Jason Licht On Dixie Chicks Lovefest

August 29th, 2024

Doesn’t appear too petrified about Kirk Cousins.

The sudden slurping of Kirk Cousins confuses Joe.

Just a few short months ago, the mere mention of Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins elicited snickering and outright laughter from NFL analysts near and far for his inability to win prime time games, never mind whiffing in all but one playoff start.

Now all of a sudden Cousins, after suffering a blown Achilles no less, is supposed to come to Atlanta, play on turf, and lead the Dixie Chicks to an NFC South crown.

Meanwhile the Bucs, a three-time NFC South defending champ, bolstered by two strong drafts, are yesterday’s news? Even with the hated Baker Mayfield who has twice as many playoff wins and beating the great Cousins in his home crib last year?

Joe just ain’t buying it. And it seems neither is Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. Asked about all the love from the NFL universe jumping on Cousins’ bandwagon predicting Atlanta to dethrone the Bucs, Licht had a pithy reaction yesterday at One Buc Palace.

“That’s great,” Licht said with a broad smile.

Message sent.

Yeah, Licht is feeling pretty good about his Bucs’ chances at a four-peat. And why not? It’s not like Atlanta signed Tom Brady.

Please keep underestimating…we got this. Jason knows how….look at our strong drafts 🙂

  2. Truth be Told Says:

Isn’t the media wrong about everything all the while pushing their own narrative? Let’s get Baked! Go Bucs

  3. Crickett Baker Says:

I noticed that Orr guy (the one Jason embarrassed when he said we were going to win 2 games last year) is now saying nice things about the Bucs. He is such a brown nose.

  4. SB Says:

    Subterfuge!!
    LFG!!

  5. SB Says:

Cousins W/ Jefferson is > than Cousins with London?
    Stretch imo.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

    Excellent. Love it.

It would be great if no verbose pontiffs decided to give the usual “suggestions.”

I agree with you the Cousins hasn’t done well in the playoffs. But they are predicting that he will take a team full of talent over the top to win the division. That’s got nothing to do with playoff performance. I just think the Bucs are better than the national media realize. Atlanta may have improved too. We will see if it was enough but I doubt it.

  8. Paul Says:

SB says “Cousins W/ Jefferson is > than Cousins with London? Stretch imo.”

And how did Cousins perform WITHOUT Jefferson last season. He carved up the 49ers defense on Monday Night Football and then took care of the Packers the next week.

Kirk has been making his receivers look good for years. He’s had two 1000 yard receivers in Washington and had two 1000 yard receivers for multiple years in Minnesota.

Ever since he became a starter, he’s connected with his receivers and they’ve balled out. After Jefferson got injured, he turned the rookie Addison into an immediate starter as he would have easily had a 1000+ yards had Cousins not gotten injured

  9. Paul Says:

Cousins far outplayed Mayfield. The rest of team didn’t do their job…dumb penalties by the defense, etc etc.

    Cousins’ stats:
    33 of 44 for 344 yards, 75% completion rate, 2 TD, 1 INT.

Meanwhile, Mayfield was mid as usual…
    21 of 34 for 173 yards, 61.8% completion rate, 2 TD, 0 INT.

And it was Brady that got TWO of those NFC South division title. That info was conveniently left out. Brady isn’t playing anymore. The Bucs barely had a winning record last season which was the same as the Saints’ record. So don’t get it twisted that the Bucs were some powerhouse team.

  10. Kenton Smith Says:

Let’s see Paul. So Cousins was starting like his 80th game for the Vikings. Mayfield was starting his 1st game for the Bucs. At Minnesota. Hmm. “And it was Brady that got Two of those NFC South division titles.” Paul, players don’t win titles. Teams do. I’d prefer folks would not keep using these stats that can be manipulated. Just Facts. The Bucs beat the Vikings last year. Really pretty simple stuff. They beat the Packers last year. They beat the Bears last year. Only team in that “Powerful “ division we didn’t beat is the Lions. Those are the facts. I’m really gonna enjoy the Lions game in a couple weeks.

