Buccaneers 37, Washington 20

September 8th, 2024

So the Buccaneers scored on their first five possessions today in the home opener at The Licht House.

That’s what Joe calls execution!

The Commanders looked like a JV team against the somewhat sloppy Bucs. Tampa Bay had too many presnap penalties and negative plays on offense but they overcame over and over and over behind four Baker Mayfield touchdown passes.

On defense, the run stuffing was leaky containing rookie Washington QB Jayden Daniels and Brian Robinson had a decent day on the ground, but Washington was no match. Stud Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin had just 17 yards receiving until the final garbage time drive.

The bad news is the Bucs lost cornerbacks Zyon McCollum with a concussion, backup Bryce Hall with a major leg injury and Josh Hayes left with an ankle injury.

Major kudos to safety/nickel Christian Izien moving to outside corner and being more than adequate.

Formerly MIA lineabacker SirVocea Dennis had a sack and a crushing hit. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka had a strip-sack. Lotta good things on the field from various Buccaneers.

And of course, rookie running back Bucky Irving had the home crowd chanting, “Bucky, Bucky, Bucky!” He was electric on the ground with 9 carries for 62 yards, plus 2 catches for 14 yards.

What can Joe say about Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. They were in midseason form (as they appeared all training camp) and each had big days. Evans had two touchdowns to bring his career total to 96. Godwin caught one, as well.

Outside of the injuries, the Bucs couldn’t have had a much better start. And whattya know, the overrated Falcons got smacked around at home by the Steelers, 18-10, in a very physical game.

It’s a great day in Tampa Bay! Bring on the Lions next Sunday!

  1. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs finished with 3.7 yards per carry, so basically this was a loss. Unacceptable. We must get 4.0 yards per carry or better, and I don’t want to hear about points, yards, having a fun modern offense, I don’t want to hear any of that. If you can’t line-up and run up the middle and get 4 yards per carry, the season is over.

  2. Durango 95 Says:

    Offense looking sharp today.

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Brad john’s best year. That’s what Mayfield reminded me of today.

If he plays like this every week…I’m sold.

Irving and White were both great in my book.

    Feels like Magic is happening!

  4. Permanently Moderated Says:

Great game, no matter what the regular whiners say.

  5. Kgh4life Says:

Finally, the Bucs seems to have a OC that can scheme and adjust, the run game overall needs work, but it’s still early. Watch out for Bucky.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Rod Munch

Keep in mind the offensive line still needs to gel. No one realistically expected perfection today.

But, whether you want to hear it or not, the points mattered.

Personally, I’m glad we were not seeing OVER commitment to the run.

  7. HC Grover Says:

Bowles has outfitted Plan 9 with a secret weapon. An SRB (solid rocket bootser) he can fire himself when needed. They crushed the Redskins.

  8. Herbiebuc Says:

Rod munch what are you ?

    Brad Johnson’s best year.

Brain completed that word…fingers did not.

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Bucs sounded a little rusty at the start of the game, They shook it off. Canales who?

  11. Mr_Barf Says:

The difference between continuity & rebuilds

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai – No, I refuse to accept that. The Bucs have to run the ball up the gut, that’s all that matters. Running the ball and playing defense. That’s Bowles Ball, and that’s how you win in 197… I mean 2024!

Anyways, next week we get the Lions, who had one of the best run defenses in football and one of the worst pass defenses in football, so expect a lot more runs up the middle for no gain!

  13. Godlovesbucs Says:

Rod, so the Washington team was better? They had a better ypc. Good for them, I wish that was our team!!!

  14. BucsFanInLA Says:

@Rod Munch are you serious?! Get that stick out of your ar$e and enjoy the victory. Sheesh! Baker was almost perfect, Evans was a sight to behold. Go Bucs!

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Been saying all along that Dave Canales is not ready to be a head coach. Glad he took it though. I really like the distribution of our new offense.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Godlovesbucs, Rod is yanking our chains 😉

    lol

  17. Tucker Says:

Pretty good first game, once this team really irons things out should be a fun season go bucs!!!

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So…we dropped Spectrum cable and today I signed up for YouTube TV…so glad we did. Saving about $120 monthly!

