Jameis Winston Talks Vision Issues In Tampa

August 16th, 2024

Jameis Winston opens up.

So the Bucs paid their quarterback $20.9 million in 2019 knowing he had impaired vision.

Now that’s something to ponder over a couple of cold beers at your local Hooters.

It’s almost inconceivable. Why didn’t Bucco Bruce Arians arrive in Tampa and order then-QB Jameis Winston to use glasses or goggles, or have corrective surgery?

And where was Team Glazer in this? Team Glazer ordered Arians to get a comprehensive physical at a local hospital in order to get the head coaching job in 2019, and Joe can assure you Arians was earning a lot less than Jameis.

Irony of ironies … Team Glazer’s decades-old vision foundation is devoted to providing eye exams and glasses to children.

As Bucs fans know well, as do their mental health counselors, Jameis threw 33 touchdowns and a ridiculous 30 interceptions in 2019 and wasn’t re-signed as the Bucs landed Tom Brady in March of 2020. Jameis signed with the Saints and proceeded to have Lasik surgery to correct his vision soon after.

Joe brings this up today because Jameis joined The Pat McAfee Show this week and talked about that surgery and how it helped him on the football field.

“It really helped me out with my depth perception,” Jameis said. “… It really impacted my game just in terms of seeing the depth of linebackers. I didn’t find pressures sooner and just process[ing] the information really fast. …

“I wasn’t blind, Pat, but I’ll tell you what, Lasik is definitely a game-changer. Just the fact I was able to like actually read a stop sign that was clear, read the street signs without using Apple Maps or Google Maps.

Yes, Joe knows Jameis was a squinter in college and his imperfect vision was well known to all. But as most nearsighted people know, the condition rarely improves on its own and often deteriorates in your 20s and 30s.

How diligent were the Bucs in evaluating Jameis’ vision annually? Had team officials defined what they were willing to tolerate while consulting with opthalmologists?

Of course, it all worked out in the end. The Bucs won a Super Bowl and have never missed Jameis. But it’s hard for Joe not to wonder what might have been — in all directions — if the Bucs had insisted their quarterback have perfect or near-perfect vision.

And that includes what Mike Evans’ numbers might look like now if his quarterback could read defenses more quickly.

Doesn’t Leftwich look like he’s screaming in that photo? Almost appears like BA was the voice of reason in that one.

  2. matthew a veal Says:

these are professional athletes. they are responsible for their own bodies. if the guy didnt do something he should have, why blame someone else.

and what other team would want this – either clueless or bad mouth.

there isnt going to be a championship in this guy’s future. i dont see the what if argument holding water.

  3. LVMYBUCS Says:

Sure and several years later he still sucks

  4. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Impaired vision and impaired judgment.

  5. kaimaru Says:

He didn’t have lasik because stated in an interview he should be at least 25 before having the surgery. He also said he doesn’t wear contacts as “what happens if I lose on?” Uh maybe put on a new contact on the sidelines? Why he wouldn’t wear goggles? I think he felt he would look like a dork or something

  6. Drunkinybor Says:

    Excuses excuses

  7. Donnyd Says:

There isn’t many people who wanted Jameis more then I did back then. As a long suffering Bucs fan in need of a franchise QB, i really hoped he’d be the one. We as Bucs fans have be
en craving a franchise QB, especially us who have been fans since 1976 (and are still alive). It was so awesome to get Tommy and win another Super Bowl with the team Jameis couldn’t win with bc he couldn’t f’n see. I don’t wish any bad on him, well as a slimy Ain’t I did (how’d that blown out knee feel from Tampa Jameis, did you see that coming). I kind of hope he beats out Watson just bc . And yes Joe, what would have Mike Evens put up with a Brady for all those years or a QB who could see.
Buccaneers fans anyone remember Vinny Testaverde? Our franchise QB who was color blind? Let’s pray to the football God’s that Baker has 20/20 vision. Go Bucs!

  8. Larrd Says:

Joe Flacco led the Browns to the playoffs last year. I wonder if Jameis could do the same?

