One starter who won’t play tonight is outside linebacker YaYa Diaby.
How does Joe know? It’s what Diaby told Joe to his face Wednesday after the final practice of training camp.
Diaby blew his ankle a three-plus weeks ago right when he was beginning to dominate on defense.
How much are the Bucs banking on Diaby and are confident in him? Well, a guy who had eight more sacks the last three seasons than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was traded to the Bears this morning for a sixth-round pick (Darrell Taylor). That’s how confident the Bucs are.
So confident are the Bucs, Peter Schrager this morning, a co-host of “Good Morning Football” seen on NFL Network weekday mornings, predicted Diaby to be one of his top-10 breakout players for the 2024 season.
Schrager didn’t just get that intel from thin air.
So when Joe spoke with Diaby, Joe asked him to give a message for Bucs fans about how he is doing.
“I’m feeling good right now,” Diaby said. “I’m taking it day-by-day.”
Diaby spent the better part of the offseason framing his body to help perform the tasks Bucs coach Todd Bowles wants.
“I felt great,” Diaby said. “Great going into this year. I had a terrific offseason. Just helping myself, helping my body. [Working on] flexibility and those types of things.”
While Diaby is clearly bummed he is not yet on the practice field, he told Joe he feels good right now.
Diaby tried to put a positive spin on how he is spending time at practices while on floppy hat patrol. He’s trying to use that time to get sharp mentally.
“Not being able to practice, it’s helping me see the game better [by] getting mental reps,” Diaby said. “That has definetly helped me out a lot.”
Joe cannot begin to think what the Bucs defense may look like if Diaby can’t get back on the field for a while and rookie Chris Braswell isn’t yet ready. Ugh.
But Diaby was emphatic to Joe that he will be ready to go Week 1. Who would know his body better than Diaby?

My top 3 breakout candidates for the team are…
1. Kancey
2. Yaya
3. Otton
Not counting rookies, since you can’t ‘breakout’ when you haven’t been in the NFL yet. But for rookies, obviously Barton is the guy who you expect to be very good early on.

Not sure what the confusion about JTS is. He clearly didn’t get traded but probably isn’t worth a sixth round pick based on Taylor, who’s had more sacks than JTS, only fetching a sixth round pick when he got traded to the Bears.

Bowles doesn’t need a pass rusher, he wants to blitz the house on every play. I hope YaYa has help because it’s easy for an offense to erase one guy

Actually Joe Scratch that. Reading comprehension should be all of our friends. You were talking about Taylor and first read quickly led peeps to jump to conclusions. Doesn’t happen much these days.
I thought he was alluding to the lack of JTS in Any way. 🙂
