Baker Mayfield Passing Chart

September 9th, 2024

Baker Mayfield

NextGen Stats already has Baker Mayfield’s pass chart from yesterday uploaded. So Joe’s taking a gander at the interesting graphic.

Two things jump out. One is, Mayfield threw a lot to either the far left side of the field or the far right side. He only threw 4 of his 30 attempts between the hashmarks, completing two.

Joe knows the old saying that short quarterbacks can’t see over the middle very easily could apply here. But Joe doesn’t know if that is accurate or not.

Mayfield also only threw four passes 18 or more yards past the line of scrimmage. Two of those went for touchdowns. The longest was Jalen McMillan’s 32-yard score.

Was Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s goal to lure Washington’s defensive backs to defend short passes and then burn them with a long one?

Excellent game yesterday from Mayfield.

I would also note that he only threw one time to a TE

  2. Baking with Coen Says:

The chef is just beginning. Coen that is.

    LFB!!!!!

  3. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    MVP type shizz

  4. OHBucFan Says:

TBBF is on point. The spread on the graph is typical given the WRs the Bucs have and a RB coming out of the backfield. You want more middle? Then more Otton. It’ll come.

  5. Willow Says:

The CFL QB,s live on the sidelines passes. Maybe Liam copied that.

  6. Fan of the South Says:

Against a team that ranked 32nd in yards allowed in 2023, 262 Pass/ Game, 126 Rush/ Game, 2.25 TD’s / Game and 30.4 Points/Game the Bucs were just a bit over average in passing and below average in the Run Game.

Saints production against a team that gave up the 4th fewest yards in 2023 was much more impressive.

Bucs got the win and as of Week 1 sit @ second in the NFC South.

I’ll wait until I see Mayfield against a real team before I anoint him MVP and declare the Bucs Superbowl Contenders.

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Perhaps those empty spaces were intentionally taken away by the Football Team and Mayfield was just taking what was there. We know the lions are looking at this chart and will probably try to take away what we see here. And we know they are capable. Should be an interesting chess match next week.

  8. Trask To The Future Says:

Mayfield had a great game and so did our playmakers.

But Washington was the worst D in the NFL last year.

The real test comes next game.

  9. Durango 95 Says:

Absolutely love the way this guy plays the game. More importantly his teammates love the way he plays the game. He was lights out yesterday. Green Bay, Philly last year and his game yesterday. If that level of play becomes the standard. Look out.

  10. Lt. Dan Says:

I think as much as anything those throws speaks to Mayfield’s arm strength.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Fan of the South- your comparison is worthless given all of the changes that occurred. They are not the same team.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting distribution Joe. I’m wondering if it says more about Baker’s ‘height’ (preference for not going over the middle) OR more about our WR strengths vs Washington’s Secondary weaknesses. Mike & Chris especially are both very good near the sidelines, and Washington’s CBs always seemed to be a step behind them on those near-sideline catches.

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

All I know is that looked as good or better than any offensive game last year, and it’s just week 1.

We were on like the 4th string with defense and they were still balling. This team has a great vibe LFG

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

    2nd in points
    6th in yards
    4th in passing yards
    16th in rushing yards

Not a horrible week 1 debut for an OC lol.

Defense was very impressive given all the bodies out. JTS looked like a different player out there. Sometimes it takes a while. Fingers crossed it’s a new JTS.

  15. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I bet Canales wish he had Baker as his QB. Canales and Bryce Young had their asses handed to them.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Detroit ain’t no joke..

Never thought that would be a thing. 🤣

  17. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Yeah, Washington’s D was terrible last year and may be still, BUT the Bucs went out and did what good teams are supposed to do… dominate bad teams! And they put up big time points. And Mayfield had the highest passer rating at 146.4, 4th highest passing yards and 4 TDs with 0 Ints.

As dominant as the Saints score indicates, they were playing Carolina with an over-hyped QB and over-hyped HC. Carr had the second highest passer rating, but only threw for 200 yards, 3 TDs with 0 Ints. I wonder if Slimy Saints fans are as crabby as some Bucs fans seem to be this morning after a big win?

I understand “cautious optimism” but c’mon, enjoy the win.

  18. A Bucs Fan Says:

With all the expected injuries on defense I’m not expecting a win next week. The Bucs could be down as much as 3 DL and 4 DB ( 4 starters total and primary back ups). Regardless they will be banged up against Detroit. If this offense puts up 30 points on the lions when the defense gets healthy the NFL will be on notice.

  19. BuckyBuc Says:

so fresh so clean, amazing game form baker.

  20. Buc4evr Says:

So happy we have Coen, the guy is 10x better than Canales. He is playing to the offenses strengths and our opponents weaknesses. This is what a real OC looks like.

  21. heyjude Says:

Baker did have an excellent game. I always love how he escapes the pocket before the sack the majority of the time. You think he is going down, and then he is running away with the ball. Our offense is looking awesome.

