Bucs Intentionally Laying Low

September 14th, 2024

“I’m playin’ it cool, Mike.”

Joe waited for Saturday on this.

Just in case.

So Joe can promise fans that Baker Mayfield fielded a healthy share of interview requests after throwing 4 touchdown passes in Week 1 (11.4 percent of the league total), especially with former media-darling Atlanta getting embarrassed.

Joe is somewhat confident other Bucs were the target of national shows, too, and not just players.

Joe was glad to see the Bucs collectively laying low. Not one radio interview unaffiliated with official Bucs media could Joe find, and Joe is confident that was no coincidence.

Last season, the Bucs got a little too full of themselves after going 3-1. They were feelin’ it publicly and privately without being ready for that kind of attitude as a team still coming together.

This week, Joe believes, Todd Bowles put the word out to lay low for at least a week.

Obviously, tomorrow is a huge game at Detroit and the Bucs didn’t need to be stroking themselves publicly before that premier matchup.

If the Bucs beat Detroit, Joe expects Tampa Bay to be placed quickly into the national spotlight as a true Super Bowl contender. Plenty of time to flex at that point.

Peter Shrager apologized for picking the Falcons to win the Dirty Dirty. 🤣🤣🤣

  2. WiseCrack Says:

Only catch to this conclusion is, BUT THE LIONS PLAYED A BAD GAME. ie NFCWC vs the Eagles just last year.

They beat themselves; Bucs didn’t beat them. Hints why ATL is the darling of the folks who don’t watch football. And why the LIONS are equal darlings of the wishful thinking crowd.

  3. Fred McNeil Says:

A win at Detroit would sure feel great. Admittedly, though, it would be a big surprise.

  4. Fred McNeil Says:

Wisecrack, I would just love to see the Lions have a lousy game. Most NFL games I’m hoping for a great game. Where the BUCS are involved I prefer a runaway in the BUCS favor. They could be again 50 points and I would still be watching to see if they can make it 60.

  5. Fred McNeil Says:

They did play overtime. Maybe that will drain them a bit. 🤞

  6. Joe Says:

Yup. Joe ran the video earlier this week.

  7. KABucs Says:

I’m with Fred except our Bucs seem to love the nail biters. Not a single boring moment last year… it’ll probably be the same this year. Just hope we have a few more blowouts in our favor.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Flexing a week 2 win is weak sauce. It’s still too early. From a season perspective it doesn’t matter as much as a week 12 or later win. Bucs need to go undefeated in November and December. That’s the time of the year we fans will find out what kind of team the Bucs are this season.

  9. Beeej Says:

Saw some guy on NFL predict caroLINA to win the South

  10. Defense Rules Says:

A Bucs Fan … Every win counts just as much as every other win, and every loss counts just as much as every other loss. I do agree though that it’s awfully nice to go into the playoffs hot.

  11. Buddha Says:

    This week in NFL:
    Last week’s results: 2-3

This week: New York Giants + 1.5

    Lean: Green Bay +3

Ordinarily would love Tampa +7.5, but the injuries scare me.

  12. heyjude Says:

This is a good thing laying low before tomorrow.

Agree with WiseCrack – Hoping the Lions have a real bad game.

  13. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

If the Bucs were healthy I’d be much more confident going into tomorrow’s game. It’s possible we can still win but we might need to score 45 points and win in a shootout.

To hold the Lions under 30 points we’ll have to dominate time of possession and/or win the turnover battle.

    My prediction: Bucs win! 37-34.

    Any given Sunday, playyyya

  15. Mike S Says:

Buddha I would stay miles away from the gmen. That’s a bad football team. Daniel Jones is shattered mentally and the NY media and fan base have torches and pitchforks out.

NYG oline is atrocious they gave up 20 pressures and 5 sacks against Jones in week 1. Pat Jones got 2 in the game and now his 4 year career total is 7. Who TF is Pat Jones? LOL.

