Jason Licht Doesn’t Want To Send A Message, Despite Sending A Message
August 28th, 2024“Hey you. Yeah, you. You third stringer, you. That’s right. You better mind your P’s and Q’s on the field or you may not be here next week. But please don’t take that the wrong way. All good?”
That seemed to be the non-message message Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht floated today at One Buc Palace.
In what Joe suspects will be Licht’s final news conference until after the Super Bowl, Licht said the Bucs’ roster, as it currently stands, is not locked in and that he has a wandering eye like Joe when Joe is near the Bucs cheerleaders. Only Licht has eyes for talent of a different sort: NFL players.
But please, Licht added, Bucs players shouldn’t take that the wrong way.
Next week, Licht said, the 53-man roster might be different than it is today.
“It’s still fluid,” Licht said of the roster. “To be quite frank, you never know. We have our eye — we always have our eye on other players. We always have our eyes on other players.”
Players “may or may not be on the team tomorrow,” Licht added. “I’m not trying to send a message.”
Licht didn’t have to. He just spoke the clear, unvarnished truth.
Teams are always looking for upgrades. If someone the Bucs really liked, for example, in the draft suddenly becomes available and the Bucs sign him, that means someone else has to go.
That’s life in the NFL for backups. Live day-to-day, game-to-game, week-to-week. As Raheem Morris famously said when he was Bucs coach, “I will tolerate you until I can replace you.”
And if you are a backup in the NFL, unless you are a world class special teams player, you are replaceable.
Licht may not have been purposely sending a message. But he sure issued a reminder.

looks like the practice squad is all but set now…at least for now…
probably resign walton to the ps as well, as spots are down to maybe 1 or possibly 2 left now

I think all players are very well aware of this and if you don’t have the talent to be a solid second stringer, your third string lives could be over at any minute. All the players that work their way up and actually become starters at some point, they’re the goal for these young guys. They are all holding on to that dream, and not everybody will make it.

Good interview with the media. Loved what Jason had to say, and everything is definitely fluid. Can’t wait for the next surprise.
Happy with Pratt. And he grew up on the other coast!

On that note, the Bucs just waived T Brandon Walton and signed Royce Newman at guard from the Packers waiver wire

I definitely hope we can keep Thompson and Miller on the practice squad.
Was surprised to see us keep only 5 recievers but 4 tight ends.
I haven’t seen enough of K. Johnson to be sure of his hands and ability to catch contested or small window throws. Hell, I haven’t seen enough of that from Palmer to feel confident.
Great that they’re both speedsters but we need receivers who can track the ball and go get it 1st and foremost.

Radio Lol

Jeffs, don’t knock the radio, please. That’s the only way (in AR) I get most Buccs games.

Lol we did claim Pratt. Another former Packer. Heard about him on local radio. Apparently he didn’t show anything in camp/preseason for GB. I know we picked Culp instead of them. Glad it seemed to work out.

He’s not trying to send a message it’s just the nature of the business and In this business your tape is the resume. Unlike us their employer can continue looking for their replacement. Even if you’ve been one of the best the company has ever had they can cut you rather than pay you after all your years of service. They money you make is worth it though
