Unsettling Chase McLaughlin Miss

August 17th, 2024

Kicker Chase McLaughlin

Yes, nearly every key Bucs player sat out tonight’s preseason game in Jacksonville, but one was on the field executing his full-time job.

That was Bucs big-money kicker Chase McLaughlin, last season’s stud free agent signing who earned every nickel of his big new 2024 contract.

McLaughlin missed a long range field goal in last week’s preseason opener, and he nearly missed an extra point. Tonight, McLaughlin answered his shaky 2024 debut with a miss of a 42-yard field goal wide left on his only attempt.

Joe has confidence in McLaughlin, but damn, it feels like something has gotten in his head.

Tampa Bay’s opening day opponent is Washington, which is struggling to find a kicker after a mess at the position last season. Earlier today, Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo, the former Pro Bowler, missed three field goals.

So summer kicking woes aren’t unusual, but McLaughlin’s hiccups sure are unsettling to Joe.

After the game on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Todd Bowles mentioned McLaughlin’s miss and said the Bucs have to get the kicking “straightened out.”

Next Friday’s preseason finale against Miami now holds a lot more importance. McLaughlin needs to shake the funk. Joe hopes the Bucs make sure he gets at least a couple of field goal opportunities.

Kicking was bad. But Trask was Trash.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs gave Chase a huge deal, he’s not going anywhere.

Calm down people, it’s going to be OK.

  3. rrsrqnc Says:

My fault for spending three hours I cannot get back. Nothing to see the whole game

  4. Mike S Says:

Trask showed enough flash for the Baker bois to continue to poopoo him.

Baker gets $100M contract named the starter and still the Baker bois are sweating him.

    LOL

  5. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Baker boys still scared of Trask.

  6. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Lets just hope Chase has been reading the constant “worthless” preseason on JBF…..and he was thinking……”so what if I miss” It’s just a worthless game”

  7. Baking with Evans Says:

I’m not worried about Chase. I’m more worry about Mayfield getting hurt.

    SMH

  8. RagingBrisket Says:

Licht can’t seem to ever find a reliable kicker. Has any team had more starting kickers in the last 10 years than Licht?
Concerning that we might be in another kicker crisis of confidence.

… and I hear that the punter has been having issues too!!

What a disappointment! Our backups were terrible. They acted like they weren’t fighting to be on the team. The whole kicker thing gave me chills. My old Bucs kicker PTSD resurfaced. I thought maybe the Matt Bryant curse was back. Hopefully I can wake up and realize this was all just a bad dream.

What’s funny is last year in the preseason people were complaining about the punting as well – as if Camarda suddenly forgot how to kick.

Just calm down ladies, everything will be OK.

Joe’s mention of Younghoe Koo getting the yips and sshanking 3 kicks led me to do a quick glance at what the ATL fan sites and their posters are saying: many are concerned about their kicker and want competition brought in. The ATL secondary got shredded by Josh Johnson (yeah he is still on a roster). The ATL homers hate that Rah is refusing to play any of his starters for even one series and are puzzled why Penix is not getting reps as Rah said he has seen enough of his first round draft pick. On the positive side, it appears that the ATL has depth at the RB position and Ruke Orhorhoro got a sack. Sound like a meh day for the ATL against DC backups overall.

    Ugh Washington = Baltimore

Nothing calms the nerves like Hairdresser Hot Rod Mulch in mid-season tuff talking form.

Ever since McLaughlin clanged one off the upright vs Detroit in the playoffs…he’s been a bit wobbly. Anytime a kicker goes cold…it’s a concern. They did to him off contract wise…which is all the more troublesome. Hopefully he’ll be fine. I see a lot of tight games this season.

  15. lambchop Says:

Camarda had a solid game. He’s not going to be an issue. Chase has to get his fundamentals back and hopefully he doesn’t get in his head.

  16. Zoocomics Says:

let’s be honest, chase was a bit too accurate last season. His only misses during the regular season were blocked kicks. If he was as good as he was last season for the Colts, he’d still be there and not in Tampa.

I think Chase had an unusually good season, but I don’t think there’s anything to worry about just yet.

  17. heyjude Says:

It’s one preseason game. Could be mental and not mechanics. Not worried yet… Although, I do agree with RagingBrisket. We do seem to have a hard time with kickers.

  18. JimBobBuc Says:

Camarda had a bad game against Cindy and the Bucs brought in another punter. In the Jags scrimmage, Camarda was crushing them and punted better in the game. Maybe bring in another kicker? Let’s hope McLaughlin turns it around.

  19. Badbucs Says:

“Maybe bring in another kicker?” Good grief. It’s preseason. The guy was great last year. Maybe cut him some slack? 50 harder hit the post. Did he miss everything in practice? Patience, please.

You baker nut boys won’t quit bashing Trask will ya? Mayfield gets the starting job and the big contract and yall still scared when Trask has a good performance lmao

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Jason needs to act unilaterally. Now. It’s apparent that the Toadster is believing his own faux-genius claptrap more than ever.

Sign another kicker. Sign another backup QB. Tell Todd to name a full time DC who is willing to invest the tedious effort to correct the pass defense defects, or go back to being a DC and Jason will hire a real head coach.

Of course that’s not gonna happen.

Damn. The Toadster had given me hope for a minute.

Fool me twice, shame on me, Bloweszo.

  22. Brendahadababy Says:

I’m not a Trask hater but, if some of yall are thinking Trask had a “good” performance last night….uffff wow

  23. Dave Pear Says:

The QB on the field for the Bucs in the first half looked eerily similar to Mike Glennon, only more awkward. The attempts to run play action fakes were especially comical, as everyone knew there wasn’t going to be a handoff. Then he looked like he was about to trip over his clumsy feet before dirfing throws off the ground or defenders.

New backup QB needed. Mate Josh Johnson will be released and we could scoop up his 57 year old arse.
