Albert Breer: America Better Begin Appreciating The Bucs

September 9th, 2024

Tristan Wirfs clears a path for Chris Godwin to get some YAC in the Bucs’ win over Washington Sunday.

Just win, Baby.

While that may have been Al Davis’ life mission, the Bucs have embraced it.

In a league full of pretty quarterbacks, all the Bucs have done the past few years in the post-Bucco Bruce Arians era is play decent defense, efficient offense and win.

No style points. No glitz. No glamour. Just win… division titles.

When it comes to the national #NFLMedia, it feels like the entire lot fell to its knees and began slurping Kirk Cousins. Of all quarterbacks. The man best known for rarely winning big games or primetime games.

Meanwhile, all the Bucs do is win. They even rescued a guy whose face so many of those national #NFLMedia types seemed eagle to shovel dirt in, Baker Mayfield.

There were five huge names in the national #NFLMedia who didn’t jump on the Atlanta bandwagon. Mike Florio of NBC and ProFootballTalk.com picked the Bucs to get to the NFC Championship game. SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Pat Kirwan, their biggest voice, had the Bucs winning the NFC South. Dan Graziano of BSPN, while he didn’t fully endorse a Bucs four-peat, thought folks would be foolish to jump on the Atlanta bandwagon and ignore the Bucs.

Two others were firmly calling for a Bucs four-peat were prickly Pete Prisco of CBS, who was no stranger to One Buc Palace this spring and summer, and Albert Breer of SI.com.

Breer, typing this morning, believes America needs to wake up and start respecting the Bucs.

At some point, we’re going to appreciate the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for what they’ve accomplished the past four years. Until then, they’ll keep winning games like Sunday’s, where they kept the Washington Commanders at an arm’s length for three hours before knocking them out, despite losing their top three guys at corner, which was a question area for them already.

That’s a big thing Joe believes folks are overlooking. The Bucs lost three corners yesterday. That’s in addition to beginning the game with two starting defensive linemen out.

Washington and their prized rookie quarterback could not take advantage of the Bucs, a team so desperate for a warm body in the secondary, it had a guy playing outside corner in Christian Izien who hasn’t played that position since high school.

And the Bucs still won.

That’s the sign of a good team, one that can deal with adversity on the fly, and survive.

Not just won! No wider receiver facing absolutely nothing at CB could managed more then 52 yards and we gave up ZERO passing TDs.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

We played a running QB in his first NFL game. It could have been different had it been a decent team. But it still feels good being 1-0

  3. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

Add Jamie Erdahl of gmfb to your list Joe

    the Bay Beast (Eans)
    Goddy (Godwin)
    Jay Mac (Jalen Macmillan)
Best Trio of receivers in the NFL! Name 3 better
    I dare you!! GO BUCS!!

  5. ModHairKen Says:

It was one game against a rookie QB with a brand new coach and a franchise that is at the bottom of the barrel.

    Irrational exuberance.

  6. Bucsfan Says:

Marcus Banks from our practice squad is a vicious hitter and ready to step up.

  7. Bakerfan Says:

Just remember some of these media guys picked Washington to win. Said Baker plays down, Bowles will not be able to contain an unknown QB, this team did not do enough in off season etc….

We will see, Lions will be a good test

  8. NJbucs23 Says:

Washington is a very bad team. They liked horrible in person. Daniel’s better learn to stay in pocket and read a D or it’s gonna be a short career for him.

I finally saw the Bucs beat crap Washington and didn’t have to go to their crap Washington stadium.

    Go Bucs !

  9. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Mod, one time it would be great if you were not a dooshay

  10. RVATom Says:

    I loved the game!

But it’s going to be different when they play real/mature quarterbacks.

Fingers crossed the injuries aren’t long term. We’ve been so lucky with injuries since Arians. Hate seeing all the luck run out in the same Game.

  11. OHBucFan Says:

Solid team vs. talking heads. When will people learn?
Going to hear a lot this week about the injuries in the secondary and how the Bucs traded their best CB to the Lions. Let’s see how the game is played.

  12. ATLBUC Says:

Evan’s second TD catch made ESPNs top play!

  13. Willow Says:

Who cares what America thinks. our secret

  14. Joemaguire Says:

    Daniels is done.

He can’t slide. He can’t pass. He’s very skinny.

He looked very dumb. And very lost.

I guarantee you he becomes a bust.

    The commanders are cursed.

  15. First Name Greatest Says:

    1-0 feels better than 0-1

Defensive injuries with a already inept defensive scheme is not going to get it done against the better teams but the Bucs play enough bad teams to get to 7 wins.

  16. Mark Says:

What a fantastic photo of Wirfs and Godwin!