  9. orlbucfan Says:

The 2020 Buccaneers were the best team on both sides of the ball in their history. Unfortunately, the only weak spot was Jameis. You could have replaced him with Brad Johnson, Baker Mayfield, etc. and the team still would have won their second SB. They sure didn’t need all the drama Methusaleh Brady brought with him. As it turned out, the wrinkle only played two decent seasons for the team.

  10. J McCosh Says:

Hard to believe that Jameis “was a squinter in college” and the Bucs didn’t have an ophthalmologist evaluate him on day one. Damn, we really can’t do anything right on the quarterback development front.

  11. Will Says:

Lol not a Jameis apologist BUT lets not say Brady did it with the same team.
There was no Wirfs, AB, Fournette, or Gronk. Non of the guys that Jameis had scored a TD in that Superbowl.

  12. Hodad Says:

The real problem was his eyeballs were connected to his brain!

  13. Half_Sac Says:

More Proof that James is an idiot

  14. View from 132 Says:

It is strange to me that for all the billions at stake there aren’t league wide required medical tests of all kinds. Why leave stuff like this to the teams? His depth perception should’ve been flagged and the union should require it be treated before he took the field. It should be about maximizing a player’s opportunity.

  15. Oddball Says:

    Hindsight is 20/20….

    Too easy

  16. Dave Pear Says:

That surgery did wonders for JaMiss and helped him become a playoff winning quarterback. Oh, wait.

Well, it helped him become a starter. Oh, wait.

Well at least he could beat out Taysom Hill for the backup job in New Orleans. Oh, wait.

Well at least now he’s giving his incoherent speeches to Browns before they go 5-12.

    Laughable.

  17. BubbaBuc Says:

He faked it. He only used it as an excuse. Look at his reaction for each touchdown pass and each interception. He squints when it doesn’t workout. I’m a big FSU fan and was excited when the Bucs got Winston, but he’s a bust.

  18. Esteban85 Says:

The dude got his eyes fixed but he still isn’t good enough to get a starting gig anywhere despite being a #1 overall pick.

  19. Joe Says:

There was no Wirfs, AB, Fournette, or Gronk. Non of the guys that Jameis had scored a TD in that Superbowl.

    Fun fact:

Not one of the Bucs’ points scored, not one touchdown was thrown by a former Jameis teammate in that Super Bowl win. They were all free agents.

So when you hear someone claim you can’t win a Super Bowl with free agents, may want to tell them to check themselves.

(Yes, Joe knows the core of that team was homegrown.)

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

Again no one cared about the running game when he was the quarterback. People on here didn’t care about the running game until Brady came and now Baker. Jamies was asked to do more than most young quarterbacks back then and even now. I remember hearing what’s a best friend to a quarterback is his running game. Now that was for every young quarterback back then and even now . Jamies was the only quarterback that was supposed to win without a running game, O line defense and a kicker. The national meadi pushed a narrative about Jamies and the fan base bought it. My only thing about Jamies that I hated was he let those coaches ruined his career by being a coach boy instead of playing his game. I remember in 2018 when he said I’m just going to play my game and in the last 6 games of the season he had 11 TD and 3 picks and one of them was a hail marry . Then he went right back trying to be what I call a coach boy with BA and it ruined him . That’s why Gruen ask him are done being a boble head running plays that you know ain’t going to work at the time. And told if you wouldn’t have listened to those coaches you would still be in Tampa. Jamies is a prime example to all rookies play your game stop being such a coach boy because at the end of the day they’re going to blame you not the coaches. Lost 1 game in college and didn’t start losing until he came to the bucs just like all the rest of the quarterbacks the bucs drafted.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

Esteban85. It’s called politics with Jamies we had a top 5 offense every year he was the quarterback and that’s without a running game or a good defense to close out games. Plus the division was much harder remember if you a real fan Cam Newton was the MVP and they were 15-1 and played in the Superbowl. The next year Matt Ryan was the MVP and played in a super bowl and let’s not forget playing against Drew Brees a hall of famer and the saints defense. Verses Desmond Ritter, Derick Carr and a rookie quarterback Brice Young. Baker wouldn’t have stand a chance against the NFC south back then regardless how they never gave our division credit. Just think since 2015 the NFC south played in the most Superbowls then any other division in football.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Surprise, a JaMiss article and Otard comes in and has AI write 7014 words of blubber about being unfairly treated and all, meanwhile Bucs haven’t missed the playoffs since JaMiss was shown the door and JaMiss can barely hold onto the job of clipboard holder.

