Chris Godwin: Bucs Offense Has Chance To Be “Dominant”

September 9th, 2024

New offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

If this is the output the Bucs offense can have despite not scoring a touchdown on the first drive, Joe will take Sunday’s results any day.

The Bucs went the entire season last year not scoring a touchdown on their first possession on a game’s opening possesson. They were 0-17 (0-19 if you include the two playoff games).

Yesterday, the streak continued. However, the Bucs scored on their first five possessions. Five!

Not a bad debut for Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen. Chris Godwin was asked about the offense under Coen after the game.

In Godwin’s eyes, Coen and the Bucs have an an offense that could become “dominant.”

“I think that we have to the potential to be a really really dominant offense, but it doesn’t mean anything if we do not go out there and put it on the field,” Godwin said. “It was one game, and we are really happy with how many points that we scored but again there were three possessions where we felt like we should have gotten touchdowns and I think if we are just so focused on the number, I think we are looking at the wrong thing.”

So what will it take for the Bucs to become dominant?

“I think if we are trying to focus on execution then when things get tough, when things start to get sticky and we are able to execute in tough moments, I think that will be the determining factor in how successful of an offense we are,” Godwin said.

Now think about this: In just their very first NFL games, Bucky Irving ran for 6.9 yards a carry. Jalen McMillan caught a touchdown — he may have had two had he not hesitated for some odd reason coming out of his break in the first half. He was behind the Washington defense when Mayfield’s pass bounced off his hands.

Maybe if Irving gets more touches and McMillan continues to improve, the offense could be scary good. So Joe doesn’t think Godwin is nuts for suggesting this.

Offense looks ready for a little Lion revenge, let’s go Bucs!

MadMax I agree with you 100%; Coen called an excellent game. He did a great job I thought of intermixing the run & the pass, and kept the Commanders’ defense off-balance. Bucs had 9 plays in the 1st half that went for 10 yards of greater (all passes), and had 7 more in the 2nd half (4 runs & 3 passes). So 16 of our 60 plays (30 runs & 30 passes) went for 10 yards or more … THAT’S IMPRESSIVE IMO.

I have to admit, I was angry as a hornets nest when McMillan let that ball bounce off his hands. Ya gotta catch those opportunities. But overall…all is forgiven.

If this is a breadcrumb of what we are going to see this season, we are going to the Super Bowl. I watched tidbits of other games yesterday, and are offense looked explosive along with rookies. Other teams did not, including the Panthers, Browns, and Falcons. Yes, McMillan had a rookie mistake, and he learned quickly from it. He is under the wings of Evans and Godwin, and will be the future too.

I loved all the movement at the line. It makes it tougher to guard you. We have been so predictable with literally no pre snap motion on BYYYRON and Canales. Was really funny to watch that offense hum yesterday.

Come on defense … get healthy!

I am flying high this Monday morning!

This game was a warm up for our game at Detroit next Sunday.

    Go Bucs!!

It was a very satisfying win against an over hyped and underperforming media hyped paper tiger. I see Atanta as a deflated balloon that will struggle to beat solid opponents. And I don’t think an exciting rookie running qb who is very slight of build will carry a Atlanta to the playoffs. He will be lucky to survive deep into the season if he is constantly running for his life. Exciting youg player? Yes. Sustainable pro game running qb? A disaster waiting to happen.

I wrote a similar feeling in an earlier comment. If Ungodly CG14 is saying it, wowsers! Okay, on to Detroit. Go Bucs!!
