“You Can Definitely Tell There Is A Winning Culture Here”

August 2nd, 2024

LG Ben Bredeson talks Bucs culture.

You know we are in the middle of training camp when dudes like Joe are typing about culture.

But if you listen to a Michigan Man a winning culture permeates and has seeped through the pores of One Buc Palace. And for him that is invigorating.

Joe was talking with Bucs left guard Ben Bredeson yesterday. Joe has heard a lot about culture and winning of late and Joe wanted an outsider’s view.

Yes, Bredeson said, there is a culture at One Buc Palace. A winning culture.

“You can definitely tell there is a winning culture here when I stepped in,” Bredeson said.

One example Joe has about how professional Bucs players are comes from two rookies: Jalen McMillan and Bucky Irving. McMillan told Joe — the first name out of his mouth — Trey Palmer was taking him under his wing and showing him the ropes of being an NFL player.

With Irving, he said the same about Rachaad White.

If either gets snaps, it will likely take away snaps from the very same guys helping them. This example did not surprise Bredeson.

“I was impressed with the chemistry as soon as I got here in April,” Bredeson said. “I’ve been a big fan of this team [and its professionalism]. I think everybody treats each other with respect and actually cares about one another.

“I don’t think there is a position room in this building that doesn’t apply to.”

Another example of how a culture helps a team is Tristan Wirfs. Tuesday night at practice the Bucs pass rush ran wild if not unimpeded on Bucs quarterbacks.

Yesterday, in the first practice since the night practice, that wasn’t nearly the case. Could it be because Wirfs wasn’t on the field Tuesday but was Thursday? Bredeson wouldn’t disagree.

“He is an incredible player individually,” Bredeson said. “His presence in the huddle is huge. He’s a great leader in the room.

“He’s a friend to all of us. Yeah, I don’t know what it was but he has a great presence in the huddle. It might be rubbing off on everybody.”

Baker Mayfield said in an interview on NFL Network on Tuesday that when the Bucs lost six of seven games midway through last season, what pulled the team through was that “a winning culture was already here.”

Maybe culture does mean something. Joe would still rather take production over culture. Production directly leads to winning. And whatever cultural issue there is, winning is the greatest perfume.

Amazing to see how far we’ve come from the lost decade

  2. ATLBuc Says:

I think the culture began to change with the arrival of Vincent Jackson, David and Evans

Is chip Kelly there with his culture beats talent bs ?

    Go Bucs !

Tom Brady put it over the top.

Giants played this kid at OG, C, and lined him up as an inline-TE as a 6th man.

  6. KABucs Says:

    Giants = losing culture?
1 winning season in last 7… 6 max wins in those losing seasons.

Bucs fans know the feeling… and it sucks.

TB12 top blasted the locker room culture

  8. HC Grover Says:

Let the games begin…anything but the lypics.

  9. Citrus County Says:

If the Saints are tagged with the “Aints”
If the Panthers are tagged with the “Kitty Kats” (Does Joe get credit for that?)
Then I’m tagging the Falcons the “Pigeons”.

Pigeons are dirty birds and I have many memories of pigeons in the parking lots of the Varsity and Yellow Jacket (famous Atlanta drive ins) feasting on french fries. I think it is a befitting insult.

  10. Dude Says:

Ya’ll are giving Brady Bruce Arians’ credit lol there’s a handful of players who said Brady didn’t even address the team with a speech until SB LV.

The moment BA said “With another quarterback? If we can win with this one, we can win with another one, too” was a clear sign that mediocrity was no longer being tolerated(thank goodness). W/o that, we don’t go looking for a FA QB. Not to mention our defense started turning the corner away from the days of Mike Smith calling his speed bump defense or even with the 30 picks our offense STILL finished 3rd in scoring. Just remember something(s) were going on with this team to even make it look attractive to TB12.

  11. BA’s Red Pen Says:

What I hear from all the talk of culture is “Devin White was a clown and everyone is better off with him gone.”

  12. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Injuries piling up.

  13. D-Rok Says:

A winning culture produces production which produces wins.

There, fixed it for ya, Joe. 🙂

TB 12 influence on this organization cannot be understated ! Been here since 1976. There are people that find reasons to not like him /dent his armour. But he is an organization elevator , as best as there has ever been.

  15. chark Says:

    TB12 influence cannot be overstated.

  16. Dean Bucs fan for life!!! Says:

Major kudos to Malcolm Glazer RIP, and the Glazer family!!! Their vision and foundation of building a “Winning Culture” in Tampa Bay began with their purchase of the franchise in 1995, and the hiring of future HOF coach Tony Dungy! Major credit to the previous regime for drafting future Cornerstone HOF’s John Lynch, Warren Sapp, and Derrick Brooks! Tony Dungy and his staff instilled this “Winning Culture” from day one; and as Warren Sapp so eloquently states: “Built the Taj Mahal right in front of our eyes!” The Glazers have allocated every available resource for our beloved Buccaneers to reach the pinnacle of success! Building “One Buc Palace” and bringing in the best people to continue growing this “Winning Culture” moving into the future! Continuity and Consistency are what the Glazers are all about! Let’s not forget the fortunate hiring, and sustained success of Jason Licht, and his staff! They have created a model of success that should be recognized and appreciated! Two Lombardi’s and counting……. Go Bucs!!!!!

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

    Great post, Dean Bucs!

Watched the press conference with Bredeson.
Big boy! Great attitude. He could (🤞🏼) turn out to be the missing link on the IOL, along with Barton.

Still waiting/wanting to hear Klein is looking the part of an NFL lineman.

Very proud of our vets for welcoming and supporting the rookies, even those they’re competing against. Shows true character.

Can’t wait to see some of these guys in the preseason.

  19. Goldenbuc Says:

I agree with Dude. Bruce changed the culture, no dig at GMAC, but when you let a perennial leader walk. Sign his replacement and give him his number.

Its like wiping the chalk off the board and saying “that’s not right”

We were good the first year if not for Jamies set backs.

  20. heyjude Says:

Agree with DeanBucs and others. Yes, the owner change to the Glazers was great, a huge turning point. However, there were some bumps.

I never agreed with the way Tony Dungy was let go. He took over the Bucs in 1996 and we hadn’t seen a winning season in years. Over his time, he produced 35 pro bowl players. The owners thought they were going to get Parsells, until he said no at the last minute. In walked Jon Gruden. My understanding is that McKay did try to talk the Glazers into keeping Tony at the time. Tony Dungy had been part of that positive change when he came on board the ship. Players respected and loved him on the Bucs and the Colts too. Still do.

Mike Evans, Tom Brady, and so many other players changed the culture along with Jason Licht, BA, and Todd Bowles. They all had their hands in the change. It is evolving right now again too. The vibe is there. Go Bucs!

  21. unbelievable Says:

It started with Bruce, and then expanded greatly when Brady came and taught the team how to prepare day in and day out like a champion. Now obviously a little of that came undone in his last season here, but those lessons were still learned, and guys like David, Evans, Godwin, Wirfs etc carried it on. Then Baker came in with the chip on his shoulder and a different kind of energy and belief that meshed well with what was already going here. And him ingraining himself with both offense and defense allowed the culture to keep building to what we see today. We’ve got the champion mindset / preparation from Brady combined with the underdog attitude of Mayfield / the Bucs constant national disrespect, and it seems to be a great mix for this team.

Lets hope it does turn into more production this season.
