“Prove His Draft Status”

August 11th, 2024

It’s a beautiful Sunday for Joe to wake up and rewatch the Buccaneers game from last night.

Isn’t football season wonderful?

In addition to watching the condensed game, Joe also watches the TV copy for better replay angles and to hear Rondé Barber talk about the Bucs. Why? Because Barber has an active key card to One Buc Palace and hangs with the player evaluators and sometimes watches film with them. They tell him all kinds of stuff, some of it he’ll use on the WFLA broadcast.

If Barber says it, one can read between lines.

Third-year defensive tackle Logan Hall is penciled in as a starter, per Barber, though he played last night when Tampa Bay sat it’s key players.

“He’s been giving up some reps, some first-team reps these past couple of weeks in practice,” Barber said. “So I think this is a big, big preseason for him to try to prove his draft status from a couple of years ago.”

Amen. Hall, who started 13 games last season, was the first pick of Round 2 in 2022 and hasn’t made enough plays and doesn’t look threatening.

Might the Bucs go back to Will Gholston? Might Greg Gaines see more action?

Amarius Mims, the Bengals first round pick (No. 18 out of Georgia), played right tackle last night and had little stress against Hall and Bucs rookie Chris Braswell through the game.

If they’re so worthless ..why bother writing about them?

  2. Buc4evr Says:

Gholston didn’t look very good either last night, so it’s hard to say at this point that he would replace Hall. For that matter the whole Dline looked pretty bad. Hope Jason is looking for a vet edge rusher or two. Hall and JTS are backups at best.

  3. lambchop Says:

    @Buc4evr,

That will change once Vita Vea and Kancey play. They will open things up for the others. Another reason you can’t even evaluate other players properly when the starters around them aren’t playing. The DL is different even with Vita’s part-time job.

  4. Scott Says:

He graded out in the bottom half of our guys like usual. Issac, Ramirez, Banks, Russell were some of the guys at the top. Gholston was up there. Our backup defense seems pretty good.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Logan the Oaf will be refining his skills as a lumberjack in about nine months.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

Neither Hasll nor Gholston were particularly impressive last night.

In fact, I saw Hall get blown back a few times.

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Hall was overdrafted, he should’ve been a 4th Round pick, like Gholston. Hopefully he can be a decent role player, if not, somebody will take his job.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Hall was definitely over drafted but the Bucs were limited by who was available at the position. Looking back at that draft almost every interior d-lineman (22 total) that wasn’t Jordan Davis has been a complete bust. The only honorable mention is Travis Jones who is a true NT not a 3-tech. That’s 2 out of 22 players drafted at the position that have been ok so far in their career. We can’t even say the Bucs missed on a different player by taking Logan at this point. Hindsight is 20/20 but it’s obvious the Bucs should have drafted a different position but “needed” a 3-technique which is what Logan Hall was drafted to be. It burned them.

The preseason game was so worthless, Joe watched it twice.

Dude needs to live in the weight room. Like set up a cot, never leave.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    NICE!

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Everyone knew that Hall was a developmental prospect when we drafted him in 2022. Needed more beef, not strong enough, not overly fast, etc. And after 2 full years, we’ve gotten 33 games out him with … 3 sacks, 7 TFLs, 10 total pressures and a whopping 34 combined tackles (as in ‘1 per game’) in 946 def snaps.

Those are very underwhelming stats for a 1st Round pick. I’m certainly hoping that he has a great 2024, but at the same time, not holding my breath on that.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t know what plays he’s supposed to be making, but in that Bowles defense, his position is a dead zone for stats and making plays.

Gholston had a nice run in 2020, but also that was when teams were worried about Suh and Vita and Shaq and JPP.

Hall doesn’t stand out in any way, but in this defense you’re just not going to get sacks or splash plays that often, so its hard when watching him, as a fan, to really get a feel for things.

With that said, just play whoever is playing best. Personally I did not like the Hall pick at all, people made a big deal about a few of his highlights while leaving out the fact the guys he was tossing around literally looked like high school players (some of the offensive lineman in his highlights looked like they probably weighted 240lb while playing OT).

Also, Hall, when drafted was very tall and slim, and he’s bulked up and got a lot more heavy, you do wonder how that has affected his speed/explosiveness – but again, keep in mind in this defense, his primary responsibility is basically a run stuffing DE.