Got to watch the game (we have an antenna too but the stupid thing doesn’t get FOX). So worth it!

CB went from a strength to a weakness pretty quick

  21. HC Grover Says:

Finally a good 1st half thanx to new OC. Canales was holding this team back. His true talent is showinf up in Carolina. LOL

Yeah, it’s too bad the Bucs had to kneel at the end, they were at 4.0 before that, but then ended under 4. Ridiculous to lose the game like that.

  23. firethecannons Says:

Really fun to watch game! Everybody was good!

  24. B Says:

Well it was nice to get an extra preseason game this year

  25. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Nice troll job, Rod. Big win today, I’ll take it. Baker played amazing today. Only had one really bad throw that was almost picked but that’s it. Looking forward to the Lions matchup next week.

  26. Bojim Says:

Yeah Rod. The coaches hear you!! lol

  27. ChiBuc Says:

Did Yaya play? Not trying to be rod-castic, I’m just not finding any stat line and don’t recall gene singing his name

  28. Buchen61 Says:

Only a brain dead idiot would trash talk this game…. Must be why Rod is here

  29. ManzielMadness Says:

For the Washington defense sucks crowd, they have 4 pro bowlers. DT Jonathan Allen, DT Daron Payne, LB Bobby Wagner, and LB Frankie Luvu. Dante Fowler, Jeremy Chin and Clelin Ferrel aren’t scrubs either.

  30. MadMax Says:

scrubs, bunch of nothings….keep at it my guys, im smiling proud

  31. Vinny from NYC Says:

Rod Munch, good news if you don’t count Trask taking a knee than Bucs averaged 4.01 yards per carry. So I guess you love them now.

  32. Usfbuc Says:

Also if you look at Bucky (our RB1) he was well over the 4 yards per carry

  33. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

Fantastic win!! Great way to start the season!!

  34. unbelievable Says:

Offense was pretty dang efficient, even with the penalties and the o-line being inconsistent (even Wirfs slipped up). Overall I think it’s a good sign of what’s to come.

Unsure what to make of the defense. They seemed pretty stout in the 1st half but started slipping a bit in the 2nd half. And obviously it’s against a rookie QB and a team that was terrible last season. Of course there are injuries piling up too, so I won’t pretend that didn’t play a part.

Depth is definitely going to be tested this year, as the injury bug seems to be sticking around Tampa

  35. unbelievable Says:

Also Winfield was in position to stop Daniel’s from scoring on that last TD and totally whiffed. Not what you wanna see from the highest paid safety in the league.

    ——–

Winfield did have him, but when Braswell hit Daniels from the other side, he basically knocked him into the endzone.

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

    Great game Baker 👏👏!!

  39. adam from ny Says:

probably baker’s best game other than the “perfection game” he played in green bay last year…

good to see baker cookin’ in the pot

  40. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

You noob are you serious? Have you never in your life ever heard of sarcasm??? You can’t tell when someone’s not being serious??? Wow I thought Baker fanbois were sensitive!

Baker looked in mid season form as well. His performance made not getting in the end zone on the 1st drive AGAIN a distant memory. He was decisive with the ball and one again showed how exciting he can be just when you think he’s sacked and he squirts out and makes a positive play. You can’t even knock him for that td he could’ve run in thinking Evans was going to keep running instead of pulling up. The boys looked good. Baker earned his check not so sure of Wirfs. Mauch should’ve added muscle and power not empty fat weight

  41. Kenton Smith Says:

Rod Munch thanks for the commentary to aid me through opening day. You’ve kept me nonstop chuckling. And there’s something to be said for that ! Other than that though you’re completely full of…. It’s also worth the price of admission to see how you get under everyone’s skin. It’s funnier than hell and I for one do appreciate it. Next up the Lions. I’ll bet my ass our team is watching them play right now. I went up to Detroit 8 months ago, tough team and tough place to play. You’ve remarked how badly Baker choked up there. I suggest you watch and learn next week. Our dog Baker don’t choke. Choke on that !

  42. Dadgumit Says:

    TE non existant

  43. Dave Pear Says:

Ros Munch is challenging sarcasm detectors, people. He’s a modern offense lover. As most of us should be. I missed the ruse for a second myself.

    Carry on. Go Bucs.
