Report: Bucs Sitting On $22 Million In Cap Room

August 6th, 2024

General manager Jason Licht.

Tristan Wirfs’ new contract has plenty of kick-the-can-down-the-road in it.

OverTheCap.com has Wirfs’ contract details and the Bucs and Wirfs opted to work the deal so the beastly left tackle only counts $6.6 million against the 2024 salary cap. Two weeks ago, Wirfs was due to count $21 million against the cap.

So now the Bucs have about $22 million in available cap space, per OverTheCap.com.

That means the Bucs could trade for just about any player in the NFL to improve the roster. And Tampa Bay has more than enough talent on the team now to win. Now that’s management!

Joe knows teams can roll over cap room (with some restrictions) into the following season, so don’t expect the Bucs to be running out to spend recklessly. But if their wounded pass rushers struggle to heal or produce, for example, Joe expects Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht to make something happen.

    Go Bucs

  2. garro Says:

    Wow!

I know this is good for our coming season but as it was with other contracts the bill always comes due at some point. So as you said I do not expect Jason and his guys to go out and buy a player just because he can.

    Go Bucs!

  3. BakerFan Says:

Joe…. there is your Edge Pass Rusher.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

One pass rusher away. Chris Braswell is a rookie and if he didn’t already take the starting job already we can’t wait to see if he comes on eventually this season. Make a trade

  5. Brian in St Pete Says:

I’d rather roll some over and save some space to get Godwin back in the building next offseason.

  6. Dude Says:

We made a move at OLB in Jay Person out of Chattanooga

  7. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Just because you have the money doesn’t mean you have to spend it.

Make sure it’s on target……beef up the linebacker corps…..or bring in a strong TE.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

It would have to be a very short term player. Bucs didn’t kick it that far. There’s some room to restructure Tristan’s salary next year but after that it’s pretty much over 30 APY for him until his contract expires.

  9. Hodad Says:

Like finding a C note in your wallet that you stashed, and forgot about. Nice to have that in the back pocket.

  10. Dave Pear Says:

More beef for the OL. Wait for cut downs and see who you can pick up cheap, but don’t spend the wad on a disgruntled player like Reddick after having to give up draft capital to get him. Unless the Eagles would take the male cosmetics designer and The Oaf in kind.

  11. Cobraboy Says:

    OR, extend Godwin.

  12. Booger Says:

I think I would’ve liked to have structured it more towards next season and the next off-season rather than this one.

  13. kgh4life Says:

Hassan Reddick who’s holding out with the Jets or Matthew Judon of the Patriots could be traded for.

  14. zzbuc Says:

    That’s quite interesting Joe!!!!
We can get the pass rusher that you and everybody is looking for ….

    Any names you would prefer?

  15. Baker Bowl Says:

Don’t think it’s worth it to trade for a game changer, I like what TB is doing with developing drafted talent, saving the money to resign vets like we have been doing is going to win us a super bowl.

Unless we’re bringing back Jameis, give him the keys to the franchise, I want to see where he takes us

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

I, too, would love to see a Godwin extension very soon.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs are currently -$4.5M for next year. So, $22M rollover is a real win.

  18. Booger Says:

There ya go, Brian… And, we’ve already missed-out on this past free agency period. Plus, all of these young guys need another full season and off-season to grow and develop closer to where they need to be & for the FO to evaluate more. To me, that would make more sense…. I don’t view this team yet, as a real legitimate contender. Ya know, I’m pretty sure we will STILL be carrying around a decent amount of dead cap for next season as well.

  19. Citrus County Says:

Joe “expects” Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht to make something happen.

Hmmmm…sniff…sniff…Does Joe know something the rest of us don’t know ?
Maybe the Jets get their 3rd rd pick back along with JTS and we get HR and an open roster spot. That would call for a toast and open our window wide.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs need to solidify that Edge. Last year we lost 4 definite games because of no Pass Rush.

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Hey Harold – is that your real name? If so your parents must have hated you.

And if you made it up, congrats on being slaptarded.

  22. NJbucs23 Says:

    Money for Godwin

  23. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Beating a dead horse named Judon. Go get him!

  24. Citrus County Says:

Joe, how would the Jets conditional 3rd (potentially 2nd) apply to us if we traded for HR ?

