Todd Bowles Starting To Worry About Flags

August 5th, 2024

Penalties on his mind.

When at Bucs training camp practices since zebras started showing up, Joe sensed there seemed to be a lot of flags.

Joe dismissed it, believing it was just his imagination. Besides, it is training camp. The season is over a month away.

Apparently, the number of flags thrown wasn’t Joe’s imagination. Who said? Todd Bowles said, that’s who.

Bowles confessed he’s starting to worry about so many flags.

“The penalties are a work in progress,” Bowles said Saturday. “We’ve got to get that taken care of.

“After being in camp for a week, you’ve got to get used to the pads, you’ve got to get used to the heat and then you’ve got to carry out your assignment.

“That’s a work in progress.”

How much “work” is the question? One reason Joe gave a pass on the flags is that the offense (or defense) is not a cohesive unit. You’ve got guys coming in and out all the time at just about every position on just about every play.

Once the Bucs get to the 53-man roster cutdown date, they should know who is in their starting lineups.

With so much going on now each and every play, mistakes are somewhat understandable. That typed, there is zero excuse for illegal procedure. Those flags are simply having your head fully up your backside.

It’d be interesting Joe to see how many of those illegal procedure penalties were on the youngsters trying to make the team versus on the veterans. Plus it is a new offensive system, so I’d expect it’ll take a little while for guys to adjust to the tempo, etc.

Can’t remember how long ago they started having the zebras out there at all practices, but that’s been a great addition I’m sure.

Great idea having the zebras at camp. If Coach Bowles is worried, he must have good reasons. Agree with DR too. It could be mostly from the newbies trying to make the team. They will learn it. If not, they may not make the 53-man roster this month.

1st vs 32nd MOST PENALIZED TEAM IN THE NFL

The worst penalized team = The Jets (124)
The least penalized team = The Raiders (75)
    Penalties by 49ers = 101
    Penalties by Bucs = 100
    Penalties by Chiefs = 96

Good to bring attention to penalties but not an indicator of success/failure.

Looking at this past regular season, and accounting for snap counts, the worst penalty guys were Goedeke, JTS, Zyon, and Izien. These guys need to step up and stop beating the team.

If Coen is calling in 2 or 3 plays per snap, this will stress Bake and the rest of the offense. Coen needs to get the plays called in quickly. Is Bake wearing a wrist band? The one practice I went to, I didn’t notice any audibles. Joe – do you see audibles?

With the new kickoff rule and with the hip tackling rule there will be even more flags. The refs now have even more control over who wins games.

Very true! And there are other new rules too. So much control. I do remember reading on here about Goodell saying they wanted to use more technology. It is going to be interesting.

You know I’m more worried about all 32 NFL stadiums implementing facial recognition software to monitor the attendees. Feels Orwellian.

None of our vets should be having holding flags, especially
on our secondary defense in the endzone…and eyes up
for the ball , don’t simply allow the catch and then tackle
allowing 5 more yards…that’s why “tweeZ” has so much
success …he “knows” where that ball is headed…when that
ball leaves the qb…he’s “gone “…he doesn’t allow the catch
    …at all !!!

Face recognition is Orwellian. Maybe fans should be making noise about this. If it is the safety of crowds the league should tell the public so and how so.
