“We’ll See How Good He’ll Be This Year”

August 6th, 2024

Calijah Kancey, the next Geno Atkins?

Vita Vea became much more of a pass rushing force in his second NFL season.

Yeah, it was 2019 and his first year with Todd Bowles and he had better players around him. Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett exploding for 19 1/2 sacks comes to mind.

But Joe’s listened to Vea on the Green Light podcast and knows Vea believes his second-year growth was more about learning the game and his body.

Per his chatter after practice today, Vea seems to think the same sophomore growth is in full swing for Bucs second-year defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, their first-round pick in 2023.

Vea said Kancey “always had the talent” and Vea sees big growth in Kancey’s knowledge of the game.

“I think we’ll see how good he’ll be this year,” Vea said.

Joe’s expecting big things.

Joe also found it interesting that six-time Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said (also on Green Light) that Kancey should not be compared to Aaron Donald because Kancey is thicker and bigger. McCoy also said Kancey is no McCoy and is more like Geno Atkins, the eight-time Bengals Pro Bowler.

McCoy worked with Kancey this summer at One Buc Palace.

with Yaya hopefully back by week 1 and JTS hopefully not, I’m thinking the defensive front may be a little better than people are thinking

  2. ReeeBarrr Says:

    Awesome!

    I love McCoy

  3. zzbuc Says:

He we good last years, and because of that expectations are really high, but don’t think anybody makes no favors comparing him with Donald Mc Coy or anybody…….

  4. Dave Pear Says:

Awesome that he’s no McCoy. We don’t need another overrated pretender who becomes invisible in 4th quarters and in crunch time.

    Suh.

Also, it’s time for Vita to explode on the scene and dominate like his talent calls for. Time to get the cob out, Vita.

At least with McCoy you got ice cream.

    OMG WTH!!!!

Bucs released their 1st depth chart. HAINSEY is listed as the STARTING CENTER.

While Joe is SO SO SO happy, I just threw up in my mouth. And no, it’s not too early to inject Barton in as a starter. He’s a Center. He needs the reps to perfect his snap.

I’m cancelling my tattoo appointment. The Bucs aren’t winning the SB with a Center that gets pancaked by a 245lbs MLB.

  7. Dave Pear Says:

I’m pretty sure Hainsey gets pancaked by 195 pound DBs but who’s counting. And who among us hasn’t barfed in their mouth and rallied.

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m more concerned with Vita than Kancey. The few notes about Vita don’t seem that positive – Hainsey and Barton have handled him a few times. Maybe Vita lost too much weight/strength?

  9. Bojim Says:

First depth chart means nothing except a starting point for the Bucs and all the other teams in the NFL.

    Geno Atkins-esque

  11. Hodad Says:

Don’t read to much into Sly. Barton will get plenty of work during the preseason, and those joint practices that are coming up. Barton will be ready to go, and starting week one.

  12. drdneast Says:

I’d have kept McCoy s far away from Kancey as possible least McCoy starts teaching him how to apologize to QB’s after hitting them.

  13. drdneast Says:

Would u rather see Barton play the first series or see him go in for an entire half. That I all the depth chart means for the most part.

  14. Bobby Says:

Been saying it since Calijah was drafted. Kancey is going to dominate in this league as long as he stays healthy.
