Bucs’ Cash Spoke Loudly Against Commanders

September 9th, 2024

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Simple but astute point by former Buccaneers defensive back (2022) Logan Ryan today.

Reviewing the Bucs-Commanders game on SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning, Ryan noted that every big Tampa Bay free agent signing of this past offseason played well Sunday.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht passed out fat contracts to Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, Chase McLaughlin, Lavonte David and Antoine Winfield, Jr., and Ryan thinks their Week 1 success is significant.

Perhaps it illustrates not only smart decisions by Licht — and Team Glazer to make the cash available — but it speaks to the team culture and stability Licht raves about and the difference it can make.

Joe has a feeling the same thing isn’t being said in Atlanta.

Overall, Ryan was impressed by the Bucs’ output of 37 points — without the defense forcing a turnover. He believes the Bucs’ biggest question mark is running the football, “If a team takes away their passing game, can they actually run the ball.”

Running wide rather than ‘up the gut’ sure helped get the running game started. Also welcome sight to see throwing on 1st down occasionally.

Yep….amazing the Bucs put 37 points on the board without any turnovers. If the defense can get healthy, this team will go deep into the post season.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … Before I forget BTW, you’re on fire today. Kudos!

  4. Jerseybuc Says:

Hate that the D is already digging super deep on depth

  5. Austin Says:

SVD will take over at linebacker, Kancey will come back, and our corners will get healthy. All 3 levels of our defense should get way better

  6. Austin Says:

But the defense still played good team ball

I would absolutely die if I had to wear long sleeves and a suit coat in that 110 degree sauna yesterday.

I swear I’d be the first GM to wear a polo and shorts to a game.

By no means did he play poorly. BUT, missing from this list of newly paid players who played well is the big man 78. Wirfs might have had one of his worst games as a pro. Not really worried about him but he looked human for the first time. Got blown up at least once and committed a penalty or two.

    Licht is a genius

  10. BakerFan Says:

MIke Evans and Baker Mayfield made all these signings possible. They did not demand breaking the bank on either signing and that set up the Bucs to make good on all the rest of them. Now if Godwin follows suite this team will rock the next couple of years.

  11. Pewter Power Says:

We definitely have to have turnovers this week but the falcons have to fail. We didn’t try to buy a Super Bowl we added a few pieces to help Brady but we had the veteran roster and the coaching staff was in place a much better coaching staff.

  12. John Ransom Says:

It is an easy team to root for. Let’s hope we can find some DBs at the local Jamba Juice to tide us over.

And…can we please mix in more play action on 1st down? How many times do we have to run RW up the gut for a loss of 2 yards before we conclude that it does not work?

  13. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

We need to stop running left. It seemed like all of them got stuffed behind the line. Another thing that needs to stop are all the – yardage plays. Watching Bucky run was exciting, watching White even on his good plays was painful

No queston The FAs like ME13, Baker, Whitehead, LVD, Gaines played great. Some other lesser ones are gone or on IR. One… is missing and presumed stoned.

    Go Bucs!
