John Wolford To Sign With The Panthers

August 30th, 2024

Departed Bucs QB John Wolford.

And just like that the Panthers will have access to a lot of intel on the Buccaneers’ new offense.

The Bucs’ third-string quarterback last year and through 2024 training camp, John Wolford, is about to sign with the Panthers, per various Carolina reporters.

Wolford got banged up in a preseason game this month and the Bucs cut him this week. He didn’t land on the Tampa Bay practice squad, presumably because the Bucs wanted to roll with rookie QB Michael Pratt.

Pratt was cut this week by the Packers after Green Bay drafted him in Round 7. And the Bucs pounced.

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht explained yesterday that he’s had his eyes on Pratt for years.

Of course, the Panthers head coach is Dave Canales, the guy who ran the Bucs offense last season.

Joe might have been a little concerned about what Wolford can tell Canales about the Bucs’ new offense, but the Panthers don’t face the Bucs until December. So it’s almost irrelevant given how much the film will be out there of the Tampa Bay offense and how it will evolve from where it is today.

They want him for what he knows about our new offense. Can’t imagine they want him for his interceptions.

  2. Lt. Dan Says:

Meh..knowing it and defending it are two very different things.

  3. Koala Says:

Nobody needs to worry about what intel the soon-to-be 0-17 panthers gain.

  4. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Lt. Dan, Exactly! The Panthers are one of the worst teams in the NFL right now. Any Intel they get from picking Wolford’s brain won’t be enough for them to beat the Bucs

  5. Kgh4life Says:

Joe is just paranoid or being sarcastic. Players go to in division opponents all the time, the Bucs don’t have anything to be worried about.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

What a disappointment Wolford was. His familiarity with Coen’s offense should have given him a workable advantage. Instead, he went out and completely sucked out loud.

    Canalwater can have him.

  7. Irishmist Says:

Canales needs to find a running game from somewhere.

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

We install the basic offense/schemes. We have individual game planes for the upcoming opponent according to game tape to look for weakness/tendencies. Nothing really Wolford can leak.

  9. Knothead71 Says:

    @Irishmist
Nah, Canales knows exactly what to do. Run it up the gut for no gain on 1st and 2nd down. Daves got this.

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

Just as I predicted, he has so far swiped 5 of our players. AND Canals seemed to get much better in the latter part of last season. It also bears re-mentioning that his team rallied big time to beat the Bills in the preseason. Canals is very sneaky. I don’t trust him to be bad against us this year.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Canales trying to learn about our new offense…..lots of luck stopping it.

  12. unbelievable Says:

Our first game against CAR is not until Dec 1st. There will plenty of tape on our offense at that point.

The only useful thing Wolford will be able to do is play as the scout team QB.

Oh how I wish that was true!
Seems to me, we’ve had one single game plan, week in and week out, for all of the past two seasons. Making us the most predictable club in the league.
Perhaps Coen knows how? Certainly, no-one else from last years coaching staff does.

  14. RagingBrisket Says:

I think we know his ABC offense too and it’s going to be fun breaking it twice this season!
Didn’t we hear the same thing when Jameis went to the shtty Saints?
    Not worried

  15. White Tiger Says:

Good landing spot for Wolford. As this Joe says, by the time Bucs meet Panthers, the offense will have evolved.

This is more about Canales getting someone on the team who understands his offense and can be a benefit to Bryce Young’s development.

I liked Wolford as a back-up, still think he’s a bit too fragile for the NFL.

  16. SB Says:

LOL They want insight???? Typical slimy tactics.

    Of course he did.

    Turncoat Mother *********

  19. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Canales can have Wolford AKA ‘Tiny Tim’

Seriously tho, heady player who can contribute

  20. No Mercy Says:

“Panthers” more like little kitty’s I find it hilarious how Canales is poaching all these players from the Bucs leftovers. If you can beat em, join em?

lol dude it was a preseason game..the Bills had nothing but backups in the game.
Probably none that will ever start a nfl game ever

  22. Simeon4HOF Says:

It’s gonna be funny when the panthers beat the falcons

  23. Drunkinybor Says:

Dave (Tony robbins) Canales at least will have one guy who knows what a offense and especially a running game is supposed to look like.

  24. lambchop Says:

Why are we worried about the Panthers again? C’mon.

  25. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m glad the Bucs got a QB on the practice squad with some upside. I wish Wolford well, Carolina would have to be in a bad spot for him to get any playing time.

