Offense “Left A Lot Of Meat Out There”
September 9th, 2024High standards at One Buc Palace.
The Bucs scored on their first five possessions yesterday and racked up 37 points without the benefit of a forced turnover. Joe hadn’t seen a home-game output like that in a long time.
Still, head coach Todd Bowles wasn’t giving his new playcaller Liam Coen a standing ovation. Bowles was more measured in his praise during his Monday sitdown with WFLA-TV sports chief Dan Lucas.
“He did a very good job, but as all coordinators, he left a lot of meat out there on that bone,” Bowles said of Coen. “There’s more to do. And we can score more points and we can get better.”
Of course, Bowles, like most coaches, loves to nitpik and hyper-analyze. That’s a reason he works ridiculous hours. There’s always more success to be had — unless you keep Patrick Mahomes out of the end zone in a Super Bowl.
Coen is a details guy, too, and the reality is the Bucs did leave points on the board yesterday. A Jalen McMillan drop hurt as did some other plays and presnap penalties, but Joe gives Coen an “A” grade for his Tampa Bay debut.

Mac cutting off his route early and Bake not running the ball on 3rd down instead choosing to throw it high over Evans out of the EndZone is the 12 points we left off the board offensively. Good thing Money showed up.

Wagner had the angle on that third down, he would have been slammed to the ground by a linebacker for no good reason, and there’s at least 16 more games
September 9th, 2024 at 8:11 pm
Yeah I agree with Beeej. When it happened I was upset Baker didn’t run, but then saw the replay and most likely Wagner would have crushed him.
Might have been able pick up a couple yards and slide, but he wasn’t getting in.
September 9th, 2024 at 8:18 pm
The two misses to J-Mac and on a 3rd down scramble where Mayfield was tackled by Wagner he missed a wide open Cade Otton down the right sideline.
37 points is still 37 points. I see 24 next week.

Maybe left some meat but took a pretty nice chunk.

When Todd says, “we can score more points and we can get better.” I get a very nice case of the warms.

Love that he said we can score more points. After him dismantling Arians offense for the reason of his guys are tired by end of season left a bad taste in my mouth and not really liking Bowles as a head coach. Maybe he’s adapting. I know he’s old school with the philosophy of pound the rock and play fundamental solid defense. So hearing him say we can score more points is music to my ears. I loved watching koetters offense he had a top 5 in passing and then Arians after him which say us have one of the better offenses in the league. Let’s goo. It’ll be bitter sweet if our offense keeps this up. Coen will be a head coach next season

Not for sure what some of you guys want. First it is Baker takes too many chances, he is going to get hurt and other times Baker should throw it away
My thoughts are he is a playmaker and I will live with his decisions. Now if any of you can do better I am sure Licht would like to talk to you
September 9th, 2024 at 8:51 pm
You’re not going to hit every play. Bucs offense executed pretty well. Nearly mistake free.

Aaron Rogers looks like an old man playing football.
September 9th, 2024 at 9:09 pm
Rodgers on the TD drive looked good to me.
September 9th, 2024 at 9:24 pm
@ Trask Fan, he does look ancient for football now.
He’s making ‘business decisions’ and chucking the ball away pretty fast tonight. That’s a guy who doesn’t want to get hurt more than anything else he’s doing.

The Bucs kicked two short FG that should have been TDs, so Bowles is right about leaving points.
Of course you could also point out how Bowles going to a prevent with, what, 9 minutes left in the game, made the game look a lot closer than it really was.
Overall, the first week was great, but there’s always stuff to improve – and saying that isn’t knocking the team.

AR has same stats (at halftime) as Purdy, but SF has 10x the running game
September 9th, 2024 at 9:47 pm
From an offensive perspective I’d say we had a drop cost us 4 points and a wr hold down field that cost us some points. But we could talk about the defense inability to get off the field cost us a possession or 2?

my play of the day was when they called lllegal man downfield against barton, and the refs were challenged.
the tape showed barton was right.
it showed our coaches trusted him and were correct to do so.
nothing like standing up to a challenge and winning for your confidence.
of secondary importance was that the play went for twenty plus yards at a crucial time in the game.
this is one we will remember imo

I think Bowles’ Prevent Defense has to be the worst ‘Prevent Defense’ in NFL HISTORY.
The only thing it usually prevents is the Bucs from winning.
We should go full regular defensive scheme the whole game.

