Jaguars Views Of Work Against Bucs

August 15th, 2024

To no one’s surprise, Jaguars reporters were on scene yesterday for the Bucs-Jags joint practice in Jacksonville and had different, non-Bucs perspectives on the action.

The perfect example is below.

Look at the Twitter video of a clear drop by Mike Evans, who had two hands on the perfectly thrown ball in the end zone. The Jags reporter, Demetrius Harvey, saw it as a win for Jags cornerback Tyson Campbell.

Travis Holmes of BigCatCountry.com wondered allowed why the Bucs’ pass rush was so devastating yesterday. So did Carlos Sanches of BlackAndTeal.com.

  • Can the OL protect the QB? While the periods are not live, and no contact is allowed on the QBs, many of the Jaguars offense’s bigger plays that occurred outside of the redzone (IE: longer developing plays) were arguably sacks by Tampa Bay in a live game situation. For instance, the deep, 80-yard bomb to [rookie receiver Brian Thomas, Jr.] was truly a sack before the throw as Bucs DL William Gholston bowled over LG Ezra Cleveland at the snap. Gholston was a yard past Lawrence at the time of the throwing motion.

Reporter John Shipley of Jacksonville Jaguars on SI wrote that the Bucs sacked Jags QB Trevor Lawrence six times in 11-on-11 team work and had a coverage sack in 7-on-7. He cited most of the day’s pressure was up the gut from Vita Vea and William Gholston.

However, Sanchez of Black & Teal blog noted only three Bucs sacks of Lawrence.

Joe’s seen consensus from sports radio guys in Jacksonville on the Jags’ interior offensive line getting manhandled often by Vita Vea and Will Gholston. And Joe thought Bucs defensive tackle Greg Gaines had an active day, especially against the run.

Remember, no hitting of quarterbacks yesterday and no tackling of ball carriers allowed.

Joe’s practice notes reflect Joe’s view without the benefit of a DVR or multiple angles. Overall, Joe didn’t see a ton of fire from the Bucs outside of the trenches. And Joe can’t say that was everyone in the trenches.

Love the DB celebration on clear drops. Reminder that delusion is very much a real thing. Catch the ball, M1K3. Go Bucs!

  2. Colonel Angus Says:

Maybe he told Mike that his shoe laces were untied right before the ball arrived.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ME dropping a pass?

    Blasphemy

  4. DRob Says:

That looked like a pbu to me. Corner got his right hand and swatted the ball out of Mike’s at the moment he caught it. Ball left Mike’s hand with too much speed to be a drop.
Slow it down and watch it again. –Joe

  5. Bowles4President Says:

Did Mike have both hands touch the ball? Yes. But let’s dive deeper…

It would have been an over-the-shoulder catch while a defender, viewable from the receiver’s line of sight, is already mid-air flying in for the breakup/tackle.

That’s not a case of the dropsies or Mike playing scared. That’s just a really hard catch that won’t be made by any receiver 100% of the time.

  6. Austin Says:

This better not be some new thing with Mike, never remember him dropping big passes like this before

  7. Fan of the South Says:

Evans bobbled it but may have been able to still get it. Defensive Back made the play as in he didn’t give Evans an opportunity to get a second bite at the apple.

  8. TampaBayBucFan Says:

That was a perfect pass and I do think the DB got his hands on the ball……not a drop. Slow it down. It’s a drop.–Joe

  9. Durango 95 Says:

To me it looks like it went off the fingertips of both hands. Perhaps because the trajectory of the ball was visually obscured by the DB.

last year playoff game, touchdown pass right in the bread basket and Evans dropped it… He does it quite often, Not saying he is bad and not HOF, but he does have a case of the dropsies.

  11. SB Says:

It’s a drop. However I think most people harp on him for his drops when most of them in that one yr were in ONE game.
    “He drops to many balls”

    He’s a frickin HOFer.

“Oh my Ferrari uses too much gas”

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Whatever Mike did to fix his drops between 2015 and 1016, he needs to do it again. Todd and Coen need to see to it.

Maybe those big guardian caps in 100 degree weather don’t help either. They are lightweight and are supposed to reduce concussion 50%, but they have to be hotter on top of the helmet already on their head.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

I can’t slow that down and see in high def so who knows lol

  15. Tucker Says:

Don’t need too thats a drop in any definition slowed down or normal speed.

  16. BucsFan81 Says:

You won’t see that in a real game. Evans turns it on when it counts.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

Up the middle pass rush rules.

    LFG

  18. infomeplease Says:

ME13 caught as many or more TD passes last year than any other NFL player! Not to worry! No one catches them all!

  19. infomeplease Says:

Better put, no NFL player caught more passes then ME23 last season!

  20. infomeplease Says:

Correction, more TD passes last season

  21. lambchop Says:

It’s a clear drop. Pause the video at 11 seconds. It slipped through both mitts before the DB swiped his hand through. Did it rain and was the ball wet? This is a concentration issue otherwise.

  22. Zoocomics Says:

Wow, sort of bang bang, Evans makes the catch there’s still a chance the DB is able to pop out of his hands he was that on him during the play. Why is this a story? This could’ve gone either way.
