Law And Order Role For Todd Bowles

August 14th, 2024

Security detail this morning for Todd Bowles.

So the Bucs and Jaguars lined up on the Jacksonville practice fields today for a two-hour work session in pads. However, tackling to the ground was not permitted.

What about quality pushing and shoving? Or a fight or two typical of a joint practice?

Joe didn’t even see any player on either team look angry. There were no scuffles or heated exchanges in Joe’s view, and Joe didn’t see any reported.

Quick whistles were common and the play was exceptionally clean.

Another unique aspect of practice was Todd Bowels spending the entire time with the Tampa Bay offense.

Joe asked Bowles about that after practice and he explained that he and Jags head coach Doug Pederson agreed that each would be on one of the two practice fields at all times.

Bowles said it was a necessary move to help keep the peace. Apparently, it worked, and Bowles praised the professional approach on the fields.

Bucs right guard Luke Goedeke, known for being an instigator, said it was an exceptionally clean practice. He added that some players in the NFL enter a joint practice looking to start a fight and they get one.

But that’s not the 2024 Bucs — or the Jaguars, Goedeke said. “I don’t think either team kind of has those kinds of guys and nothing escalated. “

Tackling not allowed?? And how exactly is this better for the first team than a preseason game?
    Bunch of overpaid line dancers

  2. Fred McNeil Says:

I don’t quite know if that’s a good thing or bad. It certainly is different. LOL.

  3. Ol' Boy Says:

“Football is two things. It’s blocking and tackling. I don’t care about formations or new offenses or tricks on defense. You block and tackle better than the team you’re playing, you win.” Vince Lombardi
How can you practice football, how can you scrimmage another team without tackling? You fools that want 18+ games a season are going to get exactly what you wish for. Why would you want this to be a part of what it means to play football? The first six games are going to look like preseason games no matter who’s name is on the jersey because they won’t even practice fundaments in the name of safety and money.
Tackling and blocking..without these fundamentals, it’s just overpaid line dancers

I am against retaliation after the play is over. That is when the refs are looking. But, there are ways to retaliate during the play and not get caught.

  5. SlyPirate Says:

Let’s get to the good stuff. Where is Joe’s famous play-by-play report?!!!! Heard Bucky scored a TD and our WR need more stickum.

  6. Dude Says:

Sounds like we started slow on offense today…..

  7. BakerFan Says:

Guess you can not share links, I tried and it was taken down, but the Jags already have notes up from their perspective, Sounds like our D Line had its way.

  8. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

I’m not worried about any lack of aggression coming from Luke, Cody, or Graham. Those 3 dudes will bust a knot in a head. And Wirfs – well just lay down already before he steamrolls you. LG – we shall see.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

So you can’t tackle in practice, and Bowles refuses to play his starters in preseason games as well.

Gee, that’s going to work out great, for sure.

BTW, early reports I’m seeing are saying that Bucs got demolished in the practice with the Jags – although if you can’t even tackle, which means you’re not playing at full speed, I have no idea how you’d know that.

  10. Brian in St Pete Says:

Good for the guys for keeping their cool. Keep your ammo dry for the real war in a few weeks.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah, keep your cool man – because who wants passion or excitement or to be entertained, am I right? Better to just hand the ball to the ref and walk back to huddle, after all this isn’t the entertainment business.

  12. BucU Says:

Biggest news of the day: No major injuries reported.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

BucU – Durham was injured, he’s your backup TE at a position with no depth, so that might be a big deal if it’s serious. Hopefully he’ll be fine.

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

At least you can tackle in worth less preseason games.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

The NFL pushing flag football for the Olympics says it all, and the future of what they want the game to be. Todd is just helping to usher in that future.

  16. Leopold Stotch Says:

You guys are overreacting to a non story. The point of joint practices are to get live reps in specific situations. There’s no need to finish a tackle to the ground, exposing both players to injury when we know the play is dead. It’s practice against someone who doesn’t know your tendencies or traits. Why risk injury or someone taking offense and causing a skirmish, which just ruins the practice, because everyone’s going to be on edge trying to get even?

Todd will play the starters in the 3rd game, I’m pretty sure he said that. After the superbowl, our starters had 2 series and they were done for the preseason. No one complained about it after that, we almost went to the NFCC. The LA Rams never play their starters and they’re now annual playoff contenders. Remind me, who on the staff is a McVay desciple? Oh right Coen, our OC.

So calm down with the soft team and Bowles is helping usher in flag football. It’s practice and yeah there can be arguments made about learning how to land and getting used to it, but at this point players can already tackle or they can’t. Just trust the process.

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

JJ Russell instinctively tackled a rb at the sidelines and it looked like he apologized immediately. No tempers.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Leopold Stotch – That SB team wasn’t learning a new offense and didn’t have a bunch of new starters.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

J-White warmed up but didn’t play. Joe, what’s his status?

  20. Mr. Editor Says:

@JimBobBuc: do you mean Jordan Whitehead?

  21. Leopold Stotch Says:

Rod- The point of my argument is that not tackling to the ground doesn’t make anyone soft. They’re still learning the offense, regardless if during a joint practice players aren’t getting put to the ground.

  22. Ol' Boy Says:

Offense doesn’t tackle. It blocks. Defense tackles. Anyway, this is school playground stuff. As long as they are all behaving and mannered, Mrs Pasternack will allow them to continue playing.

  23. JimBobBuc Says:

Whitehead warmed up outside with a trainer but didn’t play.

  24. Pryda…sec147 Says:

    Nice

  25. Scott Says:

I read somewhere that his defense got torched today. Accurate?

  26. BA's Red Pen Says:

Wow how totally unpredictable . The same fat drunk miserable old get off my lawn guys lobbing their tired old man takes, put a skirt on blah blah blah. Every single player on the field would whip everyone of ya”lls fat key board tuff guys azzes.

  27. unbelievable Says:

    Durham injured.

    Kancey injured / not practicing.

Already lost Diaby up until the season starts.

    Buckle up fans.

Rod- The point of my argument is that not tackling to the ground doesn’t make anyone soft.

    ———

Literally every head coach I’ve ever heard, that I respect, says tackling is the biggest issue early in the season – and you have to tackle in practice if you want to be any good at it.

If you’re not tackling in practice, and you’re not playing in games, I see that as an issue.

This team was 4-7 last year – and the division isn’t going to be a complete cupcake yet again that you win by just showing up. The Falcons just traded for an ALL-PRO edge rusher from the Pats – for example.

Playing it safe, worried first and foremost about what can go wrong isn’t going to win anything.

  29. Leopold Stotch Says:

Rod- Fair enough, I see where your concern is coming from. I’m waiting for the 3rd game though, before I press the wtf is Bowles doing button. I’m trying to trust him, which has been hard after the zero blitz debacle, going 8-9 with Brady, and overall being frustrating.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Without the detailed practice notes, it’s hard to say what happened unless you were there. I wasn’t. But, I continue to worry that Todd’’s genius does not transfer well onto the football field, given he has football players instead of PhD level quantum physicists.
