Bucs Aren’t Very Disciplined

September 27th, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Joe is willing to overlook some sloppy play in the first four weeks of the season. But after the fourth game, that’s 23 percent of the season played.

By the fifth game, things ought to be getting better.

Currently, entering Week 4, the Bucs are the fourth-worst team committing penalties. They have 16 through three games, per The Football Database.

Before you start wringing your hands, the Bucs are tied with the Chiefs, Bills, Rams and Colts. The trick here is the Chiefs and the Bills are able to overcome their penalties by scoring points. The Bucs have struggled offensively the past two weeks.

But here is where it gets depressing. The Bucs have three defensive offsides penalties called on them.

The Bucs have two roughing-the-passer penalties called on them.

The Bucs have two sacks all season (all against the Commandos).

It’s almost like sacks are an accident for this team; a mistake. Not a strategy. It really didn’t have to be this way.

    Bowles Career Record is 46-61
This is who he is and who his teams are.

That is just sloppy football. If the Bucs were in the middle of the pack, I would agree. But 4th worst?!

I don’t know who TB is. Somewhere between Coach of the Year after beating the Lions so incredibly shorthanded on defense, or fired for the performance against a rookie QB who still has not thrown for a TD after 3 games.

Sorry, but after last week’s game, I am fearful of what Barkley is going to do to Todd’s defense. Barkley might be setting embarrassing records this Sunday.

  3. Pelsbuc61 Says:

    Well stated Davenport.

  4. Lt. Dan Says:

When will we stop with the “defensive genius” BS?

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Fans are fickle aren’t they? I’ll reserve judgement on the season until we all see how the Bucs play through November.

  6. Bobby Says:

I saw multiple false start penalties too, 2 consecutive on Yaya and JTS during Broncos game. Penalties are killing this team.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Davenport … ‘Bowles Career Record is 46-61. This is who he is and who his teams are.’

What I care about is how a coach does with MY TEAM. Far as I’m concerned, his record as our DC is 50-36 to date in the regular season and 6-3 in 4 post seasons. And as a HC he’s 19-18 in 2+ regular seasons and 1-2 in 2 post-seasons.

Considering that the Bucs went through a major rebuilding starting in 2022 (and are still rebuilding & cash-strapped), his performance to date is pretty much what I expected, if not slightly better. And especially considering that the Bucs aren’t exactly the most talented team in the league at this point.

  8. Pewter Power Says:

Apparently they can’t sustain the Detroit intensity more than one week but Todd Bowles isn’t worried at all. He won’t turn up his intensity and light a fire, he probably thinks Denver was a fluke. How do we keep hiring these Tennessee ready coaches

Justin fields is quarterbacking a 3-0 team and he can’t throw hmm could it be coaching and pass rush

  9. ModHairKen Says:

    Defense Rules, spot on.

  10. ModHairKen Says:

2-1. With injuries to 2 starting DL, RT, CBs and All Pro Safety? Not bad.

Terrible effort at home against a horrible Denver team. But it was a wake up call.

Let’s see what they do under pressure.

  11. #99 the big fella Says:

    Well said !! Defense Rules

  12. Sacker58 Says:

Licht holding on to Joe(trying shoyinka) because they had huge draft capital tied up in him.Along with Hall and Nelson who rarely sniff a sack. Are reasons why we have two sacks tallied.
Pressures are great ,but unless they cause turnovers are moot.
With Vea tying up two blockers most of the time there’s no excuse to not have more sacks and not have to use backers and safeties to try to get to the qb while exposing the secondary.

  13. Beeej Says:

I’m gonna be depressed if Denver goes back to sucking this week

  14. FortMyersDave Says:

Pewter Power; Simple equation to explain the Steelers and Bucs: Tomlin > Bowles (at least in the regular season, as Todd Wright has pointed out, the Steelers tend to grab their ankles in the playoffs).

Beej: If the Broncos were not playing the Jets, I would be willing to bet they get boat raced but since they are playing the Jets I can see Rodgers coming out flat like Mayfield and the Broncos get to 0.500, then they will lose 5 in a row…… Hate to say it but Payton > both Bowles and Saleh who has a record of 19-34 as Jets skipper. Seems like there are a lot of parallels between Bowels and Saleh…..

  15. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs are 2-1, and in 1st place in the NFC South. So it’s obvious that they are doing something right.

They have been playing good teams with a patched up roster

They deserve more credit than criticism

  16. Pewter Power Says:

How are Bucs in first place in the nfc south. We have no win in division the saints do. If we are in first place we shouldn’t be.

  17. Tony Says:

    @Sacker58

I think that’s part of the reason why Yaya isn’t doing much right now. Basically because Vita & Kancey are out & he’s gonna be getting more attention since we all know Tryon won’t do that much so teams really don’t have to worry about him.

  18. Dave Pear Says:

Like a moth to a flame, Todd’s mom races in to defend him when fans criticize him. Results in certain opinions are not to be considered. There are far more words to be written if you ignore the results and look for all the excuses. Todd’s defensive prowess is way overrated, stemming from being the “blitz package genius” which is years old and obsolete. His bend over and break down defense is not yielding the points to go along with the yards. Even a pitiful rookie QB can light up the Todd.

And, if you pair Todd’s offense with the 2020 defense that won the Super Bowl, Bucs finish 7-10.

    Genius all right.

    Todd is great, for sure.

  19. Richard Dickson Says:

We’ve been this way *forever*. It’s been decades and however many special teams coordinators, and it still feels like we can’t run a return without a hold being called.

  20. JonBucsfan Says:

    He’s a defensive genius but…

    His teams are not disciplined!
He allows week teams to be competitive and worst even win!
His players are never conditioned coming out of preseason!
    He plays soft/safe when ahead!
He has a tendency to blow big plays!
He’s late to pull the plug on underperforming players!

But, the players really respond and respect him and did I mention he is a defensive genius!!!

  21. Tye Says:

Bowels is what he has always been: a lousy HC!
Bucs will never be a consistent contender until they have a HC worthy of the position in the NFL!!!

  22. Tony Says:

Robert Quinn Chandler Jones & JPP are sitting out there & Barrett said he’d come back if the Bucs called him. I know JPP is older now but he’d probably still play better than Tryon right now.

  23. Badbucs Says:

Todd is just like the old quote about Steve Deberg. “He’s just good enough to get you beat.” He’s done a respectable job under difficult circumstances but he’s not taking us to the promised land. Undisciplined describes us exactly. That’s coaching and Todd has to wear that. We are not consistent. We play great in stretches then shoot ourselves in the foot. This is what is so maddening about Todd’s running the team and ultimately why he will be gone at the end of his contract. It is a little unfair to him as he will have suffered through all the rebuild and cap issues just to be fired when those problems are relieved. Thanks Todd now get the hell out. Poor Todd.
