Baker Mayfield Gives All His Teammates Credit For The Win

September 16th, 2024

Leader.

You want to know why Baker Mayfield’s teammates like him so much? Well, he hustles and he wins, that helps.

But Mayfield really doesn’t have an ego. He has just as much fun going to a Rays game and having a few beers with his offensive line as he does relaxing at a neighborhood watering hole with his receivers or linebackers.

Mayfield seems like he can relate to everyone on the roster.

So yesterday, Joe is confident all of Mayfield’s teammates heard him as he gave thanks to the etnire active roster for the way everyone pitched in to get a landmark win in Detroit.

Linebacker SirVocea Dennis had just as much of an impact as Lavonte David. Christian Izien had as much impact as Jordan Whitehead. Greg Gaines had as much impact as Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

“Yeah, for starters, having a bunch of guys out, a lot of guys stepping up in a huge way, and for it to come down to critical moments in a really tight ball game and people – everybody stepping up is so big for everybody on this team,” Mayfield said. “To stick together, obviously a bigger outcome than the last time we were here like you mentioned, but it’s a new season.

“Still have a lot of games left, but for us, building chemistry and building this resiliency and the culture that we want, this is a huge win for us, and so we have to continue to build on that.”

Again, Joe thinks the last time the Bucs had so many different players making an impact in the game on the defensive side of the ball was the Bucs’ Super Bowl win over the Chiefs.

Only yesterday it was backups making plays right and left, not the stars.

A lot of yelling at the TV screen yesterday — both good and bad. That was great run. Go Baker!!

  2. geno711 Says:

Always great to come back with a victory. Ready to come back to Tampa.

Great sports weekend with a concert thrown in.

Friday – Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top at Pine Knob.
Saturday – University of Michigan at the Big House and then the Detroit Tigers game.
    Sunday – Bucs victory.

  3. BucU Says:

Defense was simply not going to quit despite Detroit having opportunity after opportunity to score especially in the 4th quarter. I applaud the entire team.
Except Callijah Kancey. He’s a bum.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Where’s all the “Baker threw a pick” from last Detroit game? You know who you are.

  5. Chief Says:

All the naysayers about Mayfield and this Bucs team are eating some crow today.

Still a long ways to go, but I read that the Bucs are like 9-2 over their last 11 games. These guys are vastly underrated as is our fantastic QB.

Incredible effort by everyone to beat a team many have predicted to go to the Super Bowl this year with a lot of quality players out.

This could be a special year.

geno711 thanks for the reporting from the motor city. I was there in January and that Ford Center stays loud doesn’t it ! But I’ll be perfectly fine not having to go to that damn stadium for the rest of my life. Please team I believe we can still win playoff games at home. All we have to do is get the home field thru the playoffs and I know we can do it. We don’t have to be the wild card or the road team to win ! So much work to do – let’s all go all in!

  7. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

    Good for you Geno!!!!
    LFBake!!!!

  8. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

I know its early but we are still in the race for the number one seed in the NFC.

    LFBake!!!!!

  9. Walter Says:

Anzalone got absolutely mauled by his own guy on that play, that looked like it hurt

  10. HC Grover Says:

What a nail biter. Still cant believe we won. Pinch me. The last 2 D stands were amazing.

  11. WiseCrack Says:

Hope Baker adds some different juke moves other than the dead leg. He used it twice this game and broke a half dozen ankles and egos.

However, that’s two games in a row he deployed this move multiple times. Predictability will lead you to getting you head handed to you in the NFL.

Let’s not pretend like that is not a real concern. I love Trask and wanted him to start before Baker lathered me up with moxie, baked me a cake and stroked my fandom.

I hate the idea of switch QBs mid-season for any reason

  12. Zoocomics Says:

@ModHairKen…First off, take it easy. Second yes, I’ll admit I’ve been on these boards criticizing Baker in that last drive in the playoffs. And? You want to call out those who criticized Baker in that playoff loss, after this great victory, ok and I still question if this kid is going to be able to “consistently” win us the game in a 2 minute offense. I think that’s the difference between a making the playoffs and going to the Super Bowl as it will come down to last minute field position for the win. Not for nothing, he still managed to throw clean pocket pick that was just a bad read, ironically it reminded me of the int during the last drive of that playoff loss.