  17. Dreambig Says:

I love it! Nice win. Nice to see the media knuckleheads that jumped on the ATL bandwagon take it on the chin. Another team severely disrespected is the Saints. NO finished last year with the same record as the Bucs and has now won 5 out of its last 6 games regular season games, including a thumping of the Bucs when we had a chance to definitively win the division last year. Talking heads writing the Saints obituary were way premature. Its only week one, but I think if we win the division, we are going to have to go through the Aints.

  18. Bojim Says:

Too many of you covering their bases. Rookie QB. First game. Played a lousy team etc. lol

  19. Buc4evr Says:

Great win. How many times have the Bucs lost to a backup or a Rookie QB. This was a trap game the Bucs could have easily lost, but didn’t! Hopefully the secondary can get well for Detroit.

  20. Beeej Says:

As for McLaurin getting shut out, was Dean assigned to him?

  21. BuckyBuc Says:

    Go Bucs

  22. Buddha Says:

Dean is the best cornerback on the team. When healthy. He is legitimate.

  23. Turk182 Says:

I remember being at the game the last time Washington sent a rookie QB at us. And it sucked. We lost to RJ3 on the last drive and the silly Skins fans were chanting his name. Had we lost, it would have resulted in the next coronation of a rookie QB against Tampa. Let some other tema deal with that nonsense. 1-0 feels great and we looked damn good doing it. End of story

  24. Dave Pear Says:

Well done, a win like that in the NFL is awesome. Watch Washington play lights out next week.

Concerned about how thin from injuries we already are in the DB room, going up to face Goff and his weapons. Time for the baptism of Funderburk.

If the Bucs can pull off a win in Detroit with these injuries, sky is the limit.

  25. infomeplease Says:

I saw that Atlanta game, Cousins has not recovered from his injury. The coaches were protecting him by using the pistol formation. He wasn’t under center but a couple of times.

  26. Booger Says:

That’s a ‘nuts’ take there, Jaymaguire… Especially, after just one game. He outplayed EVERY other ‘Rookie-QB’ yesterday, and by a long shot. It wasn’t even close. AND, it was on the road against an aggressive Todd Bowles coached defense to boot in a brand new system with an entirely brand new coaching staff and roster of players. As long as he can remain healthy (&/or) doesn’t find himself stuck inside of an incompetent franchise, he’ll be just fine and have a loooong NFL career. He is supremely uber talented, with great football instincts, & is smart. He can sling-it (&/or) he can run it. He is a dangerous weapon. Again, he’ll be just fine. He is a Rookie. He has played in just ONE game.

  27. Joemaguire Says:

    @mark

    You’re right man.

Its a Hall of Fame photo.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

Amen, @Booger. Daniels is a scary rookie QB. I’ve said it several times on here, but if he stays healthy and gets a good supporting cast, watch out NFC Least! jmaguire was just bloviating. I am glad the Bucs won decisively yesterday, but Daniels is no cupcake. Anywho, on to Motown w/some of the D on IR–typical Buc Luck.

  29. Ed McSherry Says:

C’mon, Dan Orlovsky of ESPN, just last week picked Washington to win the NFC East.

Last year a common “thread- theme” here was about the offense generating enough points. Well, this year so far it looks like points on the board’ll be no problem.

Hello! the Buccaneers scored on practically every time of possession; Camara was getting led cramps waiting to be called-in. What was it? One punt for the game.

Hey, it doesn’t matter how the opposition performs for the Buccaneers to have a great game (note the “Eagles game” in the playoffs).

    Baker was unbelievable!

And there WAS a legitimate run-game. The only reason the run-game didn’t have bigger stats is only because the pass-game was working like magic; good to see McMillan got that second chance (even though Baker dropped it in his pocket); it’s a good sign from Coen that he knows his own players’ abilities (unlike Canales); wow, are the Panthers ever going to be a couple of “free wins.”

When you get the feeling the team even “left a lot on the field (could have scored much more),” uh, no complaints.

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

As much as it pains me to say this, Don’t underestimate the Saints either. Carolina sucks but the Saints beat them out of the stadium on their knees crying. The Saints are not going to be a pushover as long as Carr is healthy. Beating the Saints is all about pass rush pressure and blitzes to get Carr off the spot. The Falcons are the 3’rd best team in the NFC South and the Bucs and Saints are going to slug it out. The corrupt refs may very well be the determining factor.

  31. Saskbucs Says:

That’s the way week 1 needed to go but Washington was like preseason game 4. Those guys are terrible. Steelers on the other hand… if that DL stays healthy this season they are gonna give everyone a handful.

With all our injuries, it’s likely that Detroit mops us up, unless the offense is dialed in and scoring a ton. It’s also likely that Atlanta rebounds and has a better game in Philly. Won’t be easy for them, obviously Philly has a real good DL but they don’t have the Watt game wrecker.

  32. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

That photo is Trey Palmer’s block in the back that erased Godwin’s 14 yard gain.
