Picking The “Right” Guy

August 27th, 2024

Right guy vs. best guy.

The number of homegrown players the Bucs have on the initial 53-man roster is pretty impressive.

Fourty-four were drafted and/or signed by the Bucs coming out of college.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said today this figure demonstrates that AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and his staff are sharp when it comes to acquiring talent.

“That means you’re drafting the right guys if they can make the team and contribute,” Bowles said. If you’re drafting 44 of them and you’ve only got about 15 of them [still on the roster], that doesn’t say a whole bunch. It says a lot about the front office and the draft process [and] about the coaches preparing them and getting them ready to play.

“You find players everywhere. Whether they’re free agents or whether they’re draft picks, you want the best guys on your team.”

The number of players drafted and kept is extraordinary. But Joe bets Licht and his gang wish they had two back, or perhaps just one. Imagine how much better the Bucs would be today if the Bucs hit on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka or Logan Hall.

Thinking about JTS and Hall is like thinking about the big fish in the Gulf that got away.

Yeah, Joe confesses when you have 44 guys drafted or signed by the Bucs on 53-man roster, kvetching about two misses albeit big misses really is nitpicking.

44 of 53 is very impressive….I suspect that leads the NFL….

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

This is Logan Hall’s career defining season and maybe he will become a contributor… But honestly if he doesn’t it’s not a real surprise because looking back that DT class was WEAK. The only DT that has been successful out of the 22 DT’s drafted in 2022 only ONE has become an above average starter. His name is Jordan Davis. The 13th pick of the 2022 draft for the Eagles.

Every single other player at that position (DT 3-tech position) has completely underwhelmed. The only honorable mention as a solid contributor is true Nose Tackle Travis Jones for the Ravens. But that is a different position.

Surely hindsight is 20/20 and the draft is a game of darts but its obvious the Bucs should have drafted a different position with that pick.

  3. Ben Says:

I recall Bowles/ Licht were debating beteeen Cine and Hall. So far neither has panned out but Hall seems to have more potential than Cine.

  4. Hodad Says:

The Bucs played what, 3 downs on defense? They weren’t out there long, but Hall did make one of those plays. He was able to split 2 blockers, and make a stop before the back could get a first down. So Hall made one 3rd of the plays on defense. Not bad.

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Will Gholston was a 4th round pick and look how long he’s been a buc? The position he plays is not a “premier” one so that’s great. Logan hall had no business being drafted with that first pick not with Gholston on the roster. Those aren’t my words Brady said that

  6. SteelStudBuc Says:

I think JTS could get 10 sacks this year… but he will leave, and get cut after 2 years or less on the next team.

  7. Biff Barker Says:

JTS and Logan are just catfish bottom feerders at best

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m not sure JTS and Hall really love football. I think YaYa and Kancey went to some pass rushing camps over the summer. Joe, do we know if JTS and Hall went to any camps this summer to get better?

  9. Oviedo Jim Says:

JTS IS, HAS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE A WASTE OF MONEY AND A ROSTER SPOT. BOWELS AND HIS DBS ARE QUANITY WILL OVERCOME QUALITY. HOW ABPUT MOVING

  10. D-Rok Says:

Logan and JTS – Imma call em Hall and Oates. Neither groups made an impact.

  11. Tony Says:

    @SteelStudBuc

Tryon would have a 10 sack year for them if the season extended to at least 30 games or more.

    @D-Rok

That would be a perfect name for them because they’re OUT OF TOUCH! We can’t go for that.

  12. Tony Says:

They should’ve held onto Isaac. I’d consider putting both him & DJ Williams on the practice squad at least.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe confesses when you have 44 guys drafted or signed by the Bucs on 53-man roster, kvetching about two misses albeit big misses really is nitpicking’.

    Nice bottom line Joe.

  14. Anyhony Says:

Lions cut defensive lineman Pat O’Connor.

  15. Anyhony Says:

PFT(Mike Florio): post preseason power rankings. No. 9 Buccaneers: Everyone is overlooking them, and they surely love it.

  16. Beeej Says:

At one point in the Tom Landry era, Preston Pearson was the ONLY Dallas Cowboy not drafted by the team. Bucs are getting there

  17. View from 132 Says:

    Good history note Beeej.

I’m impressed when a team of 44 home grown guys wins a SB. Favoring your own without winning says nothing.

  18. Beeej Says:

    baby steps

  19. Buccos Says:

Just because all of those draft picks are still on the roster doesn’t mean that they were all good picks. Licht is unquestionably a top tier GM but Logan Hall and JTS were not great picks. Where he has done extremely well is with UDFA’s. Tucker and Izien are prime examples of this. His later round and mid round picks have done very well too like Diaby, White and Whitehead. His only weakness seems to be in 1st and 2nd rounds

  20. Dave Pear Says:

The Oaf and the Headless Chicken. Ya can’t hit on them all.

Jason is a beast. Hoping that Shep can be clawed back. Don’t understand why they didn’t IR him esp. with Todd’s affection for him.

  21. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Yup. Jason licht knock it out of the park drafting HOF Mike Evans in his first pick ever.
    Also got mayfield for squadoosh.
And he got Wirfs, the fourth tackle taken on that years draft.

  22. Beeej Says:

    and by FAR, the best

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Interesting news today, that I think affects the Bucs, is the NFL owners voting to allow equity firms to buy up to 10% of franchises.

For the Bucs, that could mean the Glazers could pocket around $550-million. The reason that could be big is RayJay is 26 years old already. If they do a hard push for a stadium, which you figure will cost in the billions, that $550-million could be the team side of the cash for the stadium.

I’m really wondering when we’re going to start hearing about the stadium, it should be any time now, in particular now that Rays are getting a billion dollars for that ugly middling stadium project they’re doing. Maybe the Bucs were waiting on this to go through so they can come to the table with some sizeable amount of cash to claim they’re doing their side of things.

Just a thought, we shall see what happens, but it’s been quiet, almost too quiet, about a new Bucs stadium.

  24. heyjude Says:

Jason Licht and Bowles picking the right guys can pat themselves on the back. They are doing well. This is monumental and shows that the Bucs are going forward not backwards.

Rod Munch – Thank you for the info and I agree about the stadium. Sounds right. The Buffalo Bills will have their new stadium ready to go in the 2026 season. Thinking the Bucs will have a new stadium approved in 2-4 years. Unsure if they will go with a retractable cover or not. A lot to think about, that’s for sure.

  25. Goldenbuc Says:

I don’t know where the hate for Logan hall comes from. He does the job he’s asked. He’s never gonna be a 10 sack guy.

But he will help plug up the line. And compliment Vita. They wanted to get faster on the D front and they did with him and Kancey

He’s probably more of a 3rd round pick but he’s not a bad player on tape.