    Conspiracy! Right Otard? Nevermind.

  23. BuxfaninTX Says:

He has no issues spotting the crab legs at Publix….. or that Uber driver’s mysterious lady parts..

  24. It's Corn Says:

I seem to recall that many doctors would recommend against Lasik before a certain age of the patient. Not sure if that was a factor.

  25. Jmarkbuc Says:

There has to be a Testaverde color blind joke in here somewhere..

  26. RVATom Says:

The Bucs and QBs with eye sight issues. Vinnie was color blind? Jameis was near sighted? The Yucs at their finest.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

Vision is pretty far down the list of things that made Winston a subpar QB.

  28. Mike C Says:

Oneilbuc, you have a sickness bro lololololololol

  29. Buctooth buc Says:

He’s a joke. Why didn’t he wear goggles. Some of the best sports players wore goggles, Moses Malone, Kareem, James Worthy, Kurt Rambis, Eric Dickerson, Chuck Muncie. He’s just bitter. I really wanted him to succeed and was a big fan of his. Now wish he would just go away after those comments.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Notice the only times the Otard turns on her tard-voice-to-text translator is when the subject of Bucs QB comes up, so she can revisit all of her grievances, 90% of which are about the unfair treatment of Mr Turnover Machine, JaMiss Winstoofew.

Forget Bucs have a Lombardi, three consecutive division titles and a promising roster most coaches would kill to inherit. Forget that the winning correlates perfectly with Winstoofew’s unceremonious dumping. LOL.

Keep on tarding it up, Otard. You go, girl!

  31. Saskbucs Says:

Never understood this then and Winston talking about that on a public platform is embarrassing. Embarrassing for him and for the Bucs. As someone said, contact lenses buddy. Beginning of camp you hand 5 spare sets to the trainer and forget about it. Ludicrous, if true, that a guy would be out there with even slightly fuzzy vision. I know it’s normal to you at the time but people would tell you.

  32. Pickgrin Says:

In his first full season as a starter (1988) Vinny Testaverde threw 35 Interceptions

When news broke a couple years later that Vinny was colorblind… everyone kind of nodded their head and said something like…’Yea – That makes sense…’

  33. Joe Says:

So Jameis has selective eyesight problems?

Did anyone hear Jameis complain about his eyesight when he was throwing for over 4,000 yards in a season (once 5,000)?

But his eyesight turned bad when he threw picks?

What, is this guy Tommy Pham whose eyesight changes by the hour?

  34. Aaron Says:

He started off with a pick in the NFL lol Saints didn’t even want him

  35. Jmarkbuc Says:

The Bucs have picked a quarterback in the first round twice in their history.

Both times it was the #1 overall pick.

Both times they selected QBs with vision problems. Amazing.

  36. SenileSenior Says:

My impression was that Winston was uncoachable at the NFL level. True or false?

I wanted him to succeed as a Buc. I have no ill will toward him. Too bad, though.

  37. Dave Pear Says:

So, Gruden wasn’t afraid to chew someone a new orefice. BA was happy to ingest someone’s spleen.

Bucs won super bowls with them both.

Looks like Coen is unafraid to digest someone’s throat cartilidge.

Earth to Todd – maybe holding your players accountable isn’t really a bad idea after all……

  38. Beejezus-belt Says:

Hmm, bad eyesight and Jameis threw 33 TDs, but corrective surgery and the kid can’t even sniff the field. Wow think about that.

  39. Dave Pear Says:

Good vision is different from good eyesight. Obviously JaMiss has always and will always lack the former.

  40. Pickgrin Says:

    Jmarkbuc Says:
The Bucs have picked a quarterback in the first round twice in their history.

