Orlando Brown Jr. Compares Baker Mayfield To Patrick Mahomes & Other Top QBs

August 12th, 2024

So who’s the calmest big-moment quarterback in the huddle that four-time Pro Bowl right/left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. has played alongside?

Brown is in his second season with the Bengals, so he’s played with Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson in the NFL. And he played with a QB named Baker Mayfield in college.

Brown fielded this question on the CBS Sports HQ airwaves and struggled for an answer.

“Hard for me to pinpoint that,” Brown said, saying it’s an “interesting” question.

He first went to Mahomes and talked about his calm in a game-winning Super Bowl drive, then he went to Mayfield in a double overtime win at the University of Tennessee and talked about Mayfield’s “poise in those situations.”

Brown also was asked to compare those QBs when it comes to barking at opponents.

“Baker Mayfield is definitely top of the trash-talking list,” he said.

Joe thinks it’s cool that Brown put Mayfield on a plane with a few superstar quarterbacks. That sounds familiar.

  1. Marcus Nerone Says:

Does he mean like the big moment of your last drive in a playoff game and throwing a pick?

  2. BucsFan55 Says:

    Go Bucs

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Everyone knows that the Trashkophiles would know more about QB play than one of the top players in the league who has played with these guys. Clearly it’s all a part of the broader Trashk Suppression Conspiracy.

  4. D Cone Says:

Ranked 7th in Arm Strength on a list of top 10. That’s where you can draw the line in comparisons. Other important categories Mayfield was a lot farther down than 10. Trash Talk was not one of the areas ranked but what has accuracy have to do with being an elite QB?

  5. Bucswin! Says:

He would have needed 40 to win that game. Defence should have never put him in that situation. = Team sport. Go BUCS! Especially with that o line. Just saying.

  6. lambchop Says:

    @Marcus,

Your reading comprehension sucks. The conversation was about poise under pressure, not about being error-free. If you’d like that broken down into syllables, I can help.

  7. Pryda30 Says:

Cmon Baker have another Stellar year please

  8. Dave Pear Says:

Bucswin! – solid point. However there are people who get triggered if you criticize the Masturmind and his genius defense that the last two seasons gave up passing yards like a street worker giving away free favors. With limited pass rush, he takes his rookie who might be a good pass rusher, and keeps him in coverage. Well-roundedness is fine and necessary, but that also means letting him rush the passer once in a while to develop NFL level pass rush skills. For well-roundedness.

Saturday, still couldn’t cover a slant or stop a 3rd and 17, or prevent a top tier QB like Burrow from scoring an opening drive TD and slicing them like a ham.

I thought it would be different, and still might be. Hopefully. Need to see demonstrated results on the field, early. Score a TD on the Bucs opening drive and stuff the Jags on theirs. Whatever happens after that I don’t care.

  9. Show Me the TDs Says:

    @lambchop,

    Since you do not appear to know what the word, “poise” means here is an example from a 2 second internet search;

    “What does being poised mean?
If you’re poised you’re self-possessed and in full control of your faculties. You’re balanced, grounded, and ready for action. A poised person exhibits composure and self-assuredness, which comes in handy, for instance, during a job interview, giving a public talk or debate, or playing sports.”

Throwing an INT on your first pass, with 1:39 left in the game and a reasonable chance to win does not meet the definition. Sorry if that was more than two syllables, but you get the gist.

  10. Rayjay1122 Says:

Notice to all krewe, privateers and all other sea riving scallywags, set sails for the boat parade next spring!!! Go Bucs!! 💪

  11. Kenton Smith Says:

Some Bucs fans aren’t gonna like this comment. True Bucs fans will. I’ll ask you to listen to Bucs GM on Ira podcast last week. The point of the interview where he talked about Mayfields leadership qualities. Did he say that Baker Mayfield was on par with the legendary Tom Brady in terms of leadership?Sounded to me like he did. Just saying. Leaders know leaders. We’ll lose a few games this year. But not many. And say what you will about Mayfield. He always finishes strong. We’re gonna be one tough out come finishing time this postseason. Gentlemen-Place your bets!

  12. Dave Pear Says:

    Aye! Aaaaahhhhhrrrrrrr!

  13. Boss Says:

bake is an average qb, with an above average smack talking game…….when the rubber meets the road he is just meh

The greats let their play do the talking…or at least reserve talking smack until they are great.

i.e. his mouth be writing checks his ass can’t cash.

  14. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Glad we signed a punter to give Camarda some competition. He was not up to standards AT ALL the other night.