  26. BucsGuy Says:

Clearly from his performance in camp and preseason he is not that knowledgeable of the offense

  27. Kenton Smith Says:

The good news- our staff must have confidence that Trask can handle it if Baker should have to sit. The bad news- if Trask is playing we’re one snap away from needing a QB with some experience in this system. It’s hard to see 2 both QBs going down but stuff happens. I think Wolford probably would have worked in a pinch. Hope this seventh rounder is a quick learner.

  28. heyjude Says:

Surprised and not surprised. I actually thought Wolford was hurt, guess not. Sounds like Canales will be doing the same plays he did here. Not worried at all about the Panthers.

  29. FanoftheSouth Says:

Wolford wasn’t picked up to come in and run the offense on game day but to simulate the offense that the Team will be facing in practice.

Panthers have Andy Dalton for another year to backup Young and then Canales might pluck another Free Agent QB he is familiar with to come on over.

Panthers could actually be leading the Division after week 1 with a win over the Saints. 1-0 and the only team with a win in the NFCS.

BTW. Canales isn’t just grabbing Bucs leftovers. He snatched up a CB that coaches like Andy Reid, Jim Harbaugh p, and a few others were hot for.

  30. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey, RagingBrisket. Nice name! A Brisket omelet sounds good this morning! I will go out on a limb and say that Winston is better than Wolford. Not by much, but better.

We shall see what the Panthers have at the end of the season in their wins and losses record. Good Luck to Canales, except when they play us. I have no ill will towards Coach Caneles. He took a job few wanted and worked his best to bring that team success. Another owner saw his passion for coaching and his QB coaching skills, his nonstop positivity, and took a chance on Canales as their new HC. That it is the Panthers, ugh… Same as the Falcons hiring our former HC Raheem Morris. And the Saints bringing in Gruden to help his “former’ QB in Oak/Vegas… As the old saying goes ” If ya can not beat them, join them”, or sign all their castoffs and former coaches.

What I see is the NFC having to go through the NFC SOUTH… Soon to have several NFC South teams that are once again tough to beat and great tune-ups toward the playoffs. NFC South Will be the Division to beat to advance to the Playoffs and the teams that burst other’s playoff bubbles. Yeah, we have a tough division, and so do other NFC South teams. Let us hit somebody into the turf and get back up and hit them again and again and again until they no longer want any of us.

Bring on the Commanders. YaYA! YaYA!, VeA! VeA!, DaviD! DaviD!, KanceY! KanceY! EvanS! EvanS!, GodwiN! GodwiN!, OtteN! OtteN!, WhitE! WhitE! BakeR! BakeR!, Bring it on!

    GO!!!!! BUCS!!!!!

  31. ChiBuc Says:

Apparently Canales only knows how to shop at One(buc) location.

  32. Winny Testaverde Says:

Canales aka El Hornāy is collecting Bucs scraps/leftovers like he did big girls while still being married…chronicled by a book authored! The NFC South rivalries will be more bitter than ever before…Canales…Raheem the bad Dream in ATL, Sewer City Saints because they’re the Saints/Taints. Bring it on…should be a lot of fun.

  33. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Not worried. The Panthers are a football team devoid of talent.

  34. HC Grover Says:

They will need him when The Carolina Shrimp Flops…..LOL

  35. HC Grover Says:

Canales knows he is better than “The Little Feller”.

  36. SlyPirate Says:

    REACTING TO THE PANTHERS
For me, Carolina elicits a similar reaction to a Salteen cracker. I literally never think about them. When you’re forced to engage with them it’s like, “Let’s get this over with and move onto something with relevance.”

  37. Jeffrey Becker Says:

he’s perfect for helping bryce young along. maybe they discovered young needed extra help relative to mayfield and canales is too busy to do it himself

  38. Anyhony Says:

So Joe, you’re saying Canales might learn how to teach run blocking.

  39. Conner50 Says:

    Dave Pear
I thought Wolford was a lock for the second string gig in Tampa? Haha dudes hot garbage like your football takes

  40. orlbucfan Says:

Only team in the South that stacks up against the Bucs may be Atlanta. Canales better get his head out of his rear, and open up his playbook cos he stunk up the planet here. First down: run up the middle
First down: run up the middle
First down: run up the middle
First down: run up the middle
I was ready to tear my hair out with this numbnutts’ play calling. Glad he’s gone. Coen looks like he’s willing to be imaginative. He’s got the talent to do so. Go Tampa Bay!!! As far as the Aints go, they’ll be getting out their voodoo again.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Just wants somewhere there that knows the Canales offense, can help teach Young the offense.

Literally has nothing to do with the Bucs, since, as stated, they don’t even play until December.

From the Bucs side it’s a whatever move. No idea why people like Wolford, he’s not an NFL caliber QB, would be like needing to play Ryan Griffin. If you got that far down the depth chart, the season is over.
