Sterling Shepard Returns; Chase Edmonds Out For Season

August 28th, 2024

So the Bucs added inexpensive insurance and veteran leadership late yesterday.

Seventh-year running back Chase Edmonds was placed on the season-ending version of injured reserve with a bad knee. So the Bucs will pay him and, presumably, Edmonds will hang around the team in meetings and a mentorship role.

The Bucs’ young running backs corps has had a lot of praise for Edmonds and his eagerness to help others and be a team-first guy.

Edmonds had 49 carries for 176 yards last season with 14 receptions.

Sterling Shepard, the 31-year-old receiver who was considering retirement this summer before his good buddy Baker Mayfield called him, was having a good training camp but got injured. The Bucs didn’t disclose his actual issue and cut him yesterday. But Todd Bowles made it clear he hoped and wanted Shepard to stick around.

“Hopefully, we can get him back in some capacity because when he was fresh and he was good, he made a lot of plays,” Bowles said of Shepard.

Bowles got his wish and Shepard opted for about $20,000 per week to be on the Bucs’ practice squad rather than calling it quits.

Basically they’re paying Edmunds and Shepherd as coaches.

  2. 321BucFan Says:

Bring back WR #83 Cody Thompson!

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

I’m sure there will be a couple more roster moves

I am elated for Shepard and he was more than happy to take the 20k per week. That says so much. There is chemistry there and he did well with Trask and Baker according to the training camp notes. It doesn’t hurt anything to give him a chance.

    Good news all around.

Chase Edmonds mentorship. Yes, I can see it now …

“Tucker, Tucker, Tucker. No, you don’t go with them. We’re over here on game day. Follow me. This is end of the bench where we sit. In fact, that spot right there is all yours! Those permanent butt cheek imprints have been created by me, Rojo, Earnest Graham, Bobby Rainey, Peyton Barber, and more. Now, it’s all yours!”

“The fastest exit to the player parking lot is over here.”

“Carry an extra sharpie. In case Evans or Baker need to sign a few extra signatures and their pen dies. I hate seeing the kids disappointed.”

“Don’t always rush in at half time. Sometimes the entertainment is pretty good.”

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Agreed 321BucFan, hopefully they can sign Thompson to the practice squad. The guy balled out in the preseason games.

That’s why we have the most honorable franchise in the NFL. The best locker room culture in the nation.

We have a culture in Tampa Bay that I can be proud of.

    The team philosophy? “F.A.M.I.L.Y.”

“Forget About Me. I Love You.”

    It’s deep. It’s divine. It’s Jesus-esque.

    Go Bucs!

And thanks to Licht again for being a wise GM.

    Family!

Wow this one shocks me a bit. Those PS spots are like gold. Usually not used on old guys. More for developing players. I was looking for Miller and or Thompson to get a spot…Wow!

    Go Bucs!

  10. rrsrq Says:

We do know that Thompson is no rookie, he balled out and may be good for the PS, but Shep brings the experience and in an injury crunch, fingers crossed, Shep know Baker

  11. Dave Pear Says:

Sly – you made me spew coffee. Thank you, that was good.

  12. Crickett Baker Says:

I was right! Canals just snatched Keenan Isaac. He is really honking me off.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Shepard isn’t bad to have around on the PS. I certainly wouldn’t count on him to be healthy all the time, but if something should happen and you had to play him, he’s a guy that could be a legit #3, perhaps even a #2 if needed, at least for a week or two.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

You guys calling for 28-year old Cody Thompson, who has 6-years experience in the NFL with 1 catch, calling for him to make the team because he was better than the other teams 4th stringers, you literally have no idea what you’re watching. I mean literally.

…….just added QB Michael Pratt from Tulane to the practice squad

Every NFL team plays players every year who contribute very little or nothing in the field. Edmunds and Shepherd are making chump change in NFL terms.

  17. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

    Cody Thompson please

It’s always amazing to me how lightly the Bucs seem to take practice squad QBs. But, briefly, watching his highlights and reading some scouting reports, this seems like a very solid caliber player for the practice squad. I was a bit worried by some of his throws, that he might lack an NFL arm as he was throwing cupcake rainbow passes that were hanging – however, as I went on in the video, he was firing in some throws including long passes with good velocity.

The NFL scouting report on him had him as a 4th round pick caliber player, and he went in the 7th round to the Packers.

Seems like a very solid signing. Obviously it’s very unlikely anything comes of the pick, but I like that he’s a legit NFL prospect and not those normal weak armed guys the Bucs tend to waste spots on, who have no chance to ever play in the NFL (looking at you goat farmer of Hard Knocks fame).

Bucs were going to pick Pratt if the Packers hadn’t….per several reports

    HeyJude

Agree with your observation about Shepard staying for the “chump change”.

And this is not directed at you or anybody it’s just my communist rant. LOL

It’s sad to me when $20,000 a WEEK is chump change but that’s major league sports right now. Name a sport where 20,000 a week is considered a good salary.

Now name 3 of your friends who would work for half that or even less.

  21. Cleanhouse Says:

    Sly- nice 😂

  22. Badbucs Says:

Agree Rod. Cody’s been banging around for years on practice squads never cracking a lineup. Take a wild shot at somebody with upside. Even Toney would be better than this guy.

  23. David Says:

20k a week sounds like a great gig if you can get it!

  24. Scott Anthony Clarke Says:

I think the move to bring Pratt was good, with Wolford Injury, and the need to develop at QB with Kyle may test the free agent waters it is wise to bring a mobile accurate rookie in wi6h a good arm. I think we need to keep our eyes open for a vet with some experience for the running backs as with our backs have the talent, and upside yet to have a vet on the practice squad could help in a pinch. As for DB insurance we need to look at what Buffalo has or New Orleans being with there unusual schemes. Finally with his preseason I would help Tood would consider bringing bsck Ryan Miller he showed flashes of Scott Miller or Julien Edlemen!
