“Everybody Needs To Play”

August 17th, 2024

Baker Mayfield will lead the starters onto the field Friday.

The stars will come out Friday. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles made it official.

Following tonight’s ugly preseason loss to Jacksonville that featured the Bucs’ backups, Bowles said his starters will play Friday in the preseason finale against Miami at The Licht House.

“Everybody needs to play,” Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network after noting players need to get under the lights and feel the rhythm of the game and get their gameday legs.

How long the starters will play is unclear. Joe figures both sides of the ball will get at least a couple of series.

Hopefully, field conditions will be dry and the Bucs come out of the game healthy. Otherwise, a lot of Bucs fans might start screaming for the Bucs to follow the Sean McVay method of sitting all starter through the preason.

We’ve got plenty of injured players who haven’t played……

  2. Heath Hunt Says:

No reason to play any meaningful players

  3. All_da_way Says:

Well that is good as this is a new offense that needs to be tested. Defensively I want to see how other players look playing with established starters (eg Braswell, Ramirez, Smith, etc).

  4. WiseCrack Says:

Who cares, let the starters sit till its do or die

“everyone need to play, every day, in every way”

  6. dmatt Says:

Trask is not ready for the big dogs n Wofford is not even ready for a puddy cat. Did Ramirez really have 3 sacks all by himself?

  7. dmatt Says:

Let’s go after Cowboys Trey lance, now.

  8. heyjude Says:

We have a young team now. This was only one preseason game. Remember the Jags backup QB is Mac Jones. He had problems with the coaching in NE and they mutually parted ways. He was a first round pick out of Alabama in 2021, fifteenth overall. Mac’s playing was like a first round QB. They don’t really need to worry if Trevor was to get hurt again.

The Bucs did well with our rookies and will learn a lot from this game. Let the veterans play a short time at home this coming Friday. We should know the full roster at the end of the month too. We don’t have our first game until September 8th. That gives the players a lot of time to work together.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

I’m assuming that this was Todd’s plan all along (play starters in Preseason Game 3 only). HOPEFULLY they get at least 2, preferably 3, series against the Dolphins starters.

  10. heyjude Says:

Thinking the same, DR. The game at home against the Dolphins. Good for the fans too. And by that time, they will pretty much know their 53 roster.

  11. Hodad Says:

MaHomes was throwing behind the back passes last night in a meaningless preseason game. It wasn’t his first preseason action either. Just saying, playing starters seems to work for the Chiefs.

  12. Jp09 Says:

It’s amazing the amount of people who believe the starters don’t need reps. No player on the Bucs (or in the entire NFL for that matter) is perfect. So missed reps (in underwear football, padded practice joint practice & “worthless pre-season games”) is a missed opportunity at getting better and working towards perfection. As fans why should we accept anything less?

This is football, injuries happen. Yes it would be unfortunate if Mike, Lavonte, Winfield or any other big name was lost for the year. But, as fans we pay for the team to field the BEST team possible. So tell me how missing valuable reps makes the team better? Other than the fact you’re afraid of an injury on the off chance a major one was to happen….

With that, I think the starters should play the first hal and a series into the second half.

  13. Kenton Smith Says:

Hodad, Mahommes played the first series last week. Team scored 3. Then he sat. One play 10 yard completion to Marquise(Hollywood)Brown. Great OU receiver. Great Baltimore Ravens Receiver. Cheifs biggest offseason acquisition. He’s out indefinitely. Preseason is for guys fighting to make the team. And for 2nd teamers to get ready to step in and Go! on 30 seconds notice. I agree with Defense Rules. 2 or 3 series next week for the starters. Let’s try to be patient (remember patience is hard earned)..the season is a long grind. It’s not how you start but how you finish! Damn I’m ready for some Football!

I think I’ll take the bus, because I’m afraid of getting a nail in my car’s tires.

Just drink ice tea, because the coffee may be too hot.

You best carry that sweater around all night, because the theater might be a bit chilly.

Idk, managing actions for potential problems, instead of fostering the results you seek just feels timid and negative imo.

Trey Lance? All he is is a reminder that Lynch is a terrible GM. SF will never win under him or Shanahan. When I hear people still griping about Licht taking the FSU K in the 2nd round, I think of Trey Lance. Three 1st round picks and the guy couldn’t beat out Mr. Irrelevant.

Could have sworn I saw San Fran in the Super Bowl last year. Yeah they suck – good call.

Friday will be a first glimpse of things to come at RayJ! Should be fun 😎.

  18. Crickett Baker Says:

I am worried that we don’t have a decent backup QB and that’s all I’m going to say.

