches do happen from time to time…But you get my point…It’s team sport.)

Baker’s TEAMS are 13-26-1 ATS… But those stats weren’t accumulated by himself or with this years team…This 2024 Bucs get to start writing their own story (today) in about 2hrs.

catcard – good points but remember it’s the late afternoon game – don’t want you damaging your eyeballs watching some scrub teams. About 4 more hours, mate.

  7. Shane Callahan Says:

    Silly.

Carolina is just a terrible organization. I’m so glad Canales left, but I knew he would fail there even worse than Baker. Baker wasn’t the problem, Rhule wasn’t the problem, and cheerleader Canales isn’t the answer.

  8. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Football might be a team sport but the qb touches the ball more than any play maker on the offense so when you watch him play his team goes as he plays. He is just as much to blame for the losses as the rest of the team. He is consistently inconsistent from game to game. Not as good as fanbois think he is or as bad as his detractors think, the perfect definition of muffle of the pack because you never know what you’re going to get from him. Last year he couldn’t get the ball into the end zone on the 1st drive of the game. The blame falls on his shoulders as much as anybody.

    Middle of the pack

BUT he thrives in playoffs & he got us to the playoffs u didn’t get us anything but u r stupid posts so shut TFU

Ha ha ha….looks like clueless Baker haters were and are wrong again. How’d he do without Canales?