  15. heyjude Says:

That’s our QB Baker Mayfield! Brown talking him up, Tyreek talking him up, and so many other players respect Baker. Tyreek knows a strong QB when he sees one. He worked with Patrick Mahomes. We are so lucky to have Baker. Go Bucs!

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

Anyone remember Terry Bradshaw? Throwing to Swann and Stallworth? Four Super Bowl rings. Joe Montana? Throwing to Rice and Taylor?Three Super Bowl rings. This Bucs team reminds me of those teams. All around teams with great chemistry. And unapologetic gunslingers. Absolute respect to Tom Brady. But I’d have preferred playing on those Steeler or Niner teams than the Pats teams. And I see Mayfield throwing to Evans and Godwin alongside our defense and chemistry as I see those old Steeler and Niner teams. Great teams. All decade teams. We’ll see soon enough but that’s what I’m seeing.

  17. A Bucs Fan Says:

Hey Joe Hassan Reddick officially requested a trade from the Jets…. It could still happen.

  18. Boss Says:

    double wide? I’m jealous

  19. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Kenton

We’re gonna need a much better Defense to be in those conversations.

  20. heyjude Says:

Kenton – Great comment! Our team has strong chemistry going into this season. Feeling and seeing that our Bucs have something special going on too. Baker is definitely one of those leaders!

Dave Pear – I think the Bengals thought they were going to win. Putting Burrows in there right away was their strategic move to get ahead and get the momentum going. And then the Bucs happened! Coen has an edge. Early leads would be fantastic, but we need to keep them way ahead, so the other team cannot come back at the end of the 4th quarter and win.

  21. Dom Says:

Hasson Reddick has requested a trade from the Jets. Bucs need to jump on this

  22. Jeagan1999 Says:

Did anyone just see that Hanson Redick is requested a trade from the Jets now??

  23. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe…Did you just see that Haason Reddick is requesting a trade from the Jets now??

  24. GoneGator Says:

So an outside source mentions our starting QB in a positive light, based on his experience, and predictably, within minutes, the usual nimrods give their counterpoint.

More Baker haters in the so called fan base, at least in the comments section here, than in the national media. SMH. It’s a shame really.

Going to be a great season for our offense. Coens new offense is going to be explosive. Bakers going over 4000, 30+ TDs, single digit pics, 65% easy. Watch 😎

  25. Dave Pear Says:

Coen and the OL and the RBs , as well as the deep WRs and TEs, all encouraging. Even ol’ Ko Kieft made a play. That has me stoked.

Just a little concerned with Wolford and the other guy – neither imbued me with the confidence that they can manage a few victories if Bake gets taken out by the Thug Saints.

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

If that was true he wouldn’t be on his 4th team in 6 years come on now! But the season starts in 3 weeks. And if you guys really believe that then say it with me it’s NFC Championship or bust. If you can’t say it shut comparing him to Mahomes. Because he’s the one of the reasons why they’re a super bowl contender every year he’s been in the NFL.

  27. Dave Pear Says:

    Boss — LOL!

  28. KABucs Says:

I still would like to see Baker play a whole season behind a decent line. I think Brady was our missing piece in 2020 and he had a pretty good line in front of him. Let’s give Baker a shot with the same situation and see what happens. Difference is, Baker has young up and comers replacing some pretty seasoned vets the Tom had (Gronk, AB, Lenny, etc). Brady had a lot of nice toys but I think our young guns will surprise those outside of Tampa bay.

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

Gone gator. It’s not hate bro just look at the facts we were a 9-8 team in the weakest division in football. And our defense was ranked 7th in the league now all of it ain’t Baker fault but he played a roll in it . But come on man you know Baker ain’t no where even close to Mahomes. Let me ask you this that last drive against the lions who would you rather Baker or Mahomes? I watched Mahomes against the 49ers defense and he came through when the ball was in his hands . I hope Baker throws for 5,000 yards and 48 tds and we win the Superbowl. Now for Mahomes to get those numbers is very possible but for Baker according to his career you have to wait and see. He haven’t put together 2 season in row his whole career. And last year was a average season for quarterbacks like Mahomes. Man Mahomes score a touchdown in 13 seconds against the Bills in the playoffs. They actually changed the overtime rules because of what Mahomes done to Buffalo. Baker Mayfield has to prove it to some of us in the fan base. That’s why I say it’s NFC Championship or bust because he has to play better than last year when the game is on the line.

  30. DivisDruid Says:

Joe. Hassan Reddick has requested a trade. Are we interested?

