Clear Bucs Goal Against Miami

August 21st, 2024

In the spirit of nurturing hope and good preseason vibes, Joe has not mentioned until now that Kyle Trask and the Bucs offense were ugly on opening drives through two preseason games.

The numbers are scary.

Trask was 1-for-4 passing for 0 yards combined in those opening drives. Overall, the Tampa Bay offense amassed just 20 yards on 8 plays.

As serious Bucs fans know, Tampa Bay did not score a touchdown on an opening drive last season. That’s a problem in league in which needing to start fast is not a cliché.

Over the past 10 years, NFL teams that score first (touchdown or field goal) win 64 percent of those games.

So yesterday, Joe nearly stood up and applauded when right takckle Luke Goedeke spoke to local media and noted the Bucs offense has a clear focus on putting the ball in the end zone on its opening drive Friday against the Dolphins, the preseason-finale game and dress rehearsal for opening day.

He was asked what the offense wants to see from itself to know it’s ready for the regular season.

“See the run game get going really good, the pass game as well. We’d love to see a touchdown on our first offensive possession for sure,” Goedeke said. “I think that’s a fair goal for us, I mean just with the caliber of players we have and the offense that we have and everything, I feel like that’s really fair.”

Joe finds it fair, too.

Bank a TD on the opening drive. Build confidence that it’s, you know, possible.

In one drive in Preseason game 3 against PIT Mayfield was 6-6 for 43 yards and 1 TD. Everyone was Ooh and Ahh

Game 1 vs MIN first six drives resulted in 20 plays for 23 yards. Scoring was on Field Goal from a turnover where the offense netted zero yards on three plays.
0-1 passing and a sack were Mayfield’s contribution.

Preseason Bucs ranked 13th in total offense and are up 8 spots from the bottom in rushing. Trask was just under 62% Completion and his passer rating although not great was far from the worse. Not bad play from the reserves.

This game will mean nothing except maybe a way to claim that the Bucs Offense is a Dynamo if they do well in the drive they have or that Mayfield is Leaps and Bounds better than Trask.

Couple three and outs for the Starters vs Miamiwill cause concerns but will all be forgotten if they crush a weak Commanders team week 1 and the Dynamo talk will start again.

Regardless of what happens against Miami the bar should be set pretty low anyway.

    Ouch Joe! Just ouch!

    Go Bucs!

  3. BucU Says:

So what’s your point? Preseason games don’t mean much?
    That’s quite a revelation.

  4. Baking with Evans Says:

Two touchdown drives in the first quarter would be just a Coen-cidence.
    LFG!!!!!

I haven’t like much of our passing plays so far. Against the jags their WR were running wide open and Mac Jones had easy completions. Our guys were facing very small windows for completions. Are we submarining ourselves in the preseason in order not to show anything to the WFT?

Just because is playing a backup role don’t forget that Mac Jones is a first round draft pick with tons of NFL experience. He probably had more NFL games under his belt than the dbs he was throwing against combined. Be patient and let’s see how our starters do Friday.
Joe on the first drive McMillan should have got his feet down on that sideline pass and on the third down play he should have shut it down when he got in space in the zone.

Run the dadgum ball , show you are a smash mouth powerhouse.

  8. JD Still Says:

If you look at the statistics , I believe those were pre scripted plays , where Kyle was tasked to throw to each reciever , the numbers back that up , where , in both the preseason games so far , almost every reciever was thrown to , but most only one time to make sure everybody got a shot , that makes sense, they were games but they were practices also and you want to see how everybody performs in game type situations, so that when the real games are being played you know who you can count on.

  9. Bee Says:

    Serious questions:

How can you judge how good or bad a QB is when they haven’t played a game with the starters? What QB do you know improves their game mostly working with 2nd and 3rd team?

  10. BatW Says:

    Trade Trask to Minnesota

  11. Robbie Says:

Ridiculous, Kyle has never played with the starters.

  12. Booger Says:

Start FAST. Tempo. Keep it movin.’ Impose YOUR will. Stop allowing the DEFENSE to dictate what YOU do. Keep THEM on their heels and off-balanced. Don’t run the ball up the middle on 2nd & 1 or 2, after allowing them to substitute and get completely set-up (before snapping it with 2-seconds left on the play-clock)… Just get on up there, & run the next Damm PLAY!!!! Let’s GOOOOO.

  13. White Tiger Says:

Kyle Trask isn’t showing us much with the talent he has around him. There’s a reason Kyle isn’t on the field with the starters, multiple evaluations show that Mayfield is clearly the better QB, in the eyes of the ones that want to win the most games.

Kyle is in his 4th OC, 2nd or 3rd new offense, he has no game experience to speak of. I like the kid, I want him to develop, but he’s just no where near Baker Mayfield’s experience, ability, or understanding of the offense.

I want us to win much more than we lose.

Let’s get this thing started already!

