“Running Game’s Going To Be Drastically Better Than It Was”

August 19th, 2024

Rookie running back Bucky Irving.

It’s been about five weeks since Baker Mayfield dropped what may have been the Bucs quote of the summer.

“We were so bad running the ball last year,” Mayfield told Pardon My Take.

That’s not a typical thing to hear from a franchise quarterback when most of the offensive line and the running backs are returning for 2024.

Still, Mayfield said it, and Joe cannot argue. In fact, Mayfield was snickering about the running game today on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“Within the system that Liam’s brought in, running game’s gonna (laughs) drastically be better than it was,” Mayfield said, noting how “the versatility” of new offensive coordianator Liam Coen’s system is what he’s most excited about this season.

Mayfield added that teams will struggle to figure out how to cover the Bucs offense, which has a tremendous standard “set long before I was here.”

That’s not a shot at the players. That’s a shot at the ex OC, Canales.

  2. LetsBucs Says:

Could e a shot at Harold Goodwin (Ex-Running Game Coordinator) and Joe Gilbert (Ex-Offensive Line Coach) as well. Panthers basically took on our entire running game (bar the players and running backs coach).

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If our running game is good, our offense will be outstanding…

  4. Goldenbuc Says:

What players will Carolina poach after roster cuts? is my biggest question at the moment

  5. Greg Says:

It’s the thing I’m most excited about after watching two preseason games. The running looks strong, and the o-line looks deep and stout! If we have a league average running game we’re going to be a very tough team to beat.

Moreso, Todd (whatever we may think of him as a coach) has proved, that if the offense can give us over 23 a game the defense WILL keep most teams below that.

Moreso, if Todd get’s an offense that can score over 23 and run the ball to eat up clock, then he’s finally gotten his dream scenario.

    Fingers crossed!

I was watching Carolina and the Jets today. First play on offense for Carolina was a run up the middle for a 1 yard loss. Next play was a run off tackle that gained three but was called back for holding. Next was a short pass, draw, then punt. Yeah laughs Baker the run game should be better.

And The Lunatic Tepper hired Canalwater to be his head coach!

    LOL!

Hahaha. Gotta admit that one made me laugh.

  9. JimBobBuc Says:

Good of Baker not throwing anybody under the bus. We know there’s lots of hands in the toilet for last year’s run game.

  10. DCone Says:

Did I not see a run up the gut for a 5 yard loss in a first and goal from the 1 just last weekend?
Talk is just that. First I will have to see how much ‘better’ the offense will be under an OC with two years calling plays in college snd one calling McVays plays on the NFL level. Kentucky to the Rams and back to Kentucky because you don’t get asked back for a second season at the Rams? Red Flag.

Second I will have to see how Mayfield performs without a wet nurse. I see how another rebranded back QB did in Seattle the year after he lost his.

  11. HC Grover Says:

    Remains to be seen.

  12. adam from ny Says:

the running game is going to be much improved this year…and a whole lot will get blamed on dishonorable davey cantalones

  13. infomeplease Says:

This team should now be able to do what they failed so miserably at the past two seasons… Extend drives, dominate time of possession, and then score! If you can get time consuming drives resulting in scores (preferably TDs), especially when playing the better teams. You can limit their ability to keep up score wise. That’s what I believe this new offense will do.
Now it’s up to the defense to do their part! Get off the field on third and forth down! Not like the Saturday night game we just played. Hopefully the starters are more effective. I’m hopeful!

  14. infomeplease Says:

It’s about getting ahead on down and distance. That’s something the Bucs could not do so well last year.

  15. Hodad Says:

Adding Barton to lead the attack is going to make everything work better. We should be hard to deal with up front.

“Kentucky to the Rams and back to Kentucky because you don’t get asked back for a second season at the Rams? Red Flag.”

He returned to KY because he wanted to call plays and McVay wasn’t going to let him in his system…..had nothing to do with being asked back or not

  17. NJbucs23 Says:

Canales was not a good OC. And watch how hard of a time he will have as a HC. His offense will not be good, guaranteed

  18. CleanHouse Says:

Dave Pear, wiat till Tepper throws a drink in his face!

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Hahaha CleanHouse – to quote James Bond, “that would be a waste of good scotch.”

He literally took the worst QB in football from 21-22, and got them a $100m deal*.

These morons that have no idea what they’re watching truly give some awful takes.

  21. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I do hope Bucky Irving is the second coming of Warwick Dunn. Or better yet, Emmit smith. A man can dream, can’t he?

  22. Brandon Says:

Rod… you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s more like Baker and the rest of the skill players for the offense played well enough that they helped an offensive coordinator that was so far over his head that he had no idea what he’s doing, and they got him a head coaching job. This is a big win-win for the team, they are greatly improved because almost anybody would be a better offensive coordinator, because now Carolina hired him as their head coach.

  23. BucU Says:

Stop picking on Canales. I’m very confident his new team can average at least 13 points a game. After all they scored their first TD in their last 4 games Sat night.

  24. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@Rod: “He literally took the worst QB in football from 21-22, and got them a $100m deal*.”
    ___________________________________________

Disagree with you big time on that one Rod. First, 21-22 is by far not the worst QB in football. To be fair, the argument could go either way. One could say Canales held Baker and Co back with his conservative 1st and 2nd down play calling and Baker-Evans-Godwin bailed him out many times on 3rd and long.

It will be very interesting to me how Canales does in his 1st year as a HC. He may end up great, I do not think he is ready for that role.

  25. ATLBUC Says:

I didn’t realize it at first but I want to thank the Panthers for taking Canales, Godwin and Gilbert! All 3 were responsible for the worst performing units on the team.
Now, we can see that the running game is better, the offense line is better and the play calling is better
