Todd Bowles Now Says Bucs Are (Mentally) Tough

August 16th, 2024

Praises team 24 hours later.

After the first of two joint practices with the Jags in Jacksonville this week, Todd Bowles groused about how his team needed to toughen up.

Bowles was discussing too many dropped passes for his liking and believed the Bucs needed more reps to get over sloppy play.

“That’s what I’m talking about [in terms of] getting more reps and being mentally and physically tougher for opening day,” Bowles said.

Well, it seems the mental plateau was reached in 24 hours. After yesterday’s practice, Bowles lauded his team for not mentally breaking down and staying focused on the task at hand after committing too many errors on Wednesday.

“They’re mentally tough,” Bowles said of the Bucs, quite a 180 turn from the previous day. “[Wednesday] was a hot day and they took a lot of plays.

“[Thursday], they came back out mentally understanding what they have to do – we just have to execute.

“They all stood together, they all came out ready to work. We’re getting ready for the grind of the season.”

Well, Joe is glad the Bucs got the mental part down. As far them being physically tougher while having a soft underwear football practice? Joe doesn’t know if it’s good or bad. So many teams operate differently in August to prepare for the regular season, so there doesn’t appear to be a right way or a wrong way of getting guys ready and healthy for Week 1.

Joe sure thinks Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin might be onto something when he said about tough practices in training camp, “If you are going to box, you have to spar.”

Bowles used to say the same thing but changed his tune.

Mike Tomlin … “If you are going to box, you have to spar.”

Yea verily! Zero losing seasons in 18 years as an NFL head coach kinda tells ya he’s doing something right.

  2. Lt. Dan Says:

I get what Coach Bowles is saying. It’s like playing golf. “The last hole was a disaster. But it’s over and I’m on the next hole now. Focus”

  3. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Yes, but about zero playoff wins in the last decade tells ya he may not be keeping up

  4. orlbucfan Says:

Bucs looked pretty poised last Saturday night. Granted, it’s rookies and preseason. Drunk BF makes a good point: Steelers haven’t advanced in the playoffs in years. Our Bucs have. Go Bucs!!

  5. Kenton Smith Says:

Coach also said “We’re getting ready for the grind of the season “. It is like playing golf. Wouldn’t it be great when you miss a 3 ft. putt if you could tackle somebody!

  6. Usedtocould Says:

He won a playoff game last year

I have a lot of respect for Coaches Mike Tomlin and Todd Bowles. One says sparring the other says mentally tough. In the end, they both run together.

  8. Kenton Smith Says:

When my golfing buddies and I play people say “ You must have alot of money riding on this .” We all say “This is way more important than money.” I truly believe that is exactly the way this football team feels.

It really is a roll of the dice no matter what you do. I hold my breath all preseason not to hear the term “carted off”. But we lost an all pro center just because someone fell on him

  10. PSL Bob Says:

Andy Reid is another one that believes the only way you’re going to be ready for the season is to have your starters train tough and play in preseason games. The Chiefs seem to do ok with that philosophy. But, can you imagine if Mahomes was injured in a “worthless” preseason game? Bottom line, it’s an odds game – more likely to be injured playing in 20 games than in 17.

  11. Jp3 Says:

Remember we practice in the heat and humidity of Tampa, FL.

  12. KABucs Says:

Does Mahomes even playing any preseason games? I can’t say I really pay attention to Kansas City’s preseason. If I was Andy, I wouldn’t risk it. He’s is the best QB in the league but how much of that is being in the same system under the same coach and signal caller since day 1 for 7 years? 7 YEARS!!! I’m not trying to take away from Mahomes skill as a QB, he’s the mans, but how many other QBs in the league have been in that situation? Definitely not Baker and I doubt too many other QBs can say they’ve had the same offensive system and play caller for that many years in a row. Lucky for him & a ridiculous amount of consistency.

TBBF is mentally tough but can still get his a$$ beat by someone physically tougher…

  14. SenileSenior Says:

Will our team be mentally tough after they have run the gauntlet of the first ten games? Will we come out on top? What if we don’t? Will we sustain a high level of mental toughness? Would we still make it to the playoffs?

It is a long season. Will our fans be mentally tough also? Stay tuned.

  15. Jeffrey Becker Says:

the guys dropping passes were the guys that have had the most reps, so….

  16. Jeffrey Becker Says:

we’ll have to be tough when we’re trailing the saints by 2 games at the midpoint of the season. their sked is way better than ours or the falcons first half of the year. what’s the money line on the saints winning the division?

  17. Dave Pear Says:

OK. Todd says need to be tougher and then <> he says they are.

    Tomlin >>>>> Todd. No comparison.

  18. Show Me the TDs Says:

What does KC do? Do that.

  19. 2 thumbs up Says:

Steelers have been to the post season 7 years in the last 10 winning 3 playoff games.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

    Already very fatigued with Toddspeak.

Six weeks from now it will be in the 70’s with moderate humidity in the northeast, our guys will be in the 90’s for 2 1/2 more months in a constant state of near dehydration. (That’s why we historically start slow regardless of staff)
