Chris Braswell Position Coach Updates His Progress

September 25th, 2024

Rookie edge rusher Chris Braswell, the second-round pick.

So what does the Bucs staff think of Chris Braswell’s performance through his first three games?

Lots of fans wish that was an easy answer, as in Braswell racking up sacks and beasting against the run with big hits.

That’s not been the case, and it’s understandable. It’s the norm for rookie edge rushers. Even former rookie stars like Maxx Crosby didn’t explode until midway through their opening season.

Bucs outside linebackers coach George Edwards said yesterday that it’s been a “pretty good” transition for Braswell, the Bucs’ second round pick, who has played just 66 defensive snaps.

“Now I think from a technique standpoint and a fundamental standpoint it’s been a lot of new things that he’s had to add to his toolbox, and from a rush standpoint,” Edwards told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “But I think he’s grasped it pretty good and I think guys have rallied around him that know that we need him, you know, to bring him along pretty quick. And I think he’s grasped it. I thought he actually rushed the best that he’s rushed [against Denver]. He had a couple of hits on the quarterback. … I think it’s coming. I think he’ll continue to improve as we continue down this journey and look forward to get there fast.”

Edwards added that Braswell has a very mature approach and he doesn’t get too high or low. He’s found a level of consistency, Edwards said, and Braswell is a very eager learner with teammates.

Edwards also emphasized that Braswell didn’t come to the Bucs very raw.

“I thought his power and explosion in the run game really showed up [in college]. I mean, he did quite a bit at the University of Alabama in Nick [Saban’s] system defensively, so he’s dropped [in coverage], he’s rushed, he was able to play the run a certain way that we expect.”

Joe wants to see more Braswell. That’s the only way he’ll improve.

As anyone paying attention knows, the Bucs’ edge rush has been very sad this season. If Braswell can’t get more snaps soon with this group, then Joe will be suspicious.

I think Edward’s sucks at his job.

  2. Bucsny Says:

He’s way to small, gets rag dolled most of the time

  3. Hodad Says:

JTS is a bust, YaYa is on his way, next season I hope I’m not saying the same thing about Braswell. Maybe it’s time for Licht to go the FA, or trade for a real edge rusher. So far he’s not striking gold in the draft. Our two best edge guys under Licht were not drafted. JPP we traded for, Shaq was a FA. Might want to do the same for a quality guard. Since Marpet, who took time to adjust, didn’t make a probowl till he retired, Licht has struck out fiding a good LG, RG. I’ve seen enough of Mauch to say he’s not an NFL guard. Might make a decent swing tackle, but that could also be asking to much.

  4. Cobraboy Says:

    Meh

  5. BucU Says:

Mauch and Bredeson ain’t gettin it done. Geodeke had better get back for this next game. He’s needed desperately to slow down the assaults on BM.

  6. 1#bucsfan Says:

Hodad marpet didn’t need time to adjust. He played 3 diff positions on the oline the only one he wasn’t great at was C other than that dude was legit and the pro bowl is a joke that doesn’t mean if your good or not just that your popular.

  7. Lol Says:

Why not trade for Shaq Barrett? send a 7th to the Dolphins. He may be washed, but I think he would have been better than anyone else we have on the roster last Sunday.

It was pretty obvious the Bucs lacked quality depth at the position and were VERY YOUNG there. Only the biggest Homers thought they were in a good position. I even heard some Homers saying that OLB was the Bucs deepest position. HAHAHA, what a load of crap.

I hope Braswell comes along well, but to rely on a rookie and a bunch of young players who havent showed they can be the guy is biting the Bucs in the A$$.
    LOL

  8. Obvious Says:

    LOL,

Besides the trade for Shaq, (I’d have to think on that a bit), besides that, I couldn’t agree more……

  9. Lakeland Says:

Chris Braswell had 2 QB hits in 23 snaps, and l don’t know how many of those snaps were on passing down. He can’t produce sitting on the bench.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs are relying on rookies because some of their veterans are pathetic. Bad position to be in.

  11. Kgh4life Says:

It seems this defensive staff does not prioritize their OLBs actually rushing the passer. They constantly talk about OLBs playing the run and dropping into coverage. Now we see the results.

  12. BillyBucco Says:

I agree this defensive staff talking about one of the beat qualities of an OLB being dropping in coverage is HORSE CRAP.
Do we EVER see picks or defensed passes from OLB. We have actually been horrible batting down balls under Bowles. If you don’t get pressure it doesn’t matter how many guys you drop in coverage.
I wish Casey had asked the hard questions.
Like you are on pace for 11 sacks.
Why do you keep saying, well they are getting better.
When does the staff take ownership and go get guys who are better.

    ^^^^^^

In school, when every kid fails and exam, it’s on the teacher. Right now every OLB is failing.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Translation is he was drafted to high

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

We’ve given up 62 points this year. We’ve scored 64 points. We drafted Barton, McMillan, Irving -Come on now Baker and Liam!! Get the ball to the new guys. That’s why you drafted them. Barton has nothing but upside. Unless and until this offense gets rolling there is gonna be alot of hand-wringing going on.

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

I know this article was about Braswell but I’m not too concerned about the defense giving up 20 points per game. I am really concerned about an offense scoring 20 points per game.

  17. Hodad Says:

Agree with 4life, dropping our OLBs into coverage is a waste of time. Just let them pin their ears back and go after the QB. I’m tired of watching QBs having all the time in the world, and JTS, or YaYa are lost in coverage. Our best defense was the 4-3. Everyone knew their jobs, this defense looks dazed, and confused all to often.

Rashad white, and a 3rd round picks for Hassan Reddick.

  19. Just a guy Says:

Just my opinion, but this kind of article shouldn’t be written until post game 8 for a rookie. Understand that Joe(s) need to put articles out every day but this kind of stuff is borderline Cleveland level cancerous.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

“Whelp, just like most of Todd’s defensive linemen, he’s underachieving. Of course we did drop him into coverage all of training camp and preseason, because we didn’t want him to hone his pass rushing skills against NFL caliber talent. But the plan is to let him go learn how to play his position from another coach, then sign him back, like Jordan Whitehead. “

  21. Buc2Blame Says:

I don’t think he’s gonna pan out in the nfl 🤷🏾‍♂️ but who knows I just know it won’t be with this don’t know how to develop pass rusher organization

  22. Badbucs Says:

@Elio T has it figured out. When does Edward’s plan on teaching the OLB group the guy on the outside is responsible for contain. No one gets around you on the outside. How many times are they going to get caught inside or too far upfield and the QB just goes right by them while they watch. They’re particularly inept on third down and long down and distance plays.
