Fire Burns Within Lavonte David

August 9th, 2024

So hardcore veteran NFL players have a lot in common.

Primarily, it’s that they’ve lasted so long in the league because they can maintain a rookie’s fire for the game.

It burns within them and it can’t be hidden. When it fades even the slightest, they’re headed for the couch and August trips to hike in the Adirondacks or fishing in Bimini.

With that in mind, Joe had to smile at iconic Bucs linebacker Lavonte David’s answer to a question posed to him on The Sick Podcast — Pirate Parlay this week.

David, at 34 years old, was asked if there’s anything he’s trying to prove at this point in his career.

“I’m always trying to prove something when I’m out there. You know, I ain’t out there for no reason,” David said. “I’m trying to prove that I still can ball with the best of them. You know, they always say it’s a young guy’s league, but I still feel like I’m a young guy so I know I compete with them. Just having fun out there, man, having love for the game. That will never leave. … My comptitive edge is always there. At the end of each game and the end of each season, I want my name to be at the top. So that’s something I’m always looking to prove when I’m out there.”

Great stuff from David.

Early last week, Joe asked 12-year veterean defensive lineman Will Gholston about his role as a backup and how he approaches it.

Gholston was quick to say that nothing is different for him between the white lines. He’s dialed in mauling the guy in front of him on every snap, and preparing to play full games.

Once, I had a fire burning within me after a trip to Juarez. Amoxicillin cleared it right up.

In all seriousness, I can imagine it’s hard to keep that competitive edge for so many years. What a true champion and leader David is.

  2. Dew Says:

Interesting that the Bengals will play their starters some Saturday night. Including Burrow. Will be a good test for our backup Defense.

Bobby Wagner is now with the Commanders. All Tampa Bay media should share to Fox how LVD is every bit as good as Wagner, even better. I hope LVD balls out against Washington as we all know he can. LVD for HOF!

  4. ReneDejesus Says:

Nothing sweeter for the older dudes me included than still having that Fire and getting Paid !!!!

  5. SlyPirate Says:

Play “Forgot About Dre” and read LVD’s monologue. His sentiment and that jam vibe.

    LVD is HOF

    54 is my favorite player

Great guy and player. I keep forgetting he is 34. Twelve years flew by quick and LVD is still going strong.

LVD has been a champion and blue blood example on and off the field. I’ve been a YUGE fan ever since he was drafted and came here, and man, did he play on some stinkeroo teams! He never left and has a highly deserved SB ring now! He better join DB in Canton cos he belongs there!!