  31. Dave Pear Says:

Otard with more gibberish. It’s surprising that she’s not on the networks and podcasts, sharing her deep wisdom about the QB position.

There is one person in the organization that owns the W/L record for a team in a given season and that would be the Head Coach.

The guy in that position for the Bucs has a career losing record, and an overall losing record with two franchises. That includes the only losing record Tom Brady ever experienced in his whole life.

Jason has put the pieces together for this to be an 11 or 12 win team, assuming the head coach follows through on his improvement pledges from the off-season. With Coen instead of the Motivational Speaker Canalwater calling plays and gameplanning, Baker should eclipse 4500 yards passing and 30 TDs. With the running game looking much better, 25ppg average should be quite achievable. With earlier starts that can give Todd a lead to call defense with, it should help the defense.

But by all means, hope for Otard’s sake the NFL comes calling with a contract . If a team did the exact opposite of everything the eggplant says, they’d win the Super Bowl.

  32. Gipper Says:

    Oneilbuc,
Get over it. When the game was on the line Mayfield threw for 3 TD’s vs Detroit. Goff operated behind the best O line in the league and suddenly his career has been rejuvenated after years of struggle with LA. Any fair reading of Mayfield’s last play at Detroit suggests that Otton and Godwin nearly ran into each other. Otton ran the wrong route and was supposed to be “sitting down” underneath the Detroit linebackers. You and others have some sort of axe to grind with Mayfield long before the Detroit interception. Licht is trying to rebuild on the fly Tampa O line. When O line jells, Mayfield will be in top six of NFL QB’s. Will be reminding you and RodMunch of your negativity every single week in new season.

  33. Kenton Smith Says:

Jmarkbuc-I maybe sometimes I let my wistfulness get away from me.

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Gipper. You deserve a good and proper beverage for that comment. Thank you.

Rational thought doesn’t work on a cretin like Otard or blind Trashkophiles. That group needs heavy narcotics until the just go away.

  35. Todd Says:

That graphic scared the crap out of me. At first glance, I thought Baker was being carted off the practice field.

    Joe, in the future…please don’t.

    “Shart, meet pants.”

  36. Don'tBmad Says:

Trask is trash….get rid of him

  37. heyjude Says:

    Wow about Hasson Reddick!

Unfortunately, the Jets issued a statement that they are not going to grant him a trade and he will still be fined.

  38. Student of the Game Says:

Oneilbuc, football is a team sport. Mayfield doesn’t even play defense. Every team that did better than TB in 2023 had a better defense than TB. Even in 2023 and beyond, defense win championships, just like the old days.

  39. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

Everyone is trashing Baker’s performance last year. Are you kidding me? We had no run game because the offensive line was half piemeal due to retirements and injuries. Problems have been solved. It’s a brand new day. Breathe in. Breathe out. Bucs are looking great!!!

  40. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Golf proved he can get to a super bowl at least with a good team . Baker Mayfield haven’t prove he can get to a conference championship yet that’s why I say NFC Championship or bust. But you guys every thing hate even when Baker plays bad . Baker had a good game against the lions but when the game was in his hands to either win or tie it he threw a pick on the his second throw. And I actually thought Baker played bad that game until I went back and watched it. And when he threw that pick no receiver bump each other he threw that ball straight to the linebacker it was a bad throw.

  41. Shane Callahan Says:

Keep telling all of you to watch the OU vs Texas Tech/ Mayfield vs Mahomes shootout. It’s still the record setting offensive display ever in college football. So cool for non-Trasker Bucs fans, I promise. 🙂

  42. Shane Callahan Says:

There’s great reasons why the undersized Mayfield has been rated as the greatest college QB by SI since 2000, the first walk on to ever win the Heisman, and a #1 draft pick. He got drafted by the BROWNS! and turned them around. Because he played hurt for 15 games his last season with him, they traded him to the Stinking Panthers. He eventually arrives to TB who had a subpar IOL and leagues worst running game and gets y’all a playoff victory. It is a team game. I KNOW he can deliver a Super Bowl to TB if his team plays as smart and hard as he does. Then, everyone in TB and OK will enjoy watching the Baker Mayfield movie 10-15 years from now. Go Bucs!!!

  43. Rod Munch Says:

He first went to Mahomes and talked about his calm in a game-winning Super Bowl drive, then he went to Mayfield in a double overtime win at the University of Tennessee and talked about Mayfield’s “poise in those situations.”

    ————

The last pass Baker threw was him LITERALLY throwing an INT when he collapsed in the biggest moment of his career, costing the Bucs a chance at winning a playoff game.