  14. JTHV Says:

    Logan Hall is Gerald McCoy

    Bust

  15. Hodad Says:

No one stood out on the Dline last night. All their QBs had to much time last night. Bucs got some money to spend since redoing Wirfs. Might have to look for some help.

  16. LakelandSteve Says:

JTHV, what are you smoking? You can’t even say Logan Hall in the same sentence as Gerald McCoy. I was not impressed with Hall or Braswell. I watched Braswell in particular and apparently he has one move, a bull rush and he wasn’t very good at that! But he’s a rookie and we have to give him this season as a pass. Some rookies don’t get it right away.

  17. Jarrett Says:

Jason lit gotta figure out this pass Rush. No doubt

We didn’t look menacing at all yesterday and Commanders rookie QB Daniels look pretty good

  18. Mort Says:

Y’all gotta calm down. Our best pass rusher is on the shelf till the opener, and the the other starter didn’t play. Let the young kids get the work they need. Take the lumps now while the score doesn’t matter.

  19. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Im not worried about Gholston in the preseason.. Why is he even out there 😂

  20. Jordan Says:

I don’t know what the snap counts were, but I thought Gaines should have had even more snaps last year. Hall was on the field too much.

He’s not horrible, but he’s just a rotational guy until further notice. He is very young though that he could still come on, especially with feeling the pressure of a new contract (or none at all) these next seasons.

  21. Cometowin2 Says:

Without Gregory, injury to Yaya and how the back up edge rushers played, Jason needs to spend up to about $10 million for this year for an edge rusher. Maybe someone good will get released soon due to a big contract.

  22. Saskbucs Says:

Honestly, it didn’t look like the DL was even trying to get back there. They look like they are so worried about maintaining their gaps and integrity in the run game that pass rushing is just a bonus. Our DL minus Diaby Kancey and Vea is probably just not very good but I imagine they worry about the run more than anything on every play. With Daniels coming to town week 1, maybe not a bad strategy.

Agree with previous poster though, once Vea and Kancey get in there… the DL push gonna look a lot different.

  23. BigBoiBuc Says:

    @joe

How would you assess our TE blocking and did it help the run game? PFF had Durham as our 4th highest graded offensive player and Kieft our 5th highest graded.

Don’t do nor put any stock in the PFF’s silly “grades.”

Was more concerned with OL’s blocking. They did well. Can’t say Joe focused on the TE’s blocking.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

The Oaf is only good for injuring teammates by oafing around. Get rid of him before he ruins Barton in practice and pull someone from the waiver wire on cutdown day. A blind midget wouldn’t be any less effective. He sucks

  26. SlyPirate Says:

I’m not worried about our DL. Hall wasn’t bad last year. Vea is a vet. CK is better. We’re fine. Yaya and at least one OLB will be step up.

Next year, the Bucs need at least 1xMLB. I could see a new DL in Round 2 if Hall doesn’t show improvement.

  27. kgh4life Says:

Hall was overdrafted due his elite physical traits; 6’6″ 280lbs and athletic, however, his technique and football instincts were lacking. The Bucs thought he could be coached up and be a contributor, but it seems it’s not gonna happen.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

I said it the day we drafted him
    Bust. Weak tweener

Worthless then.Worthless now (as a player)

  29. JimBobBuc Says:

No plays from the DL. I hope Vea and CK don’t get hurt because we have zero depth. I’m not seeing any improvement from last year. Who’s the position coach supposedly working with these guys? Ramirez played Ok but was held on nearly every snap by 79.

  30. Buccos Says:

It looks like Gholston should have gone in round one and Hall in the 4th

  31. FortMyersDave Says:

Logan Hall is likely to be known for one splash incident: ending the career of Ryan Jensen……..

  32. garro Says:

I spyed Hall some and folks for a guy who is losing reps, I just did not see the effort. Got blocked and basicly quit on one play. Wow That was not on a double team. that was one on one. Interestingly I latter saw young Judge Culpepper being doubled (for some reason) and showing absolutely no quit in him. Just saying.

    Go Bucs!

  33. White Tiger Says:

Wasn’t impressed with a lot of the D-Line play in the 1st preseason game, then again, I really wasn’t expecting it.

Mostly rookie live-action against a vanilla offense. Bengal starters left early, not much time to assess. Just looking at this as a baseline and to see if the next games show improvement.

Trying not to conclude that we basically have a lot of “just some guys” … better to not draw any conclusions until final two pre-season games.

But if we have to depend on Will Gohlston… we’re in trouble.