Both times it was the #1 overall pick.
    ——————————————————————————

    2009 – Rd 1 – #17 – Josh Freeman

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. I know the truth hurts but name one person on here other than a few of us was saying how bad the running game is back then? None of y’all cared about the running game until Brady came here and that’s a fact. And now it’s a excuse for Baker Mayfield. Jamies played in a much harder NFC south so what I said is the truth. With Jamies the bucs won 9 games and still didn’t make the playoffs. With Baker they won 9 games and we won the whole division that’s a fact. I think you’re the one sick bro lol . Every thing I said was the truth we were a top 5 offense every year he was here and without a running game for 4 of his years. That’s a proven fact!! And yes it’s a lot of these coaches ruined these young quarterback look at Justin Fields in Chicago or Any quarterback the Jets drafted or the bucs. You can’t keep blaming players when a franchise has never developed a quarterback. And yes these quarterbacks are stupid to listen to some of these coaches. Look at Andy Reid every quarterback he touch became a good or hall of fame quarterback.

  42. Cobraboy Says:

Excuse me, but ATM was a millionaire full grown man while a Buc.

Why did HE not do something for HIS vision? HE is 100% responsible for HIS vision, not anybody else.

Dude us just a bone head.

    Jeez…

  43. Cobraboy Says:

@SenileSenior: I lost total respect for that brainiac when he specifically ignored his coach’s order and scored a late game TD when the Saints were ahead.

I do not care if his action benefitted a teammate.

He ain’t the coach. He is a player. Players take orders from coaches.

  44. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Amen Cobra.

  45. heyjude Says:

I think most of us always wondered why he looked like a deer in headlights looking down the field. And that seemed to be for a very long time. Glad he got the Lasik and he feels it helped him.

Jameis was nearsighted and everyone knew that at the time. He did have a visor. I don’t remember him ever wearing contacts or glasses on the field. Possibly goggles… There is so much to all of this.

I like Jameis and was hoping the best for him. However, since the Lasik, he hasn’t been a number one QB. He is still playing though. So coaches are seeing something in him.

Thinking, if it doesn’t work well at the Browns that Jameis would do very well with Canales at the Panthers. Thinking they are a good match. Jameis is great with motivational statements. Solemnly, can you imagine all the inspirational quotes from Jameis and Canales…

  46. garro Says:

Wasn’t this reported before and questioned? Seems like Déjà vu all over again Yogi. Seem to remember he lost a contact once.

    Go Bucs!

  47. Florida Cat Says:

He was lucky, i had 20/15 vision and saw every broken play and forced int for his tenure with the Bucs. Thanks for nothing Crab Legs

  48. J McCosh Says:

So neither FSU nor the Bucs took steps to correct the vision of the one player who needs sweeping vision of the field more than any other player? You can’t make this stuff up.

  49. J McCosh Says:

Oneilbuc Says: “Look at Andy Reid every quarterback he touched became a good or Hall of Fame quarterback.”

Yup … Favre (Green Bay) … McNabb (Philadephia) … Mahomes (Kansas City) … Missing anyone?

  50. bucnjim Says:

It’s really simple when it comes to Winston. Decision making>Vision

  51. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Pearbrain, is Otard your new slur for me? Read my entire comment, you-know-what for brains.

  52. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cobraboy: I agreed on the phony Victory Formation. Only a D-Bag would do that.

  53. Joe in Michigan Says:

    * I agree

  54. DBS Says:

Oral if you could read you would know he was talking to OneilBuc. Of course anyone that wants to slur Brady, the QB that knew how to bring this fan base and franchise another Super Bowl deserves what he gets.

  55. DoooshLaRue Says:

Sadly, I admit to having had a vision problem when it came to JayMiss being a lifelong Buc.

    I just couldn’t see it.
    🥁

  56. Mike C Says:

Oneilbuc, didn’t read your trash post, you and your opinion are garbage.

  57. Cobraboy Says:

I am convinced oneill IS ATM.

  58. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I won’t lie…Winston’s comment on stop signs struck home with me. I see them fine, but street name signs are blurry as heck without my glasses, and I use to have 20-20.

Maybe I should look into Lacic.

  59. Bowles4President Says:

Why are we assuming that Jamie’s is telling the whole story and that the Bucs didn’t try to get him to wear glasses, contacts, get lasic, etc.?
Has Jamie’s earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to telling the whole story?

