Report: Sterling Shepard Released

August 26th, 2024

The Turk waves goodbye.

Joe figured this would happen.

Per J.C. Allen of SI.com, the Bucs will release veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard. He came off the couch at the behest of Bucs quarterback Moxie Mayfield, Shepard’s former quarterback at Oklahoma.

Initially, this looked like a savvy signing. Shepard was pushing Trey Palmer and Jalen McMillan in the race for a No. 3 receiver. And coaches like Shepard.

Shepard, however, was injured maybe halfway through training camp and he never got back to normal. Meanwhile, two other receivers, Cody Thompson and (young, inexpensive) Kameron Johnson took advantage of Shepard’s absence and made impact plays in both practice and worthless preseason games.

That generally spells doom for a guy on the sidelines hurt. And that’s just what happened to Shepard.

The former Giants receiver is a good dude. Smart. If something should happen to one of the other Bucs receivers, Joe is confident Shepard will get another call from Mayfield.

The Bucs are in the process of shaving their roster to the mandatory 53 by 4 p.m. tomorrow.

bake is next on the chopping block.

  2. All_da_way Says:

If he wants he can come back to PS.

But the Bucs WR depth is probably the strongest on the team without doubt.

  3. Dew Says:

How about the Bucs add QB Ian Book to our practice squad??. KC released him.

  4. Joe Says:

QB Ian Book to our practice squad??

Good grief no! Wolford over this guy any day.

The Vikings just released Matt Corral – maybe they should dump Trask and sign him?

See – I can post stupid stuff, too….

    Sucks for Shep.

Would much rather him on the IR/PUP list than Edmunds. Jason knows best. Hope he heals up and stays ready. Remember the end of 2021, after banged up ME13, Brady was throwing to Grayson as his number 2. Dude showed some potential but is out of football. So depth and additional resources is critical.

I did like and do miss Tyler Johnson.

    Good One Stormy!

  8. Dew Says:

K Joe. But I’m thinking add a cheap QB to work with over retaining Wolford. Trask may leave next year so we need someone to compete for the backup position. There are a couple i would consider adding to the 53 to get them.

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Sign Roger Staubach. Since we’re getting silly.

Boss , Dumbest comment ever award goes to you!
You have to be a 15 yr old kid with no friends who has nothing better to do than troll.

  11. kgh4life Says:

I’m not surprised at all. His final years with the Giants were plagued by injuries, he came to the Bucs and guess what? He got injured.

  12. Harold Says:

get a job and life losers

  13. Fan of the South Says:

Would not be surprisde if ATL gives him a good look. After losing Rondale Moore to Injury they moved Mooney into his slot but never added any more depth and are a little thin at WR. Although they could play Pitts more at WR and keep an additional Tight End but that might muck up the works. Either way they will be looking over the Roster Cut Victims as they become available.

If Shepard is as good as some say he will get signed somewhere.

  14. Kennys Says:

He may return as a practice squad position if he clears waivers

  15. Boss Says:

WTF yall crying about. Has bake even attempted more than one drive this preseason?

tells you right there he is headed for the chopping block.

Just getting Trask up to speed to make the move.

  16. AL121976 Says:

Boss is “the realist”, just starting crap to get people going while crapping on the Bucs

  17. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Hey Joe, you might want to update your 2024 schedule on your website banner. We already played the 2023 schedule.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

From all the reports I read, he was the 3rd best WR on the Bucs early during camp (McMillan sounded like he was right there with him). Would have been a huge coup to find a guy who could be a legit #3 off the trash heap. But Shepards problem has been staying healthy.

As for the other guys, they literally said during the broadcast that Kameron Johnson already made the team.

As for Cody, he’s literally not young, he’s a 6th year player who is 28 and has 1 career catch. The idea that he can look good vs some future Uber driver doesn’t mean much. I did read he was good on special teams, but his stats don’t really show that (doesn’t mean he isn’t, just the stats aren’t there to back that up). Anyways, as a special teams guy maybe he makes the team. But I’d have much rather had a healthy Shepard who is only 3 years older than this guy – healthy being the key word.

  19. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

At this point I’d be up for Steve Deberg, Jeff Garcia or Brian Griese.

  20. Let em Bake Says:

Baker had a nice mentor/rookie relationship with Corral at Carolina. Wouldn’t shock me if Corral finds his way to Tampa in the future..

  22. NJbucs23 Says:

cody thompson deserves a shot, hes earned it

I would also stash ryan miller on practice squad

  23. SlyPirate Says:

    CRAZY

The difference between making a team and being unemployed is such a fine line.

  24. bucsablunder Says:

    Josh Freeman?

  25. Lt. Dan Says:

    9’ers cut Keyshawn Vaughan

  26. Buctooth buc Says:

We cut C.J. Brewer. I thought he would be a good back- up Dt. Wow!!

  27. heyjude Says:

    I feel bad for Sterling.

  28. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I can attest to injuries, coming off the couch… I spend most of my time on the IR, here at the house.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

    Looking at other teams castoffs…

Denver is cutting Samaje Perine. That might be a good pickup for the Bucs, I was watching some of his highlights from last year, and he still looks like he can play. I’d rather bet on him than some bum like Sean Tucker who eating up a roster spot.

  30. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rod Munch: You couldn’t hold Tucker’s jockstrap, although you’d probably like to.

  31. Badbucs Says:

Lol Whisperer. Me too. Sometimes I get injured from sleeping wrong. Looks like Shepard has that problem too. Not crazy about Thompson though. Probably better guys on the wire soon. He has to play ST.

  32. SenileSenior Says:

    😱 Good thinking, boss. 🫨😅. 😎

  33. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Isn’t Trask qb 3 anyway? I can post stupid stuff also it’s so easy to do that on this site what morons they probably support that black Indian lady