The only position player name they have is Singletary and he’s a clown. The defense can’t get pressure and Aaron Jones ran all over them.

They got throttled by a very mediocre Vikings team.

It’s not like this is a new thing. The Giants are 60-102-1 over the last 10 years. That’s averaging double digit losses per year now for a decade. It’s a poorly run franchise. The owner tells the GM – I don’t want to see Saquon going to Philly – and that’s exactly what happens. How do you reconcile that? What happened was they punted on redoing a deal and that’s a signal flare for capitulation. They will have 50 mil in cap space next season and that’s before they cut players. They goting to take it in the chops this year and then draft a QB in 2025. This year is a wash already at week 2.

U/O on the NYG is 6.5. Take the under all day long. Bet your house on it.

  16. Mike S Says:

It won’t be the end of the world if the Bucs lose in Detroit. They have Denver at home after that which they should handle. They stay 2-1 they’ll be on course.

  17. Dom Says:

Bucs can end up being the number 1 seed in the NFC if they win this game. Being in a weak NFC South is really going to help

  18. Lakeland Says:

I don’t know why people are so afraid of Jared Golf. He’s not a great QB, he throws too many pics. The Bucs dropped two pics last season in their playoff game. He misses too many open receivers. There’s a reason why the Rams traded him for Matthew Stafford!!

  19. Dave Pear Says:

    Laying low is good.

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

Yeah, I was just thinking about the great players we still have left healthy—ME, CG, LVD, Diaby, Otton, Wirfs, Palmer, and more. We still have a good chance of winning! GO BUCS!

  21. NC Lifelong Bucs Fan Says:

Nice article, but a bit of a reach. So the logic here is that when players do interviews they don’t practice or play as hard because they feel already accomplished? I’m a former athlete and this is kinda ridiculous. But again, nice read.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

I’m SHOCKED Radio laid an egg in his Atlanta debut.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

“Speak softly and carry a Big Stick.”

    I endorse ^^^this^^^ philosophy…

  24. Rod Munch Says:

The team isn’t like the annoying morons in the comment section who, after a week 1 win, are ‘dunking’ on anyone who didn’t pick the Bucs to win the Super Bowl.

Although, in fairness, 95% of the idiots aren’t Bucs fans, they’re just Baker Boi(s) who couldn’t name a single Buccaneer in the HOF.

  25. WiseCrack Says:

    Rod Munch

You know, I know, Everyone knows, Baker is a sure Fire Hall of Flamer.

    Get with the program Rod

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs mess around and Shock Detroit, I wonder what the national sports shows will say then? It can happen.

  27. FortMyersDave Says:

Lakeland, for whatever reason, Goff has Bowles’ number. He puts up big numbers against Bowles’ soft zone and whatever exotics he comes up with. Last time Goff lost to a Bowles D, in LA when the Bucs won 55-40 under Winston back in 2019, Bowles first year as DC. Now the stat geeks would claim that he is due for a bad game if they were not riding Detroit’s jock so lets hope the Bucs either win a shootout or Goff has a real bad day. Go Bucs!

  28. Chris Says:

Is it safe to say Dave Canales benefited from our Offensive Weapons ? BUCS are SOLID!!!!!

  29. Kenton Smith Says:

Wisecrack I’m with you. Any moron knows that after that Washington game last week that Baker had cinched his spot in the Hall. Get with the program Rod!

  30. Kenton Smith Says:

Oh yeah. I’m still picking the Bucs tomorrow. Because I hate hearing this crap how it’ll be more important to finish strong. Of course you want to finish on a roll. But I promise these guys are going to try like hell every single game – to win.

  31. Paratrooper Buc Says:

I said before that if we were healthy then it’s a 50/50 chance but a lean to lions for homefield. With the injuries to Zyon, Winfield, Kancey and Goedeke then we are at 25% chance. Zyon makes it 29% now. I would count Winfield, Kancey and Goedeke as 7% each in helping our chances. I hope we win but I see why it will be hard to win.
