Baker Mayfield: Film Will Show Broncos Were Hungrier

September 22nd, 2024

It’s been said that the Bucs have superior leadership.

That leadership didn’t show up today.

Mike Evans was clear after the game that Bucs didn’t have the fire of the Broncos, a sadsack NFL team. Well, Baker Mayfield seemed to agree with Evans, as Mayfield said in his post-mortem news conference.

“I think we’ll watch this tape and you can probably tell on the tape how much they wanted it more than us,” Mayfield said.

Can Tristan Wirfs get in the faces of these offensive linemen and scream some juice into them? One small example: Late in the game, Bucky Irving was juking successfully and fighting for yards — while half the offensive line was behind him watching like elderly women waiting for a buffet line to clear to they can swoop in and get extra ottage cheese.

Justin Skule? That guy may not be super talented, but he’s certainly capable of playing harder.

You either play to the whistle or you don’t. It’s a mentality.

Joe simply cannot understand how — at home — the Bucs couldn’t fight for every blade of grass, especially offensively.

Mayfield added that he thought the Bucs had a good week of practice but just “fell flat” in the first quarter and didn’t recover.

Everyone has a bad day. Having key players out made it worse. Sean Payton is an offensive guru and he knows how to exploit the Bucs defense when they aren’t on their game. It’s only one game, the Saints lost too. It isn’t time to jump ship or dump the tea. No complaints from me. It did worry me when Wirfs was slow getting up on one play.

  2. Ol' Boy Says:

    Consistently inconsistent.

  3. Bee Says:

He held the ball too long too many times which led to sacks. Threw a horrible pick into triple coverage for the 2nd week in a row. But it’s OK, this Bucs team has more fun than when Brady was here.

Joe and the Baker fans will make excuses for him I’m sure.

  4. Bubby Says:

Film will show baker had a bad day. A really bad day.

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Real good team don’t lose this sort of game

  6. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

It’s going to be a long season

  7. HC Grover Says:

Film will show worst Buc game of all time.

  8. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Didn’t get off the bus. Played flat, fat and happy. We’ve seen this before. Let’s just keep this from spiraling like last year at 4-7.

We desperately need our enforcers back – Vita and Donkey.

  9. Stuck Says:

We will see. The next few weeks they either rise up or they will be 2-5

  10. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Skule? Nah. Let’s not tee up expendable players as scapegoats.

Skule didn’t throw the pick and hold the ball too long. Skule didn’t have 82 yards passing start of the 4th quarter.

  11. Drunkinybor Says:

    Yeah they were hurt

  12. SBucs Says:

I think this game really showed who the Bucs are. Out coached, out played, soft mentally. The rot starts at the top. The GM can’t find a pass rush, the coaches can’t teach blocking, the play calling is stagnant, the receivers can’t find open space. Seven sacks to zero says more than meets the eye.

  13. JustVisiting Says:

Baker plays from his feelings, and the problem with that is that emotions are always changing. Professionalism and integrity are more reliable motivators.

  14. Citrus County Says:

The old saying “Don’t get too high and don’t get too low” should no longer apply. Sometimes the steady even temperament doesn’t work. If Bowles shows up with an even temperament tomorrow there’s a problem. Someone needs to put on their reading glasses and read the riot act to the entire team.

  15. Gofortheface30 Says:

Tristan’s play has not been near as dominant since he switched to LT. He’s also more of “one of the boys” than the identity of the line & vocal leader. His demeanor in general is almost kind of docile/gentle giant-ish. Sometimes a little mean streak would be welcome, getting in people’s faces would be welcome, everyone wondering aloud why we do not run behind him more is simple: he’s not the nasty road grater that sayyyyyy a Trent Williams is. Mike Evans, and Baker should have taken more ownership of firing the team up. The Bucs (despite what a lot of fans think) are NOT anywhere near talented enough to just show up and win and a reality check for fans that thought we didn’t need vita or Kancey to roll Denver. Well, you guys would be wrong.

  16. Lakeland Says:

The whole team stunk the field. You don’t get this kind of whooping when a few players sucks. This is a butt whooping where everyone sucks.

  17. Lakeland Says:

I knew the team was gonna pull a stinker when Mayfield said the GOAT were stressing these bums out. And then they had audacity to say they are more LAID back with him.

Today they showed how LAID BACK they really are

  18. Citrus County Says:

The Bucs pay Tom Moore. This would be a good time and he might be just the man, to deliver a message.

  20. ElioT Says:

Nothing but loser talk coming from everyone on this team.

Home field, a chance to go 3-0…

    Let everyone down.

    2-1 again.

    Eagles looking for blood.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Please guys. Everybody sucked because Denver came to Tampa to ball..Period. They were hungry and the better team. They jumped on us early like a pack of wolves. And we..were not expecting that. Give them credit. They kicked pur butts and humiliated us..Period. I think..our players thought…they are 0-2. They got nothing. And Denver was ready.

Does anyone smell a losing streak coming ?

  23. Cobraboy Says:

    Total team meltdown.

Bucs just got whipped in every phase of the game.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

Todd can make a team feel full and complacent more skillfully than anyone else in the league.