  25. Commander Says:

Why structure a contract to free up cap space this season if you don’t plan on using it. Could it be either for a free agent or resigning a current player.

  26. SB~LV Says:

    Bradnon Aiyuk from the 49ers

  27. SlyPirate Says:

    Harold Says:

3 people care about the Succaneers

    ^^^^^^^

    Bucs got you beat 3-0.

Just a bonus win before 4x NFCS Champs

BTW Harold, when the Bucs win it this year they’ll have:
    >Longest NFCS Championship streak
    >Most NFCS Championships
    >The current longest playoff streak in NFC

So, if the Bucs “suck” what does that make your team?

  28. rrsrq Says:

Do the Pats have any guards worth trading for, that seems to be the history

  29. heyjude Says:

Wow! Didn’t see this coming. It’s great news! So many good players out there to choose from too.

  30. ThatAintRight! Says:

Gronkowski coming back? Haha one can hope.

  31. ThatAintRight! Says:

Well I mean a lot of holes next offseason arguably, but let’s not worry about that right now. For now $22 mill is solid imo. We have extensions coming and a new draft class, but for now it helps if we really desperately need it we can use it. That’s what makes it great. RB, TE , CB , LB , DL, G

If we need help it will be one of those positions most likely.

  32. Let Them Eat Bake Says:

My big question is, if there’s unspent money at the end of the season, does Hugh Culverhpuse still get it?

  33. Pewter Power Says:

Bucs kicked the can down the road for Brady believing they had a window for the Super Bowl. Jpp shaq and suh took defense to another level. If JTS and Nelson are your veterans……..

What if Yaya is contractually double teamed. It means hope and dreams rest on Braswell. He ain’t Yaya and it took him half the season to start

  34. Dude Says:

We need money to sign the 16 man practice squad. It’s roughly about $216K for 18 weeks and for veteran players on the practice squad they earn about $289K in that same time frame. All that counts against the cap.

  35. Dude Says:

    ^^^
Per player, something like $12k/week but if you have > 2yrs exp it’s $16k/week

  36. Statguy Says:

And Barton is struggling snapping the ball. They need to have him at guard and take this freed up money and go get the Dolphins Connor Williams who is available and was the 2nd highest graded center in the league. The line would be nasty AF and a legit Super Bowl contender

  37. Bobby M. Says:

Dump Gregory and trade for Shaq.

  38. NEOhio Buc Says:

I say extend Godwin now, because next year he’ll be more expensive. Another benefit is with proper contract language and structure you can open up more cap space and trade for a DE before the trade deadline. Just in time for the playoff push.

  39. Booger Says:

How bout the local kid, Trey Hendrickson… I think he screwed up and practiced and got a little banged up/injured tho!? He’d still be extremely, COSTLY… An extension PLUS valuable draft capital, when you could kick the tires for FREE this coming offseason, if he remains unsigned.

  40. TampabayDJ Says:

Harold must be an AINTS fan.. Sorry, but they lost their winning window when Brees and their cheating coach left. They both knew that the AINTS were bound for caphell for the next 10 years. But you can keep dreaming if you want.

  41. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

    Hassan Reddick

  42. ballwasher61 Says:

Just hold yer water and wait. They are building through the draft which is the right way to do it. There is no one out there worth spending money on or they would have done so already. Patience is tough but it yields the best results and Jason has shown EVERYONE that they are willing to pay those who work hard, THAT is the way a strong team, work ethic and contender is built. GO BUCS

  43. BocaHudson Says:

This means we have enough for Reddick and can send the Jets #TryinTryon and a late round pick

  44. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Male cosmetics designer and the Oaf. Hilarious!!

  45. Buc4life Says:

Give it to m1k3 evans so he can retired as a buccaneers!! Money well spent on him he earned it!!

  46. CJBucsFan Says:

Get out of here 3 inch Harold

  47. Usfbuc Says:

Connor Williams might have been nice but he just signed with Seattle today.

  48. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

I wonder if SHAQ would come back.

  49. Badbucs Says:

Jason has a plan. Keep your powder dry. Something will happen soon enough. Has to be slated for this year….

  50. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

Make the trade with the Jets for that holdout edge

  51. Matt Says:

Licht Should spend some of that extra cash on another guard or 2.

  52. Bakersbucs says Says:

How bout leave the damn money in a high interest bearing acct pays monthly b smart don’t fart
