Baker Mayfield Vs. Broncos Blitz
September 22nd, 2024Just based on the following information from the PFF tribe, if the Bucs want to push the ball and not lean on their pathetic run game, today’s game with the Broncos could be a blowout.
The Broncos like to blitz. And blitz. And blitz some more. Per the PFF tribe, they may want to be careful doing that today facing Baker Mayfield. The Bucs quarterback has been slicing and dicing defenses that blitz this year.
Mayfield ranks second in the NFL in passing yards against the blitz (257).
Go ahead Denver, bring it!
If the Broncos want to roll the dice and have less defense backs trying to cover Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and/or Rachaad White, be Joe’s guest.
The only fly in the ointment here is Bucs right tackle Justin Skule, who is starting in place of Luke Goedeke (concussion). You trust Justin Skule to pick up a blitz? Joe doesn’t.

Baker Mayfield could exploit Denver's blitz-heavy approach
Mayfield has the 2nd most passing yards (257) against the blitz this season. He'll face a Broncos D that blitzes at the highest rate on passing plays, so Mayfield could have success attacking their aggressive approach. pic.twitter.com/x6JlilLHfD

If the OL plays well, Bucs should go off. I can see them taking away Mike and the rest of the guys having good days. Well maybe not the TEs haha but Godwin JMac White and Irving. Maybe Palmer catches a bomb.

The Bucs Right Cadaver is the great equalizer. He can take anyone playing opposite him and turn them into an all world monster. More lethargic, slovenly play from a RT, I haven’t seen.

I re-watched 2 of Skule’s sacks — ball was snapped, he took a half step back, planted his feet, and Hutchinson went around him to the outside like he wasn’t there, amazing

Beej … ‘Hutchinson went around him to the outside like he wasn’t there’.
Skule is no small guy (6’6″ & 315 lbs), but Hutchinson is pretty good sized too (6’7″ & 270 lbs). More importantly, he’s damned good (maybe that’s why the Lions drafted him Rnd 1, #2 pick?). Odds of Skule keeping him neutralized without help were pretty slim.
I remember watching those first 3 sacks, and thinking that Skule was taking his step back, but that his feet weren’t really planted sufficiently for him to be on-balance by the time that Hutchinson was already beside him. Looked to me like Skule was ‘behind the play’ on each of those 3 from start to finish. And the result, without help, was rather predictable.

Oh it was a blowout alright.