Cousins has been in the NFL 12 years, Baker only a half dozen. Baker has been moved in six years to multiple teams, coaches, playbooks. Being his 2nd year at the Bucs, he is much more comfortable. Baker will do even better this season.

Cousins has never won a SB in 12 years. He is not perfect. Yes, he is a nice mentor in the locker room, seems like a good guy. However, he isn’t Tom Brady in the NFL. Cousins has only won one playoff game in his entire career, 1 out of 4. If the Falcons don’t start winning, Penix will be the QB. I am more worried about him.

Kirk Cousins record against winning teams: 16-47.

  15. HC Grover Says:

The division will come down to 1 game diff.

  16. Fan of the South Says:

Baker Boi’s would be quick to defend Lil B with the “Look at the Coaches he played For” argument. Cousins had Jay Gruden who’s only claims to fame are success with the Orlando Predators and was his brother got him a spot as an assistant on a Super Bowl team. Then there was the end of the Mike Zimmer experiment @ the Vikings where resources were poured into Defense and the Offense was neglected.

Vikings were gaining traction under O’Connell and Cousins and the Vikings would have led the league in Offense baring the Achilles. Offense was set and the defense was starting to Hum under Flores.

Now Kirk is in the Bucs back yard with a Head Coach that not only can build a killer defense but has a Great sense of and experience in the Offensive side of the ball.

Bucs were fortunate to catch Cousins in week 1 of 2023 while he was shaking off the rust and not week 5 when he threw for almost 300 yards and 2 TD’s against the Reigning Super Bowl Champs while losing his sharpest weapon in the 1st quarter.

Anyone that believes that the Bucs are going to roll over the Falcons in 2024 are living in a fantasy.

Week 5 is going to be a Defensive Battle like in the Old Black and Blue Division and even 3 FG’s might be hard to come by.

  17. Razor Ramone Says:

Achilles injuries are tough to overcome. Penix might add a wrinkle. We’ll see. Go Bucs!!!

    HEY, Truth be Told,

“Isn’t the media wrong about everything all the while pushing their own narrative? Let’s get Baked! Go Bucs”

It depends on what “Truth” is. Those with “Facts” or those with “Alternative Facts”. One is “Truth” and the other one ain’t.

You Tell them, Jason!!! And even did it with a SMILE!!~!!

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  19. stpetebucfan Says:

I get the interest in how other folks feel about the Bucs. But personally I LOVE all the disrespect!!!

How big is the chip on Baker’s shoulder now? The rest of the team, coaches and obviously the GM.

I LOVE the motivation as opposed to the overconfidence that can sometimes exist when teams get their praise. See the Bucs post SB until last year.

@ Fan of the South Says

They also had Kyle Shanahan, Mike McDaniel, Sean McVay, Bobby Slowik and Matt LaFleur on their staff.

  21. Joe Says:

Achilles injuries are tough to overcome. Penix might add a wrinkle. We’ll see.

“This Joe” is convinced if Cousins struggles out of the gate, that Atlanta fanbase will be screaming for Michael Penix.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

    WHO MADE WHO?

    2020: 1400, 2021: 1600, 2022: 1800

Those are Justin Jeffersons’ annual receiving yards. Cousins threw for over 4k each healthy year with Jefferson on the team. How’d Cousins do before JJ?

Cousins threw for a pedestrians 3600 yards his first year in MIN (No JJ). It took Cousins 4 years to get ramped up to 4k in WAS.

    2 Big Questions for ATL:
    1) Who’s JJ’s equivalent on ATL?
    2) How long does it take for Cousins to dial it in?

  23. Bradinator Says:

Cousins is a game manager who had an excellent WR core to throw to. Drake London is NOT Justin Jefferson, and that TE that was awesome at Florida? He’s an underachiever. They have a good run game, and not much of an O-line. We will stuffing the run. They do not frighten me. Cousins never won anything.