  14. Dave Pear Says:

White Tiger with the truth. Some can’t handle the truth.

In addition to a TD on their opening possession, please force a punt on the Phish’s first possession. Please don’t let them slant and deep middle their way to another TD on third and threezillion.

Then, no reason to give a spit. Don’t get anyone making the team injured, and enjoy the cocktail waitresses matching physicality with the burlesque dancers.

  15. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I just hope that we can make it to the first game without another injury.

  16. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Who the starting QB is not at question. The die has been cast.

Honestly after the miserable season Mayfield had in Carolina and LA for him to do as well as he did was shocking quite frankly.

Who is the real Baker Mayfield? We’ll find out this season.

If Bucs miss the playoffs then Bowles will be gone and all bets are off.

As it relates to Kyle Trask? He probably won’t be in Tampa in 2025. Why would he stay? Bucs went 1-6 during a stretch and he didn’t see a snap.

It worked out because Mayfield broke out during the next 3 games then regressed again vs Carolina going 20-32 and 137 check down charlie yards.

Bucs should have lost that game if Carolina’s offense wasn’t historically bad last season.

Mayfield built his stats on 6 decent games last year going 5-1 in this games. The other 11 games were very pedestrian Bucs went 4-7. In those games Baker did not turn the ball over giving the defense an opportunity to hold. Th

Assuming the production stays the same and we see a 6 good games and 11 mid to bad game production from Mayfield will that get us to 9-8 on this year’s schedule?

$100M for 6 good games and 11 mediocre to bad games.

Every team is optimistic this time of year.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

Score on the first drive…now that’s a noble goal. I’ll be watching for it.

  18. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m pretty sure Coen will design a much better week-to-week game plan than Canales did. That guy was far too predictable.

Mostly, Why didn’t he get any snaps ….that’s what JL, his staff, and the coaches thought of his abilities at that point!!!!! At best right now, he’s a backup. He may not even get a second contract offer from the Bucs because they will probably look to the future beyond BM6. And from what the coaches see, he’s not it. That’s reality!

  20. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Infomeplease it was said last year Mayfield wasn’t coming off the field until the Bucs were mathematically eliminated.

It has nothing to do with Trask’s ability. Bowles wanted Mayfield and rigidly stayed committed to him.

Having said that, if it weren’t for Carolina and Atl gifting Tampa wins in weeks 12 and 13, Trask would have been playing against the Pack, Mayfield wouldn’t have gotten his contract, Bowles would have been fired and Trask would have been the starting QB today.

  21. Booger Says:

It would’ve depended on how well Trask had played in those last five games under that scenario. More than likely, if that had happened that way, & Bowles was fired… Then, chances are we would’ve drafted (or signed) a brand new QB (and/or moved other pieces towards a complete rebuild), heading into this season. The ONLY chance Trask would have to be our opening day starter for this season, would’ve been IF he had gotten in there and really ‘lit-it’ TF UP… And the reality is, that would’ve been HIGHLY, unlikely.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Well in week 1 you had the Bucs 2nd team going against the Bengals 1st team. Then last week they puttered out at the end of the drive.

In any case they’re not game planning or preparing for these defenses – and when you’re just playing a bunch of scrubs, in particular vs starters, it’s really very meaningless. Which is why it’s important to actually see the real players and not just having them stand around in shorts, at games and in practices.

  23. Dave Pear Says:

Mostly Stupid Glennon Fan — Whine to us all you want, as you do. Here’s the 372nd clue for you — People on JBF don’t decide these things. We just watched as Baker won over his teammates, coaches, management, overcame Bowels’ uninspiring coaching to win the division, make the playoffs and advance.

Meanwhile the dude you’re convinced is the next Dan Marino has been evaluated as a 2nd or 3rd stringer. Why? Because of his performance in practice and preseason for the 4th consecutive year. Those who decide get paid millions to win, or else they get fired. He’s exactly where his play has determined he be.

Your poster with #2 hanging on the ceiling above your bed will have to suffice.

  24. Don'tBmad Says:

Trask is trash….ever since he got exposed in the bowl game(3 first half picks) he has never even came close to impressing. He even had a head start on Mayfield in Canales offense and got beat out time to dump him and get something in return like a kick/punt returner or anything like another o linemen

  25. Don'tBmad Says:

Trask had a head start in DC’s offense and still got beat out. He’s a bum

  26. Wild Bill Says:

Sheesh, , two games with the 3rd and 4th teams guys who willl mostly be cut or on reserve group just is what it is. Mediocre for some and lousy for the rest most of whom will be cut. Starters will play some or most of the next 1st quarter and m then sit . Dam good idea! Start the real season with healthy starters! Coaches already know the first team guys. And now they know what else they got. Bring on the real season asap!!!!

  27. Dave Pear Says:

Glennon has also been facing bartenders and waitresses and fails to elevate his side. Hence — clipboard holder. He’s slow to develop but improving his grip on it.
