Battle-Tested

Jamel Dean shares thoughts on Bucs defense.

If the Bucs can play defense anywhere close to how they played in Detroit last week, the Broncos don’t have a prayer today.

Last week Joe mentioned to Jamel Dean that the way the Bucs defense locked down one of the best teams in the NFL, it may have been the Bucs’ best defensive effort since beating the Chiefs in the Super Bowl in February 2021.

Dean didn’t exactly disagree.

“That was a great team defensive performance by us,” Dean said. “That is the type of game that shows, when it comes down to it, who can withstand blows.

“It definitely felt like a playoff game. It showed where we stand, that in the heat of the battle we can stay strong and trust each other.”

One key with the pass defense is how sticky Zyon McCollum, Jordan Whitehead, Christian Izien and Dean himself were against Detroit’s receivers.

“We try to make the quarterback’s job tough,” Dean said. “The tighter [the coverage] the more accurate he has to be.”

From the sidelines when he got a chance, Bucs center Graham Barton said he appreciated and admired how the defense was playing.

“Very grateful for the defense,” Barton said. “They kept us in the game many times [with big plays]. Really proud of those guys.”

Like Dean, Barton said going up to Detroit sort of battle-tested the Bucs in the early weeks of the season.

“Good first test on the road.”

Jamal dean will leave no pass left un caught.
Look who is the first man in line to gloat.
You cannot make this s*** up.
    We’re doomed tomorrow….

    Stop the nonsense man.

Sean Peyton’s record against the Bucs is 21-10. Dean hasn’t had an interception in ~30 games.
    Now, who’s talking nonsense?

Jamel Dean … “It definitely felt like a playoff game. It showed where we stand, that in the heat of the battle we can stay strong and trust each other.”

Great second line, and I’d bet that’s exactly what Todd Bowles preaches to his guys day-in and day-out.

Our defense already is showing as formidable. If they continue to be intense and focussed as they are now when Vea, Kancey and Winfield return, look out! Add the capabilities of our offense and special teams and we can expect an exciting season. We will earn respect accordingly. Now that I have seen a small sample of what can be I am super charged.

    Go Bucs!

It’s great that Dean and others are mentally playing like these are all play-off games.

Nix needs to be heavily pressured.

Don’t worry about the stats, stats are for losers

Just focus on winning the game

    By any means necessary

  10. California Buc Says:

The performance by the defense reminded me of the old Selmon brother days. If any of you have ever played the game, you would understand how great of a recovery Dean made after being burnt. The guys rallied around him and told him that he was the number one corner and he believed them. The young guys are breathing new confidence in to Dean. He has all the skills but has lost confidence. As Zyon flies, so will Dean. Why Izen is not a starter is crazy. They should also trade Windfeild for Riddick. This equals Super Bowl win! They can throw in Kancey. He is no good in a humid climate and will continue to have this same injury.