  25. Trask To The Future Says:

    MAYFIELD WAS TERRIBLE TODAY.

    *MY THEORY*…

Mayfield is struggling to pass over the middle. In fact, it looks like he has very little vision over the middle. He’s looking and throwing it outside or to a checkdown, or he’s scrambling to get out of the pocket.

My theory is that is HEIGHT is causing some problems.

Graham Barton is about 6’5.5″. Hainsey is 6’4″. So Mayfield now has a center that’s even taller and harder for him to see over. Mauch is 6’6″ and Skule is 6’6″ (inch taller than Goedeke). That’s his strong side view straight ahead and to the right.

I think Mayfield can’t see very well over the O-Line. So he often holds the ball too long waiting for some space in the line to see downfield. But that’s often too late on routes as well as when the pocket is starting to collapse.

  26. D-Rome Says:

I don’t have an issue with Todd Bowles personally, but he was out coached today.

  27. Just me Says:

    2 Things:

    1) The Bucs need to hire a consultant whenever they play Sean Payton. He has their number. Has for years. They clearly do not have any clue about how to even compete against him. They need to hire a consultant to help them develop productive game plans to beat Payton. Otherwise, they never will. Today proved that.

    2) For those who bet football ALWAYS bet the Bucs to LOSE whenever they face a rookie quarterback. They always do. And, until the Bucs make drastic changes, they always will.

Bonus: The team has Zero depth at key positions. So whenever there are injuries, expect a loss. They got lucky against the Lions. That was a once in a 50 year event.

  28. unbelievable Says:

Is anyone ready to admit that Wirfs looks completely average this year? It’s a damn shame.

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker was bad and the whole offense played like they didn’t want to be out there it’s ok it’s just 1 game. I mean every one on this site knew we were not going 17-0 . We can’t act like this after every lost as long as it’s not consistent losing. Baker was bad the o line was bad and we lost move on to the next game!!

  30. MadMax Says:

Its early guys, chill….peyton had his moment of stroking because we’re injured…THEY AINT GONNA DO ISH IN DENVER, TRUST ME!!!

  31. Dave Pear Says:

When everyone on the team sucks, it falls on the head coach.

Accountability will not be taken by Todd, however.

  32. Chad Says:

Once again baker haters are gonna put the sole blame on baker and nothing else, of course they are, baker might’ve been responsible for 2 sack by holding the ball too long, the rest is on that sorry offensive line performance. Bo had all day to throw, no pressure what so ever, baker didn’t, on top of that receivers couldn’t separation, Godwin had a drop, Mike had a drop, baker’s interception was just a poor decision throw, everyone has to be better

  33. Nybucsfan Says:

This is why I never get to high on Baker he will lay a few eggs a year.

  34. Esteban85 Says:

No excuses. These men get paid 10-20X more than us mere peons to play a Fu*king game and they can’t get fired up and come out flat with a chance to be the leaders in the NFC? Damn shameful

  35. IrishTony Says:

Great point DAVE PEAR (my first favorite Buc player in 1976)!!

  36. John Mason Says:

Film will show the Buc’s played their worse game in 3 years….Every phase of the game sucked….Payton totally out coached Bowels….our Back-up players are not ready for prime time…..any injuries and we are sunk!

  37. Marky Mark Says:

With Dalton the panthers are not an easy W

  38. JD Still Says:

Win some, learn some! The sky has not fallen , We are not as bad as it seems everybody now thinks We are, nor were We as good as everybody seems to have thought We were just two days ago,( there goes our undefeated season ,but everything else is still in play), We have played three games ! It’s a long season! We still have the same players we had against Detroit , injuries will heal, and we can see what has to change , ( good teams learn from their mistakes and correct them , bad teams roll over and quit ), I think We have a good team. Win some learn some!

  39. Allen Lofton Says:

Falling flat in the first quarter is not acceptable to continue playing the rest of the game that way.

The ass kicking was deserved. If that’s the Bucs response, then they are not contenders.

There high ranking is over. If you want to get over the sugar high, try planning on playing like your hair is on fire.

  40. Chief Says:

Injuries are the biggest reason for this loss. Coming out flat is a close 2nd.
Wouldn’t matter if it was Brady or Baker back there yesterday, the line was getting pushed back on every pass play. Skule is a fighter, but he is a practice squad player at best.

The lack of scheme to get Mike the ball is concerning. Also, Rachaad should only be in as a receiving back. He gets about 0.2 yards a carry and goes down at first contact.

  41. BucsfaninOregon Says:

“My theory is that is HEIGHT is causing some problems.”… Trask to the Dumpster

Does it occur to you that the receivers were “constantly” covered. Very few wide open. And with a DL in your face “constantly” it’s a little tough. Baker had problems all right, it was trying to throw over the opposing DL.

Here is my theory..The Bucs are not as good as we had thought (hoped) they are. A starter goes down and there is no one (Shule) to replace him that is remotely competent. When you get rolled by a rookie QB and a team with little expectations that is a tough pill to swallow. I’m afraid this year’s team is “regressing to the mean”. That means we are middle of the pack. Bad prescription for the playoffs.
