Tristan Wirfs Reacts To New Contract

August 1st, 2024

So Tristan Wirfs became the NFL’s highest paid offensive lineman today and held a news conference with Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht after practice to talk about it.

Some highlights:

*Licht opened the news conference saying the press briefing was delayed because he had to change his shirt as not to wear what Wirfs was wearning (see above).

*Licht says if if anybody deserves to be highest paid in the game — and in franchise history — it’s Wirfs.

*Wirfs means so much to the organization and what the team is trying to build, says Licht, adding Wirfs is a massive piece to the team culture Licht feels is the very best he’s seen since it since Licht arrived in Tampa in 2014.

*Pretty cool. It wasn’t necesarily a goal,” Wirfs said, regarding being highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

*I called her last night and said, ‘We’re damn close, Mom,'” Wirfs said of telling his mother about the new contract. “We did it.” Wirfs added that he went through a lot growing up.

*”I don’t really want to be anywhere else. It’s pretty nice here,” Wirfs said.

*Licht adds that Wirfs, Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and Antoine Winfield, Jr., are among many Bucs that are the kinds of players you want to build a team around. All were re-signed this year, and Licht said he’s definitely leaving out key names.

*Wirfs wants another Super Bowl ring badly: “Gotta do it again.”

This melts my heart hearing about Tristan talking to his mom, “we did it.” Says so much about his character. So happy for him and his family. Go Bucs!

    Congratulations Tristan, you deserve it!

    GO BUCSSSSSS

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Glad it got done… but I’d have gone for 7 or 8 or even 10 years, this dude is going to play into his late 30s and be the best offensive lineman in football for most of that time.

LICHT MAY BE EVEN SMARTER THAN YOU THINK …

This off-season we’ve seen QBs getting paid HUGE dollars. $50M a year. The cap is $255M. Teams are committing 20% to just the QB.

Licht “reset” the market for LT at $28M a year. Once the market value is “reset,” it rarely goes backwards.

What’s a QB worth without a great LT? Nothing. LTs know this and so will their agents. Teams will have to fork over $50M for a QB PLUS $30M for a LT. That’s $80M of $255M; meaning, the rest of the team will be talent starved because teams have less money to spend.

Tampa will have an extra $20M to spend on additional talent other teams will not.

Licht just put the NFL in a stranglehold.

    I thought same Rod

Hey Tristam I think I see a spot of skin that’s not tatted lolol.

    YAY!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  11. No Mercy Says:

I never noticed this before… when you got to NFL.com it says Wirfs signed a contract. Nowhere anywhere does it say he’s the highest paid lineman in the league. If Penai Sewell signed this it would be in bold “HIGHEST PAID OL IN THE LEAGUE” wtf is the discrepancy?

  12. No Mercy Says:

We need more playoff wins …. The disrespectful towards Tampa by media outlets is delusional and must be corrected

  13. No Mercy Says:

Excuse my typo’s I wish I could edit them

  14. Tampamac Says:

@Rod- So Wirfs can renegotiate again in 3-4 years when he’s the 4th or 5th highest paid T in the league. It’s a business. Guys aren’t signing away their leverage these days.

  15. Dude Says:

Licht should’ve offered baby boy Wirfs a futures contract lol that kid was born in April and looks like he’s ready for pre-K…..and lunch or dinner.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

I’m not second guessing the league’s best GM.

Lots of other balls in the air to juggle. Wirfs probably didn’t want a longer contract than that. He can get another bag even bigger theoretically.

  17. Durango 96 Says:

I can guarantee you there is NO WAY Wirfs would have agreed to any deal longer than the one he just signed.. He would have to be an idiot to do anything of a sort. Some of the things you dudes come up with is flat out nuts. Wow.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

I highly doubt Wirfs is turning down a longer term deal with more guaranteed money which already makes him the highest paid offensive lineman in the league. I really like Licht and think he’s done an amazing job, but I disagree with him on this mindset. Licht wants team flexibility over everything, but it costs a decent amount more money to work that way since you’re always having to reset contracts up. Winfield and Wirfs are two future HOF players, those guys you should lock-up for as long as possible.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Rod – JL might have wanted what you want. It takes two. This is the deal they signed and that makes it great. Much better than horsing around and dragging it out.

Great news and a little bit of light humor question, is it me or does wirf look like he can play the live action version of Maui from Moana

“The delay” in getting this deal done was the term. Any talk of Wirfs wanting something longer is absolute insanity.

  22. Drunkinybor Says:

But. But. Thr other day that guys sources daid they were miles apart on a deal. 🐦‍⬛

  23. firethecannons Says:

He needs to give a little chunk to his mother. She raised him and his sister alone. She did a fantastic job.

  24. unbelievable Says:

    Haha BigBucsFan

    Congrats to Mr. Wirfs!

  25. Rod Munch Says:

I love all these guys that ignore all the evidence, then just say, yeah, Wirfs was eager to turn down an extra $50-million guaranteed. Amazing stuff, thanks for sharing your brillant wisdom!

LOL you beat me to it!
Wirfs’ Tat man is ecstatic BTW 🙂

    Go Bucs!

Paul Gruber could only dream of being in the game today.