You know what they say when you assume things…

  60. Dave Pear Says:

Otard is the bot claiming to be Irish O’Neil. Sorry you’re butthurt orlbuc , lately I find myself agreeing with you. Must be the drugs.

  61. Piratic 2.0 Says:

Imagine if he could have actually see the scoreboard, seen the game clock or known the down & distance?

  62. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. You have opinions every thing I brought up can be proven go look at the stats back then with our running game. And I can care less what you read or don’t read from me. Lol 🤣🤣

  63. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave Pear. I’m black and I’m proud and I know people like you hate it !! 😁😁😁😂

  64. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave Pear. Let me say it loud I’m black and I’m proud!!!

  65. SB~LV Says:

    😂
    Jamyth’s problems rhyme with vision
    Decisions …

  66. Rod Munch Says:

Jameis has the same vision issues as I do – and at his age, I didn’t really know it was an issue. The poor depth perception can be a real pain – for me it would just be pulling out into traffic in that things often looked closer than they really did so I’d end up hesitating when I had plenty of time. I also would squint, but never realized I needed glasses or anything because while things might not be crystal clear, they didn’t look completely out of focus either. It wasn’t until I was getting closer to 30, when driving at night, with all the star bursts that got bigger and bigger, that I started to realize something was off and I decided to get it checked out. Still, when I got glasses, I only ever used them for driving – I’m not sure on a football field it would really change much, but then again when you’re talking about the super athletes and insane reaction times of NFL players, even the slightest disadvantage could be a thing.

At the same time, shut the f up with the fake news bs. The Bucs all-time QB rankings are 1. Brady, 2. Winston.

I’d take Winston every day of the week over the midget currently hampering the offense to finish in the 20s in scoring.

  67. Dave Pear Says:

I can’t read gibberish, Otard. Maybe your tard-voice-to-text app needs to be updated , not sure. Meanwhile have a Guinness for health.

  68. Dave Pear Says:

I also find Irish girls to be attractive, regardless of the color of their skin.

  69. SB~LV Says:

Dave Pear 😂😂😂 voice-tard -text app
    😂😂😂
    I am stealing this!

  70. Mike C Says:

Obviously you do care as you directed a post to ME….. ,but I won’t waste time reading your tired brain rot arguments, the records speak for themselves.

  71. Bucsfan Says:

JW has an all time passer rating of 87.0 putting him ahead of Brett Favre,Dan Marino, and Eli Manning and ranked 42 all time in NFL history. After he went to New Orleans he sat behind Brees as he should have in 2020 , but became the starter in 2021 and went 5-2 in the games he started until his season was ended due to injury on an illegal horse collar tackle by Devin White. I never saw a lack of effort on Jameis part at anytime during his tenure with the Bucs and though things did not turn out as well as JW or fans would have liked , all this PETTY namecalling smacks of a word that starts with R and ends in ISM and it aint realism. I wish JW well unless he is playing my Bucs.

  72. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. Good because I again I don’t follow the media narratives like you do I look at the game for myself. Most of y’all are meadi sheeps who believes everything that comes out of their mouths . I think for myself I don’t let people think for me like you a Dave queer do .

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave queer. I know you can’t read are understand truth you the biggest coward on this site. Lol 🤣🤣 you one of those insecure man that probably never could get women. Lol 🤣🤣 you a coward you wouldn’t say none of the stuff you say to people on here in their face. Shut up and go stand in a corner I control you and you’re emotion.

  74. Mike C Says:

True story, Was at a Bucs home game, (like always) game was about to start and I stood up pulled a 20 out if my pocket and said “I bet 20 dollars 3 throws a pick the first play of the game” literally any thing else they get my 20, a pick I win 20 off them. Not one person in my packed section was willing to take the bet. P.S. he threw a pick the first play of the game.

  75. P2dabeast Says:

Jameis is a prime example of why the Glazers do their vision program. You don’t know what you don’t know. Poor and disadvantaged kids don’t know they have poor vision or learn to adapt to the vision deficit. Jameis didn’t realize until after lasik how bad his vision situation was for the majority of his life.