I will admit that I’m apprehensive about Baker to start the season, but I’m quickly warming up to him. He’s last 2 weeks he’s been balling and yesterday sucked for him with Skule getting worked on almost every pass play… Wirfs has not been himself, our run game never got anything going yesterday and yet this team found a way to win. No one has really mentioned it but this reminded me of last year’s Week 1 victory over Minnesota. We were out stat-ed the whole game in Minnesota and yet we manage to win a close one and tough tough stadium.

Dare I say god help the NFC if we can get healthy with our 53-man roster, and perhaps Licht makes a bold trade for a disruptive edge rusher.

    Shake n bake!

  14. BuckyBuc Says:

    Go Bucs

  15. Tucker Says:

Watching the broadcast and seeing how the bucs silenced the crowd at times my goodness it was so awesome. Go bucs!!

  16. Tucker Says:

The broadcast team gushing over the lions almost all game could have done without that.

  17. First Name Greatest Says:

Wins is NOT a QB stat

Glad Baker is humble enough to realize the offense was baaaaaaaaad for long stretches and this was a TEAM win

  18. Marky Mark Says:

The lions were rattled and desperate as shown by all the gimmick plays.

  19. Clay day Says:

As a big Bucs fan, for me, it boils to down to entertainment. After all, isn’t that the bottom line? And, I was sure entertained yesterday by the Bucs. Great job.

  20. SenileSenior Says:

Reminder: Mute the tv and turn on Gene Deckerhoff on the radio.

A great team effort! Go Bucs!!

  21. orlbucfan Says:

The Lions were just a bit over-confident, too. Their HC’s apology to the team and fans confirms it. Going for all those 4th downs just rubbed dirt in the Bucs’ face. Bucs got even and won. Wow! Bring on the Broncos. Go Bucs!

  22. Brandon Says:

I think we can all agree with me now after seeing Baker with a competent offensive coordinator and his former coordinator and how he’s doing in Carolina…. as I’ve said before, Canales was in over his head and he owes Baker big-time for bailing out his bad personnel and play calls and landing him a head coaching gig.

  23. BakerFan Says:

Bucs got a bargain on signing Mayfield. All the haters were saying that there will be a regression after signing his contract. No one said that about Winfield or Wirfs but me. Those two were coming off huge years and then signing large contracts. Arrow had to point down on both and right now you must say both have regressed for one reason or the other.

I believe both are pros and will get it back, but there will be slight regressions for both. Not for Mayfield, I think if he stays healthy and the team around him gets healthy the Arrow still points up for him.

  24. heyjude Says:

Could watch that video of Baker over and over again. Such a great play and TD. He was on fire!

  25. Ed Says:

Its a damn shame the Bucs couldn’t protect Baker with the scrub Skul trying to block Hutchinson. The offense was going to have a great game until they had to go away from the passing game because of the horrid right tackle who almost got Baker killed.

The Bucs have the potential to be one of the best offenses in the NFL if they give Mayfield time. He didn’t make a bad throw and his interception may have been because as the pro-Lion accouncers said, Evans and Godwin were in the same area and pulled 4 defenders into that spot.

  26. infomeplease Says:

BM6 is right! That game was a great TEAM road WIN. Hats off to D especially all the backups that totally balled out.

  27. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I love the win, but make a GD adjustment Liam!!!!

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker played good yesterday to me we played one of the top defensive line in the league yesterday. And Baker played good enough to help the team win so to me he had a good game. And I don’t care about ints when it’s still a lot of time left to play. Baker did what it took to help the team win and for that he played good. But it was a good team win because that defense played good especially with all the injuries.

  29. WanderingWallflower Says:

    @walter

I was looking for that comment. If either of those two weren’t flagged for concussion protocols, the nfl program is still lacking. Not the protocols after a concussion is diagnosed. The protocols taken after a questionable play occurs that might have caused a concussion.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Hell must be freezing over. I agree with Oneilbuc.
