Cody Mauch Is Still Feeling Out His Weight

August 3rd, 2024

Cody Mauch has a new update.

Cody Mauch’s new body is something he’s figuring out.

So it’s widely known that right guard Mauch added about 15 pounds of good weight this offseason to be a more beastly player than he was last season at around 305 pounds.

Mauch explained recently that he didn’t have a good gauge of how he can play at his new weight until the pads came on this summer. Well, the pads have been on for four practices and Joe asked Mauch today about how he feels it’s going.

“It’s been good, still getting used to it a little bit trying find like the right body position to sit in in some of these power rushes,” Mauch said. “It’s a work in progress but it’s definitely been an upward trajectory, I’d say.”

Joe’s been around long enough to know linemen often tinker with their weight — sometimes under orders from team officials — to try and maximize their effectiveness. The experimentation isn’t always successful.

Hopefully, Mauch finds a groove at his new weight and it becomes a perfect fit for him.

If not, the the Bucs might have to wait another year to learn how good Mauch can be.

    Good stuff Joe!

Been wondering about Mauch and his new added weight. Some times it makes them slow and it doesn’t work like they think it will. I do remember Cappa looking somewhat like Mauch did last year when he was in his second year looking like he was getting pushed around a lot.

It took him a bit to find his technique I think. His pads were too high on pass pro. Hope Mauch can get his down a bit faster than Cappa did.

    Go Bucs!

A given amount of muscle weighs a lot more than fat, hopefully it’s the former

    15lbs is 15lbs

Right now Klein is his back up. Klien who’s had 56 college games at RG is a big man. The team should not wait on Mauch. He either gets better, or gets replaced.

Yea, but 15 pounds, especially in the legs is much different than 15 lbs on the belly.

  6. Gipper Says:

Hopefully the weight is in upper body where he can’t get pushed around as much. Saw the transformation of Wyatt Teller RG Browns. He added nothing but muscle in upper body and quickly became an All Pro.

    Same matador, different size cape.

A given amount of muscle “weighs” a lot more than fat, hopefully it’s the former.

A pound of muscle mass and a pound of fat mass weigh the same.

And ultimately, Newton’s 2nd law of physics clearly states it is harder for a defensive lineman to move 320 lbs than 305 lbs.

Hey Geno – old Sir Isaac knows more about football than a lot of the contemporary football “jouralists.”

Maybe the confusion is in, a pound of muscle mass is more dense and therefore takes up less space than a pound of fat.

    @Pear

No doubt that excess body fat can impact agility, although that’s not a definitive factor. See Warren Sapp.

It’s funny that I see comments stating that if the weight is in his legs that is good and then another comment that if the weight is in his upper body, then that is good.

Newton’s 4th Law never published before today.

    Law of Journalistic Hot Air:

The amount of empty space a journalist can fill with meaningless words is directly proportional to the size of their paycheck and inversely proportional to the actual information provided.

i.e. Stephen Smith v. Joe Bucs Fan.

Licht takes these college tackles because they can put weight on their frames – would be a bit concerning if that’s an issue here. Hopefully it’s a non-issue as they’ve only had a handful of practices with pads on so far.

    Note I didn’t say “a POUND”, I said “a given amount”
(that is to say, same size, volume, whatever)

Not seein a whole lot of muscle weight in them chubby cheeks. Lookin like he ate more cookies n cream than protein shakes and weight lifting

    Mauch was a LT.

    He should play LG!

And put Brederson or Klein at RG.

    And cut Hainsey.