  76. DoooshLaRue Says:

At the same time, shut the f up with the fake news bs. The Bucs all-time QB rankings are 1. Brady, 2. Winston.

I’d take Winston every day of the week over the midget currently hampering the offense to finish in the 20s in scoring.
    ________

So Fancy Man, you’re impressed by the fact that JayMiss is #2 on the all-time list of Buc’s QBs “greats?”
That’s like thinking the smartest kid on the short bus is Einstein.

Of course you do realize that we, as a team, have the lowest all-time win percentage in the NFL at 40.6%?
Brady in decline at the end of his career, came here and set team records in just 3 years.

Anywho, your boy, your savior JayMiss, continues to dwell at the bottom of NFL rosters.
I do give you a lot of credit though, you certainly stand by your man.
    🥰
No one can deter your love and admiration for the Squinting BS Messiah from Bessemer, Alabama!

  77. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Oh,

Que the Matt Gay and defense excuses in 3-2-1…..

  78. LD Says:

The only thing this turnover machine was good at was thievery. Sorry ass excuses from an overpaid bum.

  79. Joe in Michigan Says:

There were two guys that were so bad (at times) that I wondered if they had money on the opposing team: Jameis and Devin White. Glad they’re gone.

  80. Oneilbuc Says:

Doosh . At least their true how many excuses are you going to give Baker Mayfield? I know it’s a new offense, it’s Todd Bowles fault, it’s the running game fault, it’s the o line fault, it’s the OC fault and it’s the defense fault lol 🤣🤣 watch and see. Jamies is gone it’s Baker time you know the one who never gets blamed for nothing oh I forgot one more he’s hurt excuse . Baker plays in a much weaker division than Jamies had to play in and that’s a fact . And it still took all 17 games and Antoin Winfield Jr and our kicker who got us to the playoffs last year but to you and the rest of you Baker fan boys Baker lead us to the playoffs. Lol 🤣🤣

  81. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave queer. Yeah we won 3 division title 2 of them was with a 8-9 and 9-8 record and one of them we had a freaking all star team. That ain’t nothing to brag about lol 🤣🤣 !! That’s why to me it’s NFC Championship or bust but I see you wouldn’t mind if the bucs go 7-10 or 8-9 those are good records for you! Lol 🤣🤣

  82. DoooshLaRue Says:

    OhKneelz,

You’re omnipotent NFL insight is only surpassed by your superior grammar and punctuation.
I don’t consider myself a Baker Fanboy but I like his attitude and I think he gives us a good chance to win.
He’s not perfect and I expect he’ll have a rough stretch or two this season.
Hopefully he stays healthy, but if not, I think Trask might surprise some people.

But man, I shorely do miss your boy JayMiss at the podium on Mondays flapping his gums and thankin da lawd and say he need to be playin betta…..and he jus blessed to be here.
    😀

  83. Oneilbuc Says:

Doosh . Jamies ain’t my boy Baker is your boy but just like I said you will be giving Baker Mayfield every excuse in the world if he play like he did last year and as far as gramer goes I’m tying off my phone so mistakes happens and it ain’t that deep. Lol 🤣🤣 I don’t lose one dollar if a error happens!!

  84. D-Rome Says:

Jay-Miss was given EVERYTHING to succeed in Tampa as a starting QB in the NFL. He got LASIK and was given opportunities to succeed elsewhere. He’s still a backup. Players love him and he’s quite the character for sure, but this team was not going to win with him. In 2021 when he started 7 games for the Saints he only completed 59% of his passes and this was after LASIK.

  85. Booger Says:

I haven’t read a single one of these comments, but just wanted to say that the Bucs knew it when they drafted him… It was an issue that was brought up going back to his Floduh State days, with him very noticeably ‘squinting’ during games, especially while looking over to the sidelines, when getting to next play call in.

  86. Booger Says:

But, WHY he never got it fixed or wear glasses or SOMETHING, just absolutely, always blew my mind. I couldn’t understand it. It never made any sense to me. I actually thought he eventually did… guess not!? Unbelievable.