  19. heyjude Says:

Have we heard anymore about Wolford’s possible rib injury? Guessing that Trask is Baker’s number one backup. Hope Wolford is okay. I think he had an injury last year in preseason too. Poor guy. Preseason can be tough.

  20. Conner50 Says:

I just wanna throw out to all the Baker fanatics that should understand this being that baker has had so many OC’s himself. Trask is working with his 4th offensive coordinator in his fourth year at Tampa. So yea he’s not lighting it up but he’s not playing bad at all, he looks like if he had to come in for baker with the starters that he could manage just fine. He’s still learning Coen’s offense and is playing with guys who will be lucky to make practice squad.

  21. FanoftheSouth Says:

Playing the starters against the Miami defensive starters who are projected to be top 19 so you can see and make adjustments for when you face a defense that projected to be almost last the following week?

Before the first decent TD.drive in game 1 of 2023 with 1:30 before halftime.

4 drives 3 and out. 1- 5 play drive for 14 yards. 1 drive defense gifts offense with a turnover and drive is 4 plays w/ 0 yards and ends with a FG.

Starters played in final preseason game. Mayfield went 6-6 for 43 yards and a TD. White averaged 5.6 yards a carry.

Play g in that game didn’t carry over to Week 1 but why mess with perfection? Team was one play from a Conference Championship Game.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Great news. Toad can unveil his new zone bust coverages that the starters can’t even execute, so Miami will continue completing slant passes and converting 3rd and long as if playing against tackling dummies. Meanwhile, look for the offense to score a touchdown and then turtle.

I wonder who Jason’s next great NFL head coaching hire will be?

  23. Noclu4u Says:

Bucs defense 2nd string looked good against jags 3rd and mostly proverbial 4th stringers. Bucs are a thin team but promising . I suspect and hope they were a bit flat footed last night . They need to step it up next week . I’m very concerned about our backups . I hope we didn’t go to far with our youth movement albeit will pay big dividends later . We are still thin at O-line and QB . Get to work fellow .
    As always Go BUCS 🏴‍☠️

  24. Richierich Says:

Trask is a 3rd string QB at Best.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

No worries, we has Mike Glennon Jr at backup QB, but at least Rudy Carpenter was waaaay better that Wolford’s John. Very disappointed in him. Way to blow a gifrwrapped opportunity, ya stooge.

  26. Go bucs Smokey Says:

“Trask is working with his 4th offensive coordinator in his fourth year at Tampa.”

Is it 4 or 3? Leftwich, Dave C., and our current who am I missing?

  27. Dave Pear Says:

Math isn’t a strength of the Glennonites.

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

Go bucs. That’s only a excuse for Baker Mayfield on this site according to his fan boys ! Lol 😆

  29. Dave Pear Says:

Irish Otard even has AI generated gibberish for a guy who didn’t play in the shiiteshow smeared on fans last night.

  30. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave queer. Kyle Trask lead the offense down and scored and yes that was a trash game as a whole. Again the only quarterback gets a excuse for having a new OC 3 years in a row is Baker Mayfield lol 🤣🤣 he’s the only quarterback in the history of the NFL that had to play with more than one OC . Lol 🤣🤣

  31. Dave Pear Says:

    Otard say “BrrfdfnghghgrrrzdrbebBakerSux$undairberrrberreprouddujjrrrBradysuckedgswmmphthaa&erpJaMissgreatsddxxxrjh.”

    Keep on trading on, girl.

  32. Conner50 Says:

    Go Bucs Smokey
I count Bruce Arians as the fourth and yes I know he was the coach. He also was pretty much the offensive coordinator too cause he ran his style offense not Leftwich’s offense.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Maybe Jason can coax BA out of retirement and force Bloweszo to fix his defensive explosive ‘rrhea pass defense mess. BA can also be told “Neither of your faves were head coaching material. You don’t get another vote”

Then get a real HC for 2025 .

And Otard The Irish will suddenly have a salient post about something besides developing a nearsighted QB.

  34. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave queer. You are the only one who acts like a woman on her period. I told you before I control your emotions lol 🤣🤣 .

  35. Rod Munch Says:

What’s with people stealing my material, but then totally blowing the lines and having zero humor… Come on people, do better.

  36. Robert Says:

Have your starters start in the preseason. I see many teams come out sluggish in the first 3 games of the season. That is the time to bank the wins so when playoff time comes you will be that much more likely to make the playoffs and or win the division. Look at the last 2 years, the Bucs are living proof of squeaking in the playoffs.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

So that’s going to be another excuse he didn’t play in the preseason? Lol 🤣🤣