  22. Beeej Says:

We had possession time of 33:41, love that

  23. Kenton Smith Says:

It’s going to take us going up and beating Detroit convincingly to make these naysayers understand. And I really believe that we will. Anyone who has watched since last years playoffs knows that we can play with anybody in this league. Go Bucs!!

  24. First Name Greatest Says:

Defense and Bowles awful pass defensive scheme will keep the Bucs from beating good teams. But it’s nice to have a W to start the season

  25. David Says:

What strikes me, and I noticed it during the game, they did not utilize the middle of the field a lot. Hopefully that gets fixed along with some run blocking issues during Detroit

  26. Buchen61 Says:

Who are you people . We dominated both sides of the ball and the score board. Joebucsuck. com in full force…. What a joke

    Go Bucs !!!!!!!!

  27. WiseCrack Says:

Sure we lost starters due to injury BUT one of the biggest if not the biggest starters lost was not due to injury at all, KJ Britt.

While he will certainly show better vs a QB that is not bouncing around running 4.2 40s. There can be no doubt that Dennis is the guy over KJ.

That said, it was not KJs speed that killed him. It was his ability to wrap up the ball when he got there. Speed might help that???

  28. drdneast Says:

With two defensive lineman out yesterday I believe the Bucs knew they had to hold onto the ball and dominate the clock and not give Daniels multiple times to do his little scrambling act because from first appearances it seemed like he didn’t have a clue what to do with multiple zone schemes the Bucs were showing him. He looked lost when he held onto the ball gazing down field. If that was the purpose the Bucs certainly succeeded.

  29. jarrett Says:

Anything happens to Zyon McCollum or Jamel Dean on the outside this season is TOAST !!!!!

  30. A Bucs Fan Says:

I think that Liam will take what the defense gives him. They could very well work the middle next week against a tougher defensive backfield.

  31. Kgh4life Says:

Some you Bucs fans are something else. The Bucs win, it’s a negative, they loose the world is ending. What do you guys want?

  32. Wild Bill Says:

Good win for the Bucs. But Wasington is far from being a contender. Bucs offense looked great against a very average D. Bucs D looked very good except for containment of Washington’s young qb. That young kid sliced and diced the Bucs with speed and illusiveness. The kid is exciting running but his slim frame may not survive the long season. Good start for the new season but Detroit will be a much more accurate measure of the Bucs overall capability. GO BUCKS!

  33. BucsfaninOregon Says:

JTS had a sack! A real sack. Watch out for falling frogs from the sky.

  34. Canabuc Says:

People keep saying that Washington’s defense was ranked last last year. This may have been true but they had also traded away or lost injury a significant part of their front seven. They reloaded in that area and also picked up a couple players on the back end both in the draft and free agency. They also had a very good defensive coordinator in Dan quinn.

I also had to face the Eagles twice last year as well as the Cowboys twice who were both high-powered offenses. At the end of the day yes it was week one and it was not a great team but let’s not take anything away from how the team played.

My biggest concern are the significant number of defensive injuries and how that will hamstring us especially against better offenses like Detroit.

  35. geno711 Says:

Bucs defense shut down McLaurin and really everyone else besides Daniels on his runs. Pretty one dimensional. I mean Washington got 70 of their 299 yards on a meaningless drive in the 4th quarter when Tampa was playing soft in front zone.

  36. geno711 Says:

We gave up 55 of the 161 pass yards allowed on a meaningless drive at the end of the game.

Not sure how that was bad pass defense by Bowles and the Bucs.

  37. KABucs Says:

Great to watch Peter Schrager on GMF giving Baker Mayfield the game ball for his week 1 performances. I love how he starts off the intro talking about the Falcons and Kirk Cousins. LOL Good stuff!

  38. Oddball Says:

Wow. Pretty much zero love for the Bucs on GMFB. 45 second segment and over half was on JD. Next Bears/Titans segment has been going for 5 minutes. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The disrespect continues…

  39. First Name Greatest Says:

    geno711

Do you watch other NFL defenses? The Bucs secondary is RARELY even contesting passes, they are so scared to get beat deep they play so soft and allow easy completions it’s why Jared Goff eats them alive every game. You need to vary the coverages up and actually challenge receivers from time to time.

I was not impressed by Daniels as a passer but as a runner he’s dangerous. Now with the secondary gashed with injuries I fear Bowles will be even more soft and scared with his coverages

  40. geno711 Says:

I would ask you back do you watch NFL defenses.

Do you understand that some type of zone is run by all NFL teams as their primary defense? Not man to man.

Bowles defenses have worked. How many years does he have to be in the top half of points allowed for you to believe that? What about the Super Bowl run. We won because of defense and us having the exact philosophy you are complaining about, making sure that all of Mahomes completions were in front of us and not getting beat deep. How many other teams would have shut down Mahomes in a Super Bowl.

