Cynthia Frelund Projects Mike Evans’ Touchdown Numbers

August 22nd, 2024

Projections.

These are some weird stats. But hey, if Joe was a math major, Joe would be doing your taxes and not covering the Bucs.

In three of the last four years, future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans has been a touchdown machine. In 2020, 2021 and 2023, Evans had 13, 14 and 13 touchdown catches, respectively.

Last year Evans’ was tied for the lead league.

This year? NFL Network stats queen Cynthia Frelund believes Evans’ numbers will be down, but they will still be up. What? Let Joe explain.

Frelund projects Evans will have nine touchdown catches. However, she also believes those nine will be good enough for Evans to be tied for the third-most touchdown receptions this season.

But I’d also like to highlight one player in the list just below. Mike Evans, he of the 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons, appears to be flying somewhat under the radar. … Considering a number of factors — increased chemistry with Baker Mayfield in their second season together, Chris Godwin moving back to the slot full time, Tampa Bay facing the competitiveness of a first-place schedule — I believe Evans’ red-zone prowess will indeed translate to a healthy number of scores.

Well, Joe will say this about Evans (and Chris Godwin): From Day 1 of training camp four weeks ago, Evans (and Godwin) were head and shoulders above their teammates. Evans and Godwin looked Washington-ready before the first training camp practice was finished.

So with this recharged Bucs offense under Liam Coen, Joe will be surprised if Evans doesn’t have 10 or more touchdown catches.

However, Joe won’t be surprised if Evans is one of the league leaders in touchdown catches.

Evans is the only Bucs player that Frelund thinks will be among the league leaders in most major stats.

Weirdly, Frelund does not foresee any Bucs edge rusher getting 11 sacks.

  1. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Not saying she’s wrong, not saying she’s right. But does anybody have any idea what she predicted for Mike and the Bucs, or anyone for that matter, the last three years? I imagine most people are like me and don’t really care enough about what the talking heads say to make the effort to research this stuff.

But does she have this amazing track record of accuracy that makes her predictive stats anything I should care about more than my drunk buds at our fantasy draft this weekend?

  2. OHBucFan Says:

Hey Drunk, don’t have the 2023 projections in front of me but she did rate Mike as the 26th best WR last year. She also had the Bucs projected for six wins. She’s on the screen for only one reason.

  3. Hodad Says:

    Butterface.

  4. heyjude Says:

Evans has goals and records to break. He will be even better this season.

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Perhaps some of Evans touchdowns will be going to Godwin since CG will be playing in the slot a little more often and therefore will be used more efficiently. That would make some sense. They combined for what, maybe 16 TDs last year? If they combine for 18 that could be 10 and 8 and would be a very nice situation. Evans TDs are less but more TDs overall. That’s a win right there baby.

  6. Fan of the South Says:

Unlike my wife who is always right Freeland is in the Red Lifetime picking games and her other predictions are about 60%

If she is saying what you want to hear she’s awesome and if not she’s a
    bimbo/hack.

In May she had the Falcons 3rd in the NFC with just under 10 wins and the Bucs 10th with just less than 8.

If she’s a hack then betting Tampa and the Over on Wins is money in the bank.

Perhaps her win Predictions will change once she can enter just 53 players into the eguation.

  7. ATLBUC Says:

Evans will not having as many receptions but will definitely have more yards because of the success of the running game.

  8. BucVoyager Says:

I’ve watched her a few times and never had interest in her predictions. It just seems like exact stat predictions are a total waste of time. No one knows what will happen in the season.

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

Her predictions are always within about half a game of Vegas with one or two outliers sprinkled in to try to keep things interesting.

  10. zzbucs Says:

    Jesus Joe…

    This is a serious site….

Is that relevant what this lady has to say about the projected ME13 tochdowns are?

  11. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Yes she’s pretty hot, she does pretty good with most of her predictions but like last year’s not so great job on Evans, I think more for him because how many decoys do we have now. That recivier room is looking good. The online will be better than the two previous years so not only will that help him it gives a defense a lot more to have to think about. Predictions are just like opinions, just a guessing thing. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

  12. KABucs Says:

I’d criticize her more strongly for her predictions but then is she really that different than a lot of the other National media types? Underrating Mike last year, it looks like she learned her lesson a little bit there. A lot of predictions in general were way off on the Bucs and Evans last season.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

She gets a few things right out of sheer luck. She’s just eye candy. Nobody actually listens to her.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

Her models are dominated by historical statistics with stronger dependence on recent history. There are minor tweaks for roster changes but, generally, her models are great at telling you about last year.

  15. D-Rok Says:

For those who have actually watched her do a segment, her personality is VERY geeky/nerd-like (in my opinion) which is such a dichotomy to me, given her looks.

At least last year, she had a fantasy show every week with fellow stat-geeks…let’s just say I turned down the volume. 😉

  16. BA’s Red Pen Says:

What kind of numbers does she project for Hassan Reddick? Oh wait, never mind.

  17. Joe Says:

Is that relevant what this lady has to say about the projected ME13 tochdowns are?

Joe thinks so. Joe’s been linking to Frelund for years.

  18. Dave Pear Says:

D-Rok – she’s done a lot to make herself up to look good for the cameras. I’m fairly sure if you saw her in a regular setting without the foofoo, she’d be a butterface.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

I think the offense will have more TDs overall but I see more diversity of players scoring. More rushing TDs for sure and Godwin catching more TDs. ME13 will play well but may not get 13 this year unless the offense takes off big.

  20. Let em Bake Says:

A beautiful, fit, lady who loves football. What’s not to like?

  21. Joe Says:

Her models are dominated by historical statistics with stronger dependence on recent history. There are minor tweaks for roster changes but, generally, her models are great at telling you about last year.

Well, if she was going by “models” of next year, wouldn’t that make her a fortune teller?

Maybe Joe is way off base, but Joe has no idea how one can “project” with any degree of credibility if your projections are not rooted in past history. Otherwise, that’s just dart-throwing and hope.

  22. EssexBuccaneer Says:

If she’s just there for eye-candy, then we’d see some kind of historical evidence of other (male) analysts hitting far higher percentages, right?

    I’ll wait.

  23. SlyPirate Says:

It would be cool to see him get 16. 16 puts him within range of top 5 TDs all time. His best year was 14, so it’s a little bit of a stretch.

  24. Jeffrey Becker Says:

it’s possible our running game is a clock burner, shortening games. that combined with our propensity to allow looooong drives by giving opponents easy six yard throws has me thinking we might be better offensively but throw wide less. still, he’s gonna get a ton of looks inside the opposing ten. 10 TDs, but he might be thanking his lucky stars there’s an extra game. very helpful haha. good luck mike, praying you avoid injuries. would suck to lose streak because you only played ten games or whatever
