Todd Bowles Gets Prestigious Assignment

August 31st, 2024

NFL heavy hitter now.

Yeah, Joe knows there is a scattering of Bucs fans who grumble that Todd Bowles is their head coach. But as a sign of how much respect Bowles has in league circles, he was given one of the highest acts of responsibility that an NFL coach can have.

In fact, Bowles will have a say in the direct future of how the great NFL game will be played. Bowles was selected to serve on the NFL Competition Committee, a rare honor.

Whenever there is a potential rule change, it must first be presented before the competition committee. If the competition committee, comprised of coaches, suits and owners, passes a piece of proposed legislation, it is then sent to the owners who vote on the measure as a group.

Bowles joins this committee co-chaired by former Bucs general manager Rich McKay. Others on the committee include Bengals vice president Katie Blackburn, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, Giants co-owner John Mara, Bills head coach Sean McDermott, Rams head coach Sean McVay and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the competition committee focuses on “playing rules, roster regulations, technology, game-day operations and player protection.”

Unlike the other coaches on the committee, Bowles brings unique insight as he played in the league for eight seasons and won a ring with Washington in 1987.

Joe thinks it is way cool that a member of the Bucs will have his voice directly heard into how the league plans to shape the game of football.

    Congrats Coach.

  2. BA’s Red Pen Says:

That’s a great honor. Why did he zero blitz Stafford?

  3. Knothead71 Says:

I think coach Bowles needs to focus on getting the Bucs ready to play football. I have the utmost respect for him as a man and as a mentor to younger guys.
But if we’re honest with each other, he makes some in game bone head moves.
Get this team ready to defeat the other 31 teams in the NFL and then dance around like a bunch of Kansas City fa…..well ya’ll know what I mean

  5. OR Buc Says:

Why was Winnfield out of position? We all make mistakes.

  6. Mike Says:

Shut up knothead71 I guess that’s why your name is knothead that’s exactly what you are bowles can be on the committee and still get his football team ready 🙄 lol

  7. OR Buc Says:

We have been a playoff team for 4 straight years. Winning a championship, 3 time South champs and most recently winning a playoff game, with 70-80 million in dead cap space and now looking like we are ready to grow even more. Quit B*tchin about Bowles. Glad he’s on the committee, cause he knows his stuff.

  8. Bucs And Them Says:

BA’s Red Pen…..I just shot Mt. Dew out my eyes. Hands down, Ex-Lax ‘Post Of The Week!’

  9. Crickett Baker Says:

I thought Lynch was on that committee, too. hmm..Big congrats, Coach. Help make the game stay great!

  10. Booger Says:

If THAT seriously made you all ‘wet’ after reading that dumb post, “Bucs And Them” – then, you really need to get a life. I mean, what’s so damm great, funny, (&/or) ingenious about it!?:/ Please. Absolutely NOTHING clever, new, or insightful about it… Plus, it’s really just ‘Clownish’ and serves no purpose. Has nothing to do with anything.

    Good for Coach Bowles!

Hopefully, the committee can look at the kickoff rule again that they came up with and the owners approved. It doesn’t seem to be working.

  12. Larrd Says:

He could get the committee to allow head coaches one lifeline call from the sidelines, maybe.

  13. Gipper Says:

Bowles is thoughtful and no doubt has impressed the NFL with his steadiness. Most importantly he has the attention and respect of his players. Notice he does this without snarling at the press or acting like a jerk like many in his profession.

LMAO There are guys here blowing big chunks over breakfast! Poor Rod!!!

He’s far from the only one here who have a hate Bowles fetish. Personally I’ve alway been a big fan of Bowles as a human, man, and coach. I dislike defensive first football. D.R. and I joke with each other because I love Offense he’s a defensive guy.

From “our era” I certainly concede D.R. is correct defense rules. The Steel Curtain has a place in football history…Don Coryell and Dan Fouts are loved primarily by guys like me. This is why I also Loved BA.

But there is more than one way to win and Bowles has won me over despite a couple of boneheaded time management moves and his sometimes uber conservative approach. We all have an are entitled to our own opinions, I’ve never been big though on alternative facts.

FACTS: This story! Bowles is obviously respected by the league.

Before the Bucs folks love to point out Bowles struggles as HC of the Jets with ZERO perspective! In the past 16 years the Jets have had ONE 10 win season.
1 out of 16 and guess who it was? Bowles! He finally succumbed to the Jets crappy management and it’s not just Bowles…since his 10 win season the Jets have yet to have another winning season.

The sh*t show after the SB, not that uncommon for SB winners, remember Gruden’s team and many others. As far as last season, I agree with somebody who knows a little about the situation, BA!

“I think fantastic, the way he weathered through the storms this year and kept that team together,” Arians said of the job Bowles has done. “New quarterback, new system, new play-callers, it takes time. He kept it going. Winning the division, being the only NFC team that’s been in the playoffs for four straight years, that’s pretty strong.”

Before Rod and #TeamNegative hit with what do we expect, Todd was BAs guy…
BA was not going to trash Bowles, I get that. But he also didn’t have to praise him or point out the reasons why he thinks Todd did a job.

Todd won a SB as a player with the Skins, a coach as DC of the Bucs, winning one as an HC is his final challenge. I’m rooting for him to do it.

I finish with some clickbait. IF Todd Bowles somehow wins an SB with the Bucs he’s a lock for the HOF. Winning as a player, coordinator, and HC is just strong!

  17. PSL Bob Says:

Very cool! Glad he gets the recognition.

  18. Allen Lofton Says:

Says a lot about the Bucs organization. Interesting this committee has several representatives from the Buccaneer tree.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is one of the best humans in the game, no question about that. This assignment is right up his alley. That committee under corporate stooge McCay needs insight and integrity, along with common sense. Good for Todd.

In 8 days we’ll know whether or not he has evolved as a head coach.

  20. Bucs And Them Says:

Lighten up Francis, I mean Booger. I think Todd Bowles has done a good job overall given the circumstances since he took over. And he’s very deserving of his selection to the committee. If you don’t see the humor in BA’s quip and delivery well, I can’t help ya. “Hey! You kids get off my lawn!”……Don’t be that guy. Go Bucs!!!!

  21. SenileSenior Says:

I think the title of this post says it all.

    Congratulations, Mr. Bowles.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Let Bowles prove he is worthy…or not.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Can’t wait for him to present a proposal to ban the forward pass.

  24. orlbucfan Says:

Congratulations, Coach. I have always been in your corner unlike a few of the bloviating yahoos on here. Mike Tomlin, huh? Guess where he cut his teeth as an assistant–yuck, yuck. I doubt this will happen, but the new kickoff format SUCKS as well as STINKS! Oh well.