This was the “perfect” game for opening day! No it wasn’t a “perfect” game but that’s just it. The Bucs clearly scored an A for their first outing. The ONLY negative currently is the health of the defense.
Meanwhile the offense did EXACTLY what Bowles envisioned. Let’s start with a critical underreported stat. Time of possession!
The Bucs had the ball for 33:41 / The DC’s 26:19 That kept Daniels off the field for seven extra minutes EXACTLY what Bowles wants the O to accomplish for his D. Add in the HOT MUGGY weathere and the DC’s were wilting. The Bucs were able to put in Bucky’s fresh legs and BOOM 62 yards on the ground ripping the soul out of the DC’s defense.
It couldn’t have gone better if Bowles and Licht had scripted it!!! ME13 shows his MAGIC connection with Baker on that TD, CG14’s extra effort and another TD and the new kid in town catches a TD after dropping the same pass in the first half. And on BOTH of those plays the new kid was wide freaking open because the OC schemed him open.
5 targets on virtually every play, who is the DC gonna cover?

Rogers wants to do what the GOAT did.

Hey Dave Pear! Reading Mr . Rod Munch s post – may be giving me a very nice case of the warms. And I’m not even about to know what that is. Something’s up though. He was sounding so polite and all… he’s probably planning right now how to blow up all of our naivety. No matter. Nobody’s stealing my faith in humanity.
September 9th, 2024 at 10:52 pm
Kenton – LOL, right on.
Rod is entertaining, and interesting – if someone tries to be agreeable with him he tends to find some contrary nuance to elevate. All in the good fun of JBF.

Liam is a big upgrade over Canales

Gotta get the D healthy (sucks bout Bryce) and this team is what us optimists thought it was. A damn good football club and tough out for any other team in the NFL. No Kancey, McCollum, Winfield though and we are 3/4 of a good football club.

My grandpa used to say: “Boy, if your not striving for unattainable perfection…How will you every find excellence??? You just can’t get to excellence by settling for okay.”
That is everything in life, in a nutshell.

Ahh, the euphoria of an opening week win!
I’m loving it too.
But let’s not get too carried away. After all, it was Washington.
We still have some issues that the good teams are gonna focus on.
Cody Mauch looked horrible. Bredeson was bad
Wirfs had an off game. Hopefully he pulls it together.
Our TEs still make more penalties than plays.
Kancey can stay healthy.
Our pass Russ is weak.
SirVoncea Dennis needs to stay healthy. He’s a force.
Every team has issues. First 3 games, the teams are figuring out who they are.
After that- they start focusing on who you are.
We’ve got lots to be happy about.
Let’s see if we can get a little revenge in Detroit!
September 10th, 2024 at 2:32 am
Settled for FGs early as usual. Add some penalties and yeah it can get better.
Two IP penalties in a row? That reminded me of the Bucs in the early years. Coen has some work to do there. Otten was awful. Durham can block.
Go Bucs!
September 10th, 2024 at 7:33 am
could have scored three more touchdowns, I’m all for it
September 10th, 2024 at 8:50 am
Offense scored 24 points and won TOP. Special Teams scored 13 points. Now, repeat the formula in Motown. No Defensive turnovers though. No Offensive turnovers, neither. Make be a Cardiac game with the Defensive injuries, but it will be a Win. I’ll take it. Go Bucs!!
September 10th, 2024 at 9:09 am
37 Points
They can strive for perfection. That’s their job. 37 points is a big number. The Bucs would have been 16-1 last year.
September 10th, 2024 at 9:12 am
Right on, Sly.
Offense must lead this team. Especially with the injury-decimated defense.
