Rookie Free Agent Makes An Impact

August 10th, 2024

Solid under pressure.

Playing late in the first preseason game usually signifies a player has a long haul to make the final 53-man roster.

So the best a guy can hope for is to make an impact somehow, some way. Rookie UDFA receiver Tanner Knue did that tonight.

In his first appearance wearing an NFL uniform in a game, Knue’s numbers weren’t huge, but he did have an impact. With the Bucs trailing 14-10 with just over three minutes left, the Bucs had to march 69 yards to score a touchdown to stay in the game or win it.

In back-to-back plays, Knue caught passes down the middle of 18 and 11 yards not only to keep the chains moving, but to get the Bucs into Cincinnati real estate.

Eight plays later, undrafted rookie running back Ramon Jefferson powered his way through a haystack of players for a three-yard score and the Bucs would go home winners.

Now Joe is not saying Knue saved the Bucs. But those were two clutch catches when the Bengals knew the Bucs were going to throw.

Again, guys playing in the final minutes of the first preseason game have a long road ahead of them to make an NFL roster. But Knue’s strong catches in a pressure situation sure will help his cause when the Bucs whittle down their roster later this month.

Miller (81) was more impressive TBH.

SCORE! Yes, im one of those who loves pre ball….anyways, havent seen it all yet but other than Trask’s decision making to throw into tight coverage, it was a tight game.

Doubtful he makes the team but he may land on another team

Practice squad for a guy like him And we all know zhit happens with injuries or maybe he sticks around long enough to have a chance in the future

  6. Larrd Says:

Knue’s kick return started the drive on a good note, too. I hope they can hold on to Knue and Miller.

I see him making special teams possibly a return or even definitely a gunner at the least. Would be wise to try to keep him around cuz you never know what happens with injuries. And I don’t like saying it out loud but are elite receiving core is getting older at the top never hurts keeping you on fresh talent hanging with the team hopefully he stays as a practice squad phenom and doesn’t get picked up by another team

“keeping you on fresh talent”-⬆️- keeping young fresh talent

Why do some think Sheppard is a lock to make the roster? Knue is that pesky type of WR that will sell out to make a play. He has more versatility than Sheppard when it comes to special teams. Miller looks really good too.

Nothing wrong making a strong initial showing and keeping it up. Even if he does get cut, Knue knows there’s 31 other teams out there. Licht is a magician with these UDFA pics, and has been for years.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

Yeah, I had to look his number up. Never heard of the guy. Well, late in any Bucs preseason game, I’m always reaching for the phone to look up numbers.

All these plague year rookies are so old.

Just looking up this nerd with his nerd glasses, and it’s another 24-year old rookie.

If he was 21, maybe he has a chance to stick on the practice squad, but 24 years old, playing late in the 4th quarter, generally not a good sign. But who knows, I haven’t really seen or heard anything about him, but you’d rather make plays than not make plays. At the very least he can tell people about that time he lead a comeback vs the Bengals on the road with some bigtime 4th quarter catches, just leaving out the preseason part.

Who Knue he’d be so good?
