Payne Durham Suffers Knee Injury

August 14th, 2024

UPDATED: The Bucs really lucked out with YaYa Diaby’s sprained ankle, which at the time of the injury weeks ago looked much worse than it is. Will the Bucs be so lucky with Payne Durham?

The second-year tight end out of Purdue suffered a knee injury today at practice in Jacksonville against the Jaguars. Durham caught a short pass in red zone work and got up slowly. He walked to the Bucs’ sideline under his own power. Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed the injury after practice.

Bowles said Durham is undergoing tests to determine the severity.

Durham this summer has been getting a bunch of work with the Bucs’ first-team offense. Not as much as starter Cade Otton, but if the number of snaps a player gets with the first team in training camp is an accurate barometer, Durham looked to enter the season as the team’s No. 2 tight end.

Based on practice snaps, if Durham can’t go, rookie seventh-round pick Devin Culp will be the No. 2 tight end and veteran Ko Kieft will be the No. 3 tight end.

Culp and Keift have different skillsets. Kieft is more like a fullback and is very good blocking defenders on the second and third levels. Culp is more of a pass-catching tight end who works the seams.

    I have really high hopes for Durham this year. Hope it’s nothing serious. The way you described it Joe, it sounds like a non contact injury. Yea?

  2. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Oh no. Non contact injuries are never good.

  3. Fred McNeil Says:

    I agree with Leopold on that. Joe didn’t specify so we can’t know, but it doesn’t sound too bad. Mighta just bumped it a little.

  4. SlyPirate Says:

    Silver lining, if there is one, is more snaps for Culp.

    Unless he was carted off – I’m going with a minor injury so I don’t puke.

  6. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    Well, cut-downs are coming. get a TE reject on the cheap. This is worse group on the Bucs this year so it shouldn’t be difficult to upgrade.

  7. Brian in St Pete Says:

    Hopefully a sprain. That’s quite enough injury scares before week one, thanks.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

    I like Culp’s workout numbers, but a guy with those numbers doesn’t drop to the 7th round without a reason – and his reason was that he couldn’t actually catch the ball. Hopefully he’s figuring that out if he’s put into this position – but I think the Bucs would likely need to sign someone who is more of a straight up blocker to fill that #2 role if Durham is out. Hopefully he’s fine, it sounds like he’s leveled up over the offseason.

    Kieft is appearing to be useless

    Not worthless at all – his role is as Joe stated, more of a fullback, who can play in the backfield and on the line, can block pretty well and catch the ball once in a while. Just does all the dirty work no one notices, really, and teams need guys like that. In his role, he’s a good fit. But he’s not a guy you want as your #2 TE.

    This is too bad. Hopefully, only a sprain like YaYa.

  12. Saskbucs Says:

    Don’t like that. Another of our guys that seemed primed for a 2nd year leap.

    SC BUC FAN: Are you serious? His family reads this. How rude could you possibly be?

    Guy did basically nothing on our team this loss is a wash

    @Pryda

    Maybe you should try out? My guess is your ceiling was co-Ed flag football in the church league. Coached by your dad of course so you got playing time.

    Devin Culp has a 90 speed rating on madden that’s the same speed as trey palmer I like it…HD sucks at blocking

  17. Stanglassman Says:

    Durham’s injury is that it is not severe and one team source told Pewter Report that Durham is likely day-to-day.

    Good news.

    Damn, I didn’t even realize it was out – I thought it was next week.

    Having a fast TE is huge in Madden as you can just run go routes vs zone and get you an easy 10-15 yards on pretty much any play, or in man just run deep corners towards the sidelines and that’s good for like 20-25 yards.

    Cancey’s injury last year was a non-contact injury and it cost him about 2 months to recover. I remember the video. He was dancing with a tackling dummy and then just went down in pain. I wonder if this years mystery ailment is some sort of relapse?

    @rod munch
    Pre ordered and got it a week earlier…our stock depth chart scares me and bakers overall is whack compared to the season he had.