I am ok with giving Bowles and the team cr*p the next year when they failed against the Rams and Kupp. But guess what, so did everyone else that year.

  41. atlbuc28 Says:

Fan of the South: So Dan Quinns defense was ranked 5th last year with Dallas…. Stick to your Saints fandom

  42. geno711 Says:

  43. Oddball Says:

    @KA

Guess I missed that. Over reaction on my part.

  44. Pryda30 Says:

I’m sure the OC has a plan by midyear. I’m sure he’ll have throws all the field

  45. David Says:

Defense was very impressive with the DT and CB injuries. Their whole offense was the rookie scrambling

  46. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

What was the time of possession?
With the thin defensive line, I felt like the buccaneers needed to win the time of possession.

  47. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bakers escapability is up there with the best QBs in the league…..he has a natural feel for the game always knows how to maneuver when the pocket breaks down.

I believe that the Bucs are on the verge of having a true franchise quarterback.

  48. BucFanforLife Says:

No need to pass over the middle when we can pound them running it. RBs with our improved OL looked solid!

Seems to me than Canales wasn’t the reason why Baker lit it up last season after all; it was all Baker. Duh! That traitor Canales sob got his team smashed by the Aints, and I almost felt bad for Young.. I said almost lol. And how bout them Falcons! 🤣

We be 1 and 0 mates! LFG Yrrrrrrr! 🏴‍☠️💪🦜

  49. GP Says:

I wonder how many other teams had to call up practice squad players for their first game of the season, AND give them significant playing time?
Overall, I call this a real TEAM effort.
It’s obvious that the mindset is a winning one.
As opposed to years past (far too many of them) with the ‘going through the motions’ mindset that rarely wins games.

  50. stpetebucfan Says:

I get nervous passing over the middle anyway, lots of bad things can happen and a 6-4 DL can reach up and swat a pass from a 6’5″ guy just as quickly as the 6 footer. I concede the vision difference.

So IF vision difference is a weakness of Baker’s why not play to his strength his big arm. On the outside ME13 is almost unstoppable. The coverage on that first TD was really great, the anticaption and “invisible connection” between Baker and ME was freaking a thing of beauty!!!

Look where ME13 is when Baker releases the ball! Totally blanketed by the DB but Baker puts it in the spot where only ME13 can grab it which he makes look easy. IF you truly love football, THAT PLAY, was a total thing of beauty! Savor it!!! Embrace it!!! Two Bucs just combined to create a masterpiece!

  51. Defense Rules Says:

geno711 … I gave up long ago trying to convince the Bowles’ skeptics that the real measure of a defense’s impact is Points Allowed, not Yards Allowed. I readily concede though that several other measures come into play …

o Red Zone TD Percentage: Surrendering 3 points (or less) is far better than giving up 7 or 8 points. Todd Bowles the DC is a master at that.

o 3rd Down & 4th Down Percentages: Our defense has to be able to get off the field or it’ll just wear down (we’ve seen that happen more than once). Interestingly, Bowles best year here using this parameter was in 2019, when our defense only allowed 34.4% 3rd down conversions & 48.1% 4th down conversions (35.9% combined). His worst year here was 2020 SB year when our defense allowed 41.7% combined. (Other years: 2023 – 41.6%; 2022 – 38.8%; 2021 – 39.3%).

o Takeaways: Sacks are nice, but I prefer takeaways every day. Bowles is very good IMO at stressing ball security, and our giveaways have been ‘acceptable’ IMO for the last couple of years (22 in 2022 and 18 in 2023). Our D did a decent job in the Takeaway department last year (26 Takeaways, giving us a PLUS 8 Turnover Differential), but we sucked in 2022 (20 Takeaways, giving us a MINUS 2 Turnover Differential). And our season record reflected that.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

BucsFanforLife … ‘That traitor Canales sob got his team smashed by the Aints, and I almost felt bad for Young.’

Traitor? I’m ecstatic that Dave Canales jumped at the opportunity that Tepper dangled in front of him, and took Harold Goodwin & Joe Gilbert with him.

  53. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … Agree with you; Let Baker play to his strengths. Making him throw over the middle is probably analogous to our OC pounding our RBs into the middle of the OLine far too often last year in some vain attempt to prove that ‘by golly, we can do it with enough practice’.

  54. orlbucfan Says:

Do people on here (including the Joes) realize we have a new offensive coach and his staff this season? Yeah, we do. I’m tired of the dissing White and JTS. Both players did well yesterday, and did not get injured. What a shock, huh? Even with the defensive hits, Bucs have a legitimate chance to win in Detroit. That includes beating the refs, too. Just wait until Coen and his offensive players get totally used to each other. Whew–wee!!

  55. Don'tBmad Says:
