Dan Quinn Vs. Todd Bowles On Opening Days

September 4th, 2024

Some coaches know how to prepare a team for the unknown of opening day. Some don’t.

That brings Joe to Sunday. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has been head coach for six opening days between his time leading the Jets and Tampa Bay. Washington head coach Dan Quinn, who the Bucs will face Sunday, also has six opening days under his belt. All came with the Falcons.

So what are the records?

Quinn is 2-4 on opening days despite coaching with a true franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan.

Bowles? He’s 4-2 on opening days with a combination of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh McCown, Sam Darnold, Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield starting at quarterback.

Of course, the Bucs had a thrilling win last season on opening day in Minnesota against Kirk Cousins, the QB many have annointed MVP for the 2024 season with Atlanta.

Whatever you think of Bowles, he knows how to prepare a club for Week 1.

    IT’S EXCITING!!!

  2. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Very little faith in Dan Quinn. He certainty knows how to blow a massive lead in a superbowl.

#1 way to win on Sunday – out physical WFT. Dominate the lines, the rest will fall in place. Same for every game.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Early look at the weather on Sunday … have about a 50% chance of rain at 4p, going up to a 75% chance of rain at 5p and it stays at around 75% through 7p.

Also, if they do get rain, that almost certainly means at least one stoppage because of lightning.

So it could be one of those classic cluster f games where they keep stopping and starting, which would ruin on of Tampa’s biggest advantages, and that is the heat, since the Redskins will get a chance to rest.

Still betting that Tampa wins, but if the weather forecast is correct, that will make it much more of a toss up I think, since once you have wet balls slipping through the players hands, anything can happen.

  4. Tye Says:

Hopefully Bowels doesn’t get out coached yet again and blow this game for the Bucs!

They gonna be Ashington when they leave Tampa. We’re keeping the W.

I get the feeling that the accrued experiences of Todd Bowles as a head coach has added up to a level of self confidence that could benefit him well. He’s a survivor. He has been dealt some bad hands. He didn’t wilt. He kept his chin up and plodded along. He kept rowing the boat. He was deluged with criticism (some from yours truly). His high character has never been questioned.

Perhaps he now has the necessary ingredients to cook up a magical brew.

Here’s wishing you much success Coach ! Go Bucs !

  7. Citrus County Says:

I forgot to add; Go earn a ring you can call “all your own”.

I actually feel like Bowles is better the more time he has to prepare for a team. He is pretty good week 1 because he has weeks to prepare. Same thing with the Super Bowl dude had 2 weeks to prepare for the Chiefs and his defense literally shut them down.

    @Sly Pirate – Nice

@ Rod Munch – how accurate are these Tampa forecasts 5 days out. Where I am from, forecasts more than 2 days out are a dart throw. Anyway, hope you are wrong about the weather.

  10. Lakeland Says:

We can say a lot of things about Todd Bowles. But it’s a fact, Bowles and his staff have developed more young players than any other staff since Licht been GM. This include both sides of the ball. Take a look at the Bucs roster, and you see young developed talent as far as the eye can see.

    Tampa wins!

@Rod I certainly take your point.

@ Sask I would normally take yours as well but it’s Florida. Saying there will be afternoon thundershowers is par for the course. If you check out the Weather Channel’s extended forecast tomorrow is the last day in ten for less than 50% chance of rain with the remaining days having virtually identical forecasts.

It’s the same forecast you’ll be able to count on next fall.

Tstorms and rain in the mid 50% range except for Monday’s 80% chance.

I used to whine about this late summer early fall feature until I went through the first drought. Last year for example sucked. We NEED rain.

As for how it affects the game I agree with Rod. It’s more advantageous for the Commanders than the Bucs but it would provide a chance to see if the Bucs have truly improved their run game.

I’ll say this, when the NFL schedule was release in May – I said the following in the comments…

“Week 1 – Sept 8, 4:25p ET start time. Might as well show up at 7p, because that game is getting delayed. You can’t play a game if there’s lightning within 10 miles, you know, because of the thousands of people that have been stuck and killed in the stands at NFL games. But, for fans, it should make it dramatically more bearable.”

From late June until the middle of September, you get thunderstorms nearly every day. It’s about as predictable as it gets when it comes to weather.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucfan – I’m looking at the forecast for the stadium itself, not just the area in general, and the rain odds shoot up to 75% at 4p for the stadium. But those automated pinpoint forecasts are hit and miss, so 50% is probably a more likely number for any given location. However that 10-mile lightning rule means even if it doesn’t rain at the stadium, it’s still likely to get delayed.

Good thing, as you know, the stadium has excellent drainage, so even if they get some passing thunderstorms, it shouldn’t turn into a mess – at least since USF isn’t playing there the day before.

Damn! I was hoping for sunny, hot and humid.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

When I first moved here in 1979 it rained hard for about 20 minutes almost every day at about 4:00; at least in Orlando. Well, that’s how I remember it.
That was 45 years ago so who knows if I remember it right.

  18. orlbucfan Says:

It’s not if it rains, it’s the intensity of these storms. The intensity has increased. We have been getting deluged several times a week here in ECFL. Had a whopper last night. So it’ll rain in Tampa this weekend. Bucs practice outside in the FL sauna. Only time they’re called in is monsoon conditions with dangerous lightning strikes. Both Bucs and DC play in outdoor stadiums. Hope Coen shows his imagination. Go Bucs!
