Inside 1-On-1 Pass Rush Drills Versus The Dolphins

August 22nd, 2024

Highs and lows for rookie edge rusher Chris Braswell.

So Bucs pass rushers — inside and outside — lined up 1-on-1 against Dolphins offensive linemen yesterday on the practice fields on One Buc Palace.

To set the scene, typically three or four O-linemen get in position in front of a stand-still quarterback lined up in maybe a shotgun position. On defense it’s one lineman taking on one of the offensive linemen.

A coach is on the snap count and once the ball is “snapped,” it’s just the one defensive player battling against one lineman, the others back off.

Here’s the blow-by-blow:

*Calijah Kancey has his helmet ripped off by Miami guard Lester Cotton. Joe’s calling that a penalty as Kancey was winning the rep.

*Vita Vea beats Dolphins center/guard Liam Eichenberg clean.

*Logan Hall has a successful bull rush!

*Anthony Nelson is stopped off the edge.

*Chris Braswell jumps offsides on the left edge. Ugh. Doesn’t win on next do-over try.

*Bubble defensive tackle Mike Greene also jumps offsides. Doesn’t win against rookie OL Andrew Meyer.

*Bubble DT Earnest Brown does not win.

*Off the right edge, undrafted rookie Jay Person gets driven wide.

*Undrafted rookie Daniel Grzesiak gets a little pressure off the left edge against USF rookie tackle Bayron Matos.

*Will Gholston versus right guard Matthew Jones inside left. Gholston gets through hard to tell if it was beyond three seconds. Felt a tick too late.

*Up the gut, undrafted rookie DT Judge Culpepper is handled by Eichenberg. Culpepper is no Vita Vea.

*Kancey pushes the pocket a bit on guard Robert Jones.

*Off the right edge, Markees Watts rips underneath. Nothing. Handled by veteran Kendall Lamm.

*José Ramirez off the left edge on Dolphins starter Austin Jackson. Ramirez jumps offsides and coaches yank him. Anthony Nelson sent in to replace Ramirez. Now Jackson moves early.

*Undrafted rookie Brandon Matterson with a weak effort. C.J. Brewer up the middle without success.

*Undrafted rookie Lwal Uguak fails inside but undrafted rookie Jay Person got a little pressure on a bull rush.

*Braswell with an inside move on tackle Patrick Paul. He got through but it appeared late, which is reinforced by Braswell not getting any congrats from teammates.

*Greene jumps offsides and is yanked in favor of Gholston, who also jumps offsides. C’mon, guys! He gets sat down for Brown and Brown does OK on Matthew Jones, maybe would have been a QB pressure.

*Culpepper handled by Jack Driscoll.

*Off the right edge, Logan Hall gets nothing against Jones. Daniel Grzesiak gets the same result.

*Braswell working against Dolphins practice squad tackle Ryan Hayes gets pressure that moves the simulated quarterback off his spot. He gets some congratulations from coaches and teammates.

*Kancey returns and smokes Jones. Whatever Kancey’s injury was it couldn’t have been too severe.

*Vea very strong against Eichenberg. Joe loves seeing guys struggle against Vea.

*Impressive bull rush by Brown closes the session.

Did I miss the name of the Joe Tryon ?… see I don’t even know his name

  2. KABucs Says:

JTS is still nursing a minor injury.

  3. Bucsfan81 Says:

Sounds like Kancey and Vita are the only ones that can get pass rush. Good thing Bowles likes to blitz 60 percent of the time.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Pretty meh.

  5. Fred McNeil Says:

    I think JTS is injured.

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

If any coordinator gets a DB 10 sacks on the season it’ll be Bowles.

  7. Dave Pear Says:

So in other words, all that edge dropping for well-roundedness might have been better served as more pass rush reps. Nice on, Todd. You da genius!

  8. BucU Says:

Confidence level trending downward since the Jax practices and game.

  9. Scott Says:

I wonder how Chop Robinson looked vs us

  10. Buccup Says:

Culpepper is with the Bucs on a legacy scholarship. Doesn’t sound like it’s going to work out for him. Too bad because his dad was a high-motor guy who was always grinding and productive. He was fun to watch, back in the day.

Hoping Kancey can stay healthy this season. In my opinion, he’s the key to a successful pass rush from the Bucs this year. O-linemen will have to scheme to contain him and that gives everyone else opportunities.

  11. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

We’re not really going to know how strong our pass rush is until September 8th. Bowles is not going to put anything on film showing all their capabilities prior to that.

With all the young players we have I expect some of them to continue to get better throughout the season. Braswell has a high ceiling IMO but he’s a rookie, has a lot to learn, and it could take a full season and off-season to play anywhere close to his potential. It took Yaya half a season to begin starting. After living in the gym during the off-season he’s going to take a big jump forward when he returns.

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Someone mentioned this – Braswell really does resemble JaMiss. That’s as far as it goes, it seems.

Meanwhile, JTS is in his own labs designing male cosmetics and haircare products. What a player!

    Love this stuff Joe

Memories of the Oklahoma drills are dancing in my head right now 🙂

    Go Bucs!

  14. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Time to bring in Reddick, please Jason!! We need a force 0ff the edge for other teams to game plan for. Use your magic, this will also help out the secondary tremendously. Sounds like Eagle fans are fed up? Go Bucs

  15. A Bucs Fan Says:

Upstate NY Buc – that’s not likely to happen unless something unforeseen happens. Members of the Bucs hierarchy (Spytek) have publicly stated as recently as this week they are comfortable with the guys they have OLB and value their mid-round picks more than 33 year old pass rushers. The 33 part was more in reference to Judon but Hasson isn’t far behind turning 30 the 3rd week of the regular season. Take that along with his contract demands. I doubt it happens.

  16. Boss Says:

sound like the bucs got owned to me….short of VV of course

  17. Jeff Says:

He’s a bust. Just like the rest.

WHY SHOULD THE EAGLES CARE….. HE PLAYS FOR THE JETS.

  19. Christopher Schiefen Says:

    Great work, Joe.

  20. Saskbucs Says:

This defense will go as Kancey and Vea go. If they stay healthy, Diaby JTS Braswell are gonna get theirs on the edge. Not worried about the D until I see them get worked over in regular season action. I know the run D is A+…. Can the pass D be a B instead of a C this year?

  21. Jeffrey Becker Says:

sounds like starters will be ok and backups are a crap shoot. how is miami’s OL rated?

  22. Rod Munch Says:

So Ramirez, coming off a 3-sack game (vs scrubs) gets one attempt, jumps offsides and is benched? Jeez.

I’m hoping he had some additional snaps that Joe didn’t get a chance to see and wasn’t literally benched in practice.

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

    Was solid at bama
Will be interesting to see if he can play at th is level well.
    Roll tide

  24. David Says:

I have High Hopes for Braswell, but so far this preseason shows it’s going to take another year

  25. unbelievable Says:

So it’s gonna all be on Vea and Kancey again, because our OLBs suck.

    Fun season ahead fans

  26. Larrd Says:

They really need another good DL.

I wonder how long it will take Ronde to mention how bad the linebackers are, tonight.
