GM Jason Licht Weighs In On New Buccaneer Royce Newman

August 30th, 2024

If you missed it Wednesday, the Bucs have a new offensive lineman with experience.

He’s Royce Newman, who was cut the Packers and claimed on waivers by the Bucs. Newman has not missed a game in his NFL career after the Packers made him a late-fourth-round pick in 2021.

Newman has 24 starts under his belt, most at right guard but he also can play left tackle. And, per Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht’s comments yesterday, Newman can play left tackle, too.

Licht gave a quick breakdown of Newman on The Sick Podcast — Pirate Parlay yesterday.

“I like his playing style,” Licht said. “You know, he’s a high-motor guy just that fits in with the same kinds of guys that we have. He’s a scrappy player. He’s tough. He’s versatile. He can play either guard, he can play right tackle. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’d go out there and hang in there at left tackle, as well. He’s smart. He’s just got the traits that we look for in that O-line. So he’s going to fit in great.”

Joe will add that Newman turned 27 this month.

Joe also wonders where Newman sat on the Bucs’ draft board back in 2021? Tampa Bay chose receiver/returner Jaelon Darden just before Newman and current starting inside linebacker K.J. Britt after the Packers took Newman off the board at No. 142 overall.

  4. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

Versatile depth with actual game experience. Good pickup.

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Think it’s a win for depth on the Oline. Now give Miami a 6th round pick and sign Shaq back at vet minimum for depth at OLB.

  7. BucEmUp Says:

Hopefully he doesn’t shat on his tail Dave ….. if so, do NOT xtrain him at C

That’s why you stick to your board Jason; Have to LOL at all the Darden hype before that season started

    @Dave Pear
Dave Pear was my first favorite Buc in 1976 when we drove over from Winter Haven to attend very cheap regular season games.

  11. Dave Pear Says:

IrishT — Dave Pear was like the 4th Buc I became aware of after Saint Lee Roy Selmon (we all got robbed when he passed away), Dewey, and Spurrier.

He was talented and had a personality, and apparently isn’t doing so well because the NFL does a shamefully disgraceful job of caring for its old timer vets.

So I grabbed him for my handle. Thanks for mentioning the real DP!

  12. Kenton Smith Says:

Dave Pear thank you for mentioning two of the three Selmon brothers. Small town Oklahoma boys who were sure raised right. Buc4evr you’re right this Newman adds depth but I think this GM also likes to push the competition and that’s also what he’s doing. He’s gonna make sure Bredeson and Mauch aren’t too comfortable just yet. I like his style.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Good pass blocker, terrible run blocker.
Thats why the pack cut him

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

Of course, we will definitely be a pass first team, so he will be a better fit with us than he was with the pack.
Mayfield will love him, White will hate him

  15. Larrd Says:

I thought maybe Dave was just pear-shaped.

Who knew he was a fan?

    LOL!

  16. Bucs4EverMore Says:

Should Add Security and Depth to the O Line. Another Positive Step for A Great Run!

  17. Destinjohnny Says:

We have a stud center and badass left tackle
Think the rest in a tad below average.

  18. Stanglassman Says:

Detroit Lions got LB Derrick Barnes and
AMON-RA ST. BROWN in that 2021 fourth round. That was before the Bucs picked Darden. Bucs round 2 Trask Round 3 Hainsey.
Amon-Ra is one of my favorite non bucs player. Can you image having him in our WR room.

  19. Stanglassman Says:

Destin-Luke the lifter is one of the best RTs in the league and getting better. 25th tackle overall by PFF he ranked eighth among right tackles in pass blocking grade (72.5).

  20. orlbucfan Says:

I’ll take Ungodly CD14 over Amon-Ra anytime. The Bucs’ Dave Pear was a class act on some really stinkeroo teams, on-field and off. The one on here? Whatever.