Literally the last throw Baker has thrown in a game was that.

  44. Gipper Says:

    Oneillbuc,

You are wrong about the Detroit interception. The tape doesn’t lie even if you do.

  45. Shane Callahan Says:

Rod Munch. I didn’t say he was perfect, but he saved your flipping season!!!

  46. Ol' Boy Says:

Actually that was antonie Winfield with the red cape on.

  47. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

    >>>If that was true he wouldn’t be on his 4th team in 6 years come on now! But the season starts in 3 weeks. And if you guys really believe that then say it with me it’s NFC Championship or bust. If you can’t say it shut comparing him to Mahomes. Because he’s the one of the reasons why they’re a super bowl contender every year he’s been in the NFL.

I mean, we don’t have to. Our coach has already said our goal needs to be the Super Bowl. That we did some good things and came up short last year, and this is a year to improve. So yeah… NFC is the goal.

Also I think it’s hilarious that Baker, for all he had a bad throw at the end of a game where he played well to end the season, is still a better playoff QB than Jackson. Joe Burrow choked away leads in both of his playoff losses.

Baker at least has been let down by his defense and had to unsuccessfully try to claw back into the game late in both of his playoff losses. That’s probably what Orlando is talking about in terms of poise.

  48. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

    @Shane Callahan

Don’t listen to Rod. No one here does really. He predicted we’d win 4-5 games last year. He claimed he’s ‘happy to be wrong,’ but really has been butt-hurt about Baker proving him wrong basically all off-season.

  49. Dave Pear Says:

Salt truck with more solid points. Narratives can be dangerous if they become religions.

  50. Marky Mark Says:

Like they say in the public service announcements about teens and social media stop comparing your self other people it will just make you feel bad. Baker is unique. The Bucs pulled him off the trash heap and got a bargain. Pressure is pressure but the real pressure is on the Browns to prove stabbing Baker in the back and rewarding predatory serial sex offender was worth it all. The Bucs won that one already.

  51. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Question: was Brad Johnson a top 10 QB ? Not by far. But he got us to the top then didn’t he? Is Baker a better QB ? Maybe. All I’m saying here is that it’s not a one man show, it is up to every man on the field being on the same page, and executing the game plan week in and week out. Did Tom Brady single handedly win that Superbowl? No. But his work ethic rubbed off on everybody and they all bought in. The Desire to be a great QB that got picked way down in the last round.

  52. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

    “Marcus Nerone Says:
    August 12th, 2024 at 12:02 pm
Does he mean like the big moment of your last drive in a playoff game and throwing a pick?”

Marcus, Brady’s last pass as a Patriot was a pick-6 at HOME in the playoffs against Tennessee. Identical situation, needing a last-minute miracle drive in under 2 minutes of a playoff game where failure is far more common than success, even for guys like Brady and Mahomes. The difference is Mayfield was on the road, pinned deep with a loud crowd right in his ear.

Those miracle, last-minute comebacks are magical because they are RARE and NOT EASY. QBs and their OCs have to take chances and the opposing defenses may play a “prevent-style” looser D, but they also take chances and jump routes, try to force a fumble, etc to try to end the game on their terms.

Putting that loss against the Lions in the Playoffs squarely on Mayfield is garbage and doesn’t give him or the rest of the team credit for being competitive and having a chance to win in a big game like that on the road that everyone thought would be a blow out loss for the Bucs.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

@Shane Callahan – I was talking about the nonsense about him being clutch in the article, I didn’t even read comments before posting.

But the fact is, in the biggest moment in Baker’s career, with everything on the line, in the dream scenario every has had since they were a kid, with a playoff game on the line – Baker threw an INT two plays later and the season was over.

That’s not clutch. It’s literally the opposite of clutch. He completely collapsed in the biggest moment of his career. No one should ever talk about Baker being clutch unless, multiple times, he comes up big in that situation in the future.

That doesn’t mean he should be non-stop bashed for it , buy my god, people pretend as if no one saw that, as if it didn’t happen. I assure you, it did happen.

  54. Bakersbucs says Says:

the receiver was in the wrong spot called in the play know it all

  55. GoLongBucs Says:

On that pick at Detroit, if the player wasnt in the right spot, the pick will happen. i need to look at the tape but Baker is smart & accurate – he is throwing to the spot. player needs to be there.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

Baker and accurate are opposing statements.

Regardless, the comment is about Baker allegedly being clutch when the last pass we’ve seen him throw was literally an INT with a playoff game on the line.

    That’s not clutch.
