Late Night Leftovers: Bucs 2024 Training Camp, Day 7 (More) Notes

August 2nd, 2024

Joe had additional comments about plays witnessed from Bucs training yesterday. Since some really like these offerings, Joe thought he’d serve sort of like a late-night snack of Bucs football nuggets.

Some of the following Joe had twittered out during practice on Thursday morning.

* Rachaad White out here returning punts. The way he avoids tacklers in the open field in the passing game this might be a savvy move.

* Baker Mayfield goes long for Cade Otton down the right sideline and Otton hauls it in for a long touchdown. That’s two deep-ball TDs by Cade Otton from Mayfield in the last two practices.

* Mayfield hits Payne Durham right in the shoulder for a 20-yard touchdown on the left side. Durham has slimmed down. Just based on first six practices, have a hunch Durham will get more targets this season, possibly as the No. 2 tight end.

* Kyle Trask with a beautiful pass to Ko Kieft. The Traskites will twist this as Joe writing Baker Mayfield will he cut.

* OMG Big run up the middle by Rachaad White. Ran with a purpose.

* Anthony Nelson would have wiped out Trask if he was allowed to hit QBs. Nelson is very quietly having a strong camp.

* Kyle Trask with a perfect bomb down the middle for Sterling Shepard. He breaks two tackles and houses the ball. Not sure what is better, Shepard making two guys miss right when he caught the ball or Trask’s pass.

* José Ramirez against Tristan Wirfs is not just unfair, but wrong. Still, Ramirez got penetration on the pocket. After the play, Ramirez bent over to pick up something or tie his shoe, Joe couldn’t tell. Mayfield ran up, said something to him and patted him on the helmet.

* Mayfield tries for Mike Evans down right sideline. But Evans couldn’t run through Zyon McCollum who was defending on the play.

* White is running up middle almost angry.

* UDFA Kalen DeLoach (Florida State) flies across the line untouched. Up until Tuesday night he was invisible. Perhaps things are starting to click for him.

* Pass rush, with maybe two exceptions thus far, nowhere near as ferocious as Tuesday night. One big difference is Tristan Wirfs is on the field.

* Chris Godwin appeared to be in triple coverage and still hauled in a short pass.

* UDFA Tyrek Funderburk (App State) knocks away what looked like a sure catch by Mike Evans from Baker Mayfield. Funderburk then celebrates his accomplishment with the Vernon Hargreaves umpire safe sign. When Hargreaves was the Bucs’ starting corner, a quarterback could throw the ball 40 rows up into the seats and if that same pass went over his Hargreaves’ head, he would run around signaling safe like he defended the pass.

* Bucky Irving catches a pass from Mayfield along right sideline and immediately McCollum puts him on the ground. The Bucs had direct orders Thursday morning not to tackle to the ground. So McCollum wasn’t trying to blow up Irving, but sometimes it happens.

* First couple of days of training camp, Bucs backup quarterback John Wolford looked like a No. 2 quarterback. Of late, Joe is beginning to wonder if he even sticks on the roster when teams have to whittle their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. Aug. 27.

That was a tasty late night snack, Joe! Thanks, man.

Joe, does it look like to you that Trask has been a little more consistent on the deep ball than Mayfield (not trying to stir the pot here).

  2. heyjude Says:

    Thank you, Joe. Great tidbits!

Agree about Wolford. Looked so good for awhile. White has been busy running up the middle. Love hearing he now looks angrily going up the middle and runs with a purpose. Good stuff!

  3. garro Says:

Thanks Joe since I refuse to do “social media” because I don’t appreciate the abuses going on with it…X and Facebook both.

    Go Bucs!

  4. Joe Says:

Dunno, haven’t really studying it that intensely because it’s a moot point: Mayfield is the starter. Both have completed their fair share of deep balls. Mayfield didn’t look awful winging it downfield for Trey Palmer or Cade Otton this week.

  5. Joe Says:

Don’t be naive Garro, damn near all media abuse their privilege. MSM might be worse than X or Facebook. They try to claim they are objective. The tech giants don’t.

  6. Marcus Nerone Says:

Q: “Does it look like to you that Trask has been a little more consistent on the deep ball than Mayfield?”

A: “Dunno, haven’t really studying it that intensely because it’s a moot point.”

I heartily disagree. Seeing our backup QB shine, particularly with deep balls which have been the ammo for the haters here who say he has no arm strength, is not moot. It is a very welcome development. We need a good backup QB. It was a good backup QB – Earl Morrall – who won the majority of the games in the Dolphins’ 17-0 season, not the injured Hall of Famer Bob Griese. Plus Wolford is looking terrible so we really, really need Kyle to bring his best and it looks like he is doing it.

It’s moot if the only way the backup gets on the field is if the starter gets hurt.

  8. Robbie Says:

The Traskalites just want him at 2nd and gets some reps in regular season, then he’ll be a starter next season hopefully Atlanta Falcons so he can be reunited with Pitts and the Tampa bay buccaneers never win another division title again, poetic justice for mishandling his career thus far.

  9. KABucs Says:

I get what Marcus is saying. Let’s say Baker misses a handful of games but doesn’t have any kind of devastating injury and Trask can come in and win more than he loses, that could be very, very helpful in keeping a playoff push alive.

  10. drdneast Says:

Robbie, I do believe you nailed it as every Traskite is a cultist, not a Buc fans. They are also very delusional and highly irrational if they think Trask is going to go to Atlanta and jump over Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix to start for the Falcons. Good lord where do these Gator cultists come from.

  11. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

” Kyle Trask with a beautiful pass to Ko Kieft. The Traskites will twist this as Joe writing Baker Mayfield will he cut.”

And the Trask haters will turn it into an interception.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Actually, I picture Trask ending up in a place like Pittsburgh. Seems like that might be a good match. Maybe Raiders?

  13. unbelievable Says:

    Love it! Thanks Joe(s)

  14. Dave Pear Says:

Hilarious. If people really believe that Trashk is the second coming of Dan Marino, or more stupid, that the pros who are charged with millions of dollars for wins keep him down because ……… ? But these are the tards who like to touch heads with horses, so go figure.

  15. Shane Callahan Says:

I wish Mayfield, Trask, Woolford, and the rest of the team the very best. Thanks, Joe!

  16. Chief Says:

By all accounts Baker has been lighting it up. He will end up being a top 5-10 QB this season.

  17. garro Says:

I think maybe you assume I was referring to the abuses of the software folks and not of the users of said software Joe. Not to mention the blatant disregard for my privacy by all involved.

I have taken mandatory anual cyber security training courses and I assure you that “naive” is not among my many faults. I do not use any risky software (I hate to even Googoo stuff) and limit the info I put out there into the ether. No question that the “privelege” of these platforms is being abused however. Tech giants or otherwise.

Either way, Thanks for the extra tidbits for all us Bucs fans.

    Go Bucs!
