Chris Godwin Among The League’s Best

September 16th, 2024

Back to his old self.

If you walk into a bar and say Chris Godwin is a top-five receiver, here is some intel that will back you up.

Since Bucco Bruce Arians came to Tampa Bay in 2019 and moved Godwin to slot, he is one of the most productive receivers in the game.

Godwin now has 50 games since 2019 in which had at least five catches and 50 yards receiving. Only three other players have more: stars Davante Adams (54), Stefon Diggs (52) and Travis Kelce (51).

Yesterday in the first half, Godwin had 117 yards receiving. Detroit took him out of the game in the second half. On Godwin not having any receiving yards in the second half, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said, “We didn’t have a lot of time to throw.”

But damn if Godwin wasn’t his old productive, dependable self in the first half. He looked just like the Chris Godwin before he blew out his knee late in the 2021 sdason

Joe wonders how much having the slimy Saints blow up his knee and Dave Canales pulling him out of the slot full-time cost Godwin, statistics-wise.

Joe very much doubts Godwin will ever make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But it may be time to start thinking about when he goes into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor as the second best receiver in franchise history.

I wanted Godwin in the slot we drafted Justin Evans and was surprised and delighted when he lasted to the 3rd round and we got him there. He’s a stud and definitely the 2nd best WR in franchise history.

  2. SenileSenior Says:

The offense went through Godwin as a game plan I believe. Coen did well. The defense was stellar.

    Go Bucs!

  3. Cometowin2 Says:

He def will make the Ring of Honor. One of my favorite Bucs all time. Fan since 1977.

Godwin: I’m following Mike’s lead and ball out for a new contract. (Pay the man!)

  5. BucU Says:

We’re lucky to have Chris. True professional on and off the field.

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

I still think he is the first player in NFL history to have 100 yards in a game before any other teammate had a single reception.

That fake screen that CG14 scored the TD on was brilliant!!

Great win, feel good Monday victory day but man oh man, someone needs to be held accountable for putting that right tackle out there one on one with Hutchinson and allowing a $30,000,000 quarterback to be sacked 3 times in a quarter.

Next week the Bucs better have another tackle ready to go if Goedke isn’t and have a different backup. That was a major personel mistake using scrub to try and block one of the most athletic pass rushers in the league.

The Bucs could have lost Baker Mayfield yesterday to injury due to the stupidity of whoever thinks Skul can play in the NFL.

Got that right infomeplease! Beautiful design, executed well. Gotta love watching Godwin and the Bucs right now.

    Career Year for #14

  12. David Kilmer Says:

I loved the one stat that came from the game, you may have missed. Godwin 5 , receptions 116 yards, the rest of the team 0. It has been a joy to watch him play with the Bucs. I am amazed how poorly he was used or misused last year, yet, it took his wife to say something before anyone listened. I guess sometimes coaches don’t see the forrest for the trees. The team is fortunate to have him, nobody moves the chains better. Him and Evans together deliver quite the 1,2 punch. I don’t seee how they don’t bring him back next year and that will show even more as the year goes on.
I think the best thing that happened for the Bucs was Canalas was offered a head coaching job by Carolina.

Ungodly….been that way since CG14 came here as a rookie. Enough said.

  14. WiseCrack Says:

    @orlbucfan

Your nickname for Chris is weak and dumb. Stop and pause before you say or read what you just said. Take a deep breath and think of what being great and awesome mean and think of who #14 is. Just stop with that dumbness, for the love of the only one true football gods.

Tell us you are not dumb……

  15. HC Grover Says:

He benefited from Evans as a Decoy.

  16. heyjude Says:

Godwin had a great game and is one of the best! Evans was double covered most of the day and did what he could. Agree with HC, both were out there and the Lions couldn’t be everywhere. Great coaching and teamwork, Bucs win.

  17. PSL Bob Says:

Infomeplease, agree. Beautifully designed play. Bake was money and Chris did the rest.

  18. Day1BucFan Says:

Chris has played so well that it might jeopardize ME’s streak!

  19. orlbucfan Says:

wisecrack, what exactly is your problem? “Ungodly” is a compliment. Go get a dictionary and look it up. Leave your dumbo insults at home. You embarrass yourself.
