“A Lot Of The Looks We Had In Practice Came Up In The Game”

September 10th, 2024

Won the pregame chess match.

Well, here’s another reason the Buccaneers’ offense is steaming with confidence.

It’s not just about a 37-point output without the benefit of the Bucs defense forcing a turnover. Per Mike Evans, the Bucs came to the opening-day test well prepared.

“A lot of the looks we had in practice came up in the game. So you love when that happens,” Evans told the Buccaneers Radio Network.

On Sunday, new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was in his first game as the commander of an NFL offense. He was facing a Commanders team run by Dan Quinn, a defense-first head coach. Based on Evans’ comments, Coen got the best of Quinn and his staff before kickoff.

That’s a very encouraging sign from Coen, who probably needs to squeeze 30 points from his offense again in Detroit on Sunday, if the Bucs want to have a shot at victory.

The Bucs have too many injuries on defense to expect to hold the high-octane Detroit offense to a quiet day.

Bucs gotta put up at least 35 pts to have a shot at winning. Hard to do, but with the weapons the Bucs have it’s not impossible.

Whatever they come up with Hutchinson needs to be accounted for. That guy was all over in the backfield in last year playoff game and it looks like he is picking up where he left off.

Lions had 27 QB Pressures in their 1st game, which is massive and Hutchison had 11 of them.

Offensive plan needs to be a lot of quick hitters and hopefully catch them deep a couple of times when they are creeping up.

More like needing to squeeze 40 out of the offense to have a chance. Goff and his weapons against our 3rd string secondary are going to light it up.

    2 THEMES FOR 2024 …
    1. Coen is a good OC
    2. Canales is a TERRIBLE coach

The question: Is Coen really that good or does following Canales make you look great?

Canales can’t coach his way to the back of the plane.

BTW JOE, you love doing pieces on Atlanta. You talked about Canales all offseason. Why no articles Canales’ greatest-opening-day-loss in Panther’s history?

  5. GJ Says:

Please find a better pic of Coen…lol

  6. Buddha Says:

I completely agree with Joe’s assessment. Canales is a glorified quarterback coach. He’s a good communicator but way too inexperienced to be a head coach. Coen is a workaholic. He will always be prepared. Washington is not a good team but they do have a decent front 7 on defense. Too early to assess, but the offense on Sunday reminded me of the last half of the 2020 season .

HOFamer ME13 was all business on the postgame Bucs Radio show. He said the O did well, but still needed to improve. He had nothing but praise for Coen. Dan Quinn is a Defensive guru? He’s a good one. (no snark.) This was Coen first game as an OC? Wowsers! That explains how serious Evans sounded, and I’m not kidding. Cardiac Bucs have a fighting chance, but O and ST have to bring their A++ game. Period! Lions better not get too full of themselves.

Hutchinson was a game wrecker against the Rams. Slow him down and the Bucs may have a chance.

    50+ points this sunday plz

  11. Buccos Says:

Too bad we let go of that other corner who was playing lights out in preseason. Now we need him

One thing I noticed (I am sure others did as well) was the amount of time we lined up in a certain 3WR, single back set with Godwin in a tight split. So many different versions of motion mechanics out of this formation.

While watching this throughout the game, I felt Washington had to be frustrated seeing the ‘same’ look and not knowing what to expect coming at them (especially with a Dan Quinn defensively-coached team, as Joes have stated).

It was a great plan to give similar looks and keep the defense on edge.

I saw plenty of plays with an additional player open while Baker threw to someone else. Mike Evans was open on several drags/crossers with no compliant as the chosen WR would make the play. Also loved the screen game. How many times were we begging for screens and variations of in the past couple of years?? Getting players in space and letting them go to work seems to be a staple of this new offense. Lots to like so far.

  13. PewterStiffArm Says:

Bottom line, if we get a W in Detroit with this depleted defense, look the hell out. Obviously our offense has to overachieve and our defense has to keep as many plays infront of them as possible.

  14. unbelievable Says:

30? Try 40. Our defense is decimated and Detroit is exponentially better on both sides of the ball than Washington is.
